In other news, this weekend I'm most looking forward to seeing more of Canton on Doctor Who, which explains why I had a dream in which I asked Mark Sheppard if he was in more than two episodes in Doctor Who. (He said "yes" and I said "Yes!".) Then we saw leopards and cheetahs in the bushes at night before the local Big Man with his machetes came to force the village to play a manual-dexterity game, in which the losers lost a finger - ETA: And by "lost" I mean "had chopped off with a machete" - and then I took over the gang and set things right. I went running today instead of to the movies with mom today, because she's been having tachycardia since last this morning, and that not even two weeks since the last time she had it. So, not good.

Not much other news, apart from ye gods am I getting tired of writing up Links of the Day - mainly because I don't have time to even check the links out myself for more than a skim. Yeah, y'all think I read all the fics I list? No, alas, there's not enough time for that. In terms of fic, the LotD is more my wish list than my done list. (And trust me, those lists are real. Not just that, but I've got a document saved, called "Fics to Read". So I mean it when I say I want to read these things.) It makes me sad that I can't read all the fics I list. But then, there's a reason it's the links of the day and not the recommendations of the day. It's just a daily bookmark.

It's just that with pingback I've been getting the occasional "wee! thanks for reccing me!" which, well, okay, it's sort of what I've done, you're welcome, I'm just spreading the word, but then sometimes it's with the added "I hope you liked it" or similar and then I get all guilty if I haven't read the fic. So yeah.

Basically, the LotD is me closing tabs of things I would really like to have the time to delve into deeper, or tabs of things I thought were cool, or interesting, or that other people might be interested in, or whatever. The small text is a sure sign, though.

And now you know. And hopefully I can stop feeling guilty about it.

Meme: 30-Day Fandom vs. Personal Meme:

Day 29: One of your favourite pastimes, and which character do you think would enjoy it the most?

Currently it's editing a video, so I guess Misfits's Simon would like it, seeing as he does it himself.

Day 30: You get to either have the powers of any character from a fandom, have their looks, or have them be a real person and become your lover. Which/who do you choose?

Oh, like picking which option of these should be a contest? Would you rather do awesome stuff, be pretty, or have a good lay? Hmmm... *le sarcasm*

So, powers. Obviously. And, just as obviously, True Blood's Sam's shapeshifting abilities. Because it's only been my wish to have that power since like, the womb.

The cold I've been sneezing and sniffling all past week decided that today was the day it was going to make me dizzy, woozy and headachey. I slipped into a nap in the afternoon as I lay horizontal in the hopes that the ground would solidify beneath me, and I'm still feeling out of sorts (and dizzy, let's not forget dizzy).

Jolted out of an unexpected nap and still reeling from The Cold is not the best way in which to answer a phonecall about setting up an appointment with Organization to discuss my CV. I managed to do so somehow, although I barely remember who I spoke to or what they say - at machine-gun speed, too. Nevertheless, Wednesday morning will be interesting.

This weekend was the Jus in Bello Convention weekend. It's in Rome. Y'all remember how I felt about this last year, right? *sigh* So close, so far, so stupid. I was doing rather poorly yesterday with what might have been a stomach bug. The kind that scuttles around wreaking havoc whilst white blood cells stand on chairs and scream, tossing rolled-up newspapers onto the floor in a hopeless attempt at stopping the infestation.

Today we took to the car and supposedly went to a Medieval town with a lovely view of the lake, but all we got to see was rain coming at us in all directions, so we had a coffee (with flavoured sugar!) and went back home.

I appear to have developed a crush on Misfits's Simon, which means a certain unfilicious episode will probably be rewatched. I also watched the Rifftrax version of X-Men yesterday, and somehow that made the movie ten times more boring. I liked that film, damnit. And all the while yesterday I was watching it thinking, "This is so ridiculous and nothing's happening." I don't even.

And now, Attack of the Links. Muahahaha!

Today was sprinkled with suck, apparently. Consider that it started with my not getting out of the elevator at warp speed, so that it flew right back up to the very top floor when a neighbour rang it. "But I saw the button go dark," he said, referring to the "I'm free! Call me!" button. Yeah, but dude, you have to give me time to get out once the elevator lands.

Then there was work. Work was frustrating because I'm editing the format of a bunch of articles for a collection, and by gods are the articles in some serious need of formatting. Some only give half their references, others throw in copy/pasted lists, and still others decide that one-line paragraphs are teh awesome. Why can't people do things right the first time, or at least be consistent in their own article?

But that wasn't it, either. The office is cold. Like, very cold. Like, I wear wool sweaters and fingerless gloves and sit next to the portable radiator while the heater is rumbling on in the background. That's cold. But my co-worker - the substitute secretary who's from round-about my generation - insists on forgetting to close the door behind her whenever she leaves the room. Rant is ranty )

Also, my mother's back, as I might have mentioned, and we're back to me sucking and me not being able to breathe without being a rude daughter and obviously not even trying to get out of a house I'm just leeching off of which I am trying to keep my head together and not die a little support would be nice. Oh look, another rant. )

I think you can see why I'm not really up to posting or writing or anything at all these days. Like, I have a queue list on YouTube from October, and a fanfic I haven't touched in almost four months, and fanmixes that have been live for two months and still haven't been pimped, and it took me like two weeks to revise my CV and rant continues )

Today at the internship I returned to the translations, which is sort of a relief on account of the lack of interminable scanning, and on the other hand, it's me, back where I started. I need this oompf to get me a little bit further now.

There was another metro&bus strike this morning, which meant I got to go to the office's neighbourhood a full hour before work actually started and, plus, I got to freeze my bum off sitting and walking around the sad, empty little streets.

Mom's off to Spain starting this morning, so it's just my Dad and me until Wednesday. I trust we won't starve, although to hear my mother speak and see her stock the freezer, you'd think we didn't know how to feed ourselves. Mind you, I think I'm having McD's tomorrow.

Tomorrow, speaking of, I'm going to head over to the far reaches of the city and try and get my fiscal number. It will undoubtably involve a lot of waiting and hopefully not too much paperwork. Beurocracy for the not at all win.

I've spent the afternoon revelling in having the house to myself and working on almost a week's worth of Links of the Day (oh, compulsive organization!) On Sunday Dad and I are going to see a Swan lake ballet showing - we managed to nab free tickets from our landlady for some reason. I think I might force myself to go jogging sometimes in the weekend too, and I have to write a comment in a Goethe forum for my German homework (how wack is that?).

In other news, I'm dying to finish The Pillars of the Earth and hey, new Supernatural this week again! \o/ I'm really looking forward to seeing more of Puppy!Sam. Ah, it's almost like seeing Season 1 Sam all over again! (Except he doesn't have the adorable bangs of adorableness.)

Today is - or rather was, by the time I get this posted - my brother's birthday. Even though he's way over in far off lands currently struggling with the snowpocalypse, we celebrated the traditional way - food (chocolate mousse whatwhat!) and booze. Well, we called him, too. He's 33 now, which makes me feel so, so old. In less than 3 years, I'm going to be 30. I can't even begin to imagine what I want my life to be like by then. I can't even get myself out of this rut, it seems. They say all states are temporary, but damn it if they don't feel permanent when you're living them. But damn it, I CAN HAS HOPE. AND OOMPF. MORE THINGS WILL GET DONE!

  • All the while I was reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower I not only felt like crying, but also had the strange desire to write out the book as letters and actually send them to someone on the dates the letters were dated.

  • The English language - and infact, every language - really out to have a two forms of "we": one that's inclusive and one that's exclusive, so that you can have the situation where a group of people are together and one says to another, "We're going to a party," and the person knows whether they are included or not. I mean, there should be a "we but not you" and a "we including you" form.

So there I am, scanning through Time We Saw a Miracle, looking for quotes to slip into the fanmix because I'm obsessive yes I know when I see a formatting error. A formatting error. After fighting with the damn thing for ages and churning out dozens of PDFs and reuploading the manuscript to CreateSpace and checking and rechecking and there's a bloody formatting error. It's just a few spaces missing, two empty lines that should separate a passage in italics from a passage in normal text, so it's not like Godzilla took a hatchet to it, but still, there's a formatting error being all ugly in my proof book.

One day, when I have money and patience (ha!) I will reupload these little bastards and damn the cost and get new proofs and all will be well with the world.

I was going to write more - talk about the day or post photos or show signs of life in general - but frankly writing this much is more than I can at the moment. Or today.

I suppose even if I say I've been meaning to post for the past week it doesn't detract from the fact that I haven't posted this whole year so far. It's not for want of things to say, either, just that time seems to have taken amphetamines and is working double-fast. So I'm going to try to catch up in the time-honoured fashion of bullet points.

Why Rome Is a Bad Place:
  • On the mid-morning of December 31st, my mom was making her way back from the market with a few bags of vegetables walking down a main street near our house. Then Bad Things Happened )

  • I can has job! Okay, so it's part-time and for a limited time at that (January to May) and at the Institute where I did my internship, but still. Job. Read more... )

  • Any day now, the proof copy of Time We Saw a Miracle is going to make its way through the US mail system and there will be joy and rejoicing. Well, maybe not, because it's going to my brother's address (so much safer than asking an American company to send something super special across the pond to Italy). Still, book.

  • I've been working on the four (oh gods, four) fanmixes for Time We Saw a Miracle. I've got three with their songs pretty much narrowed down and in a decent enough order, which still amazes me because I had so many songs to wade through.

  • I read The Red Tree by [livejournal.com profile] greygirlbeast (Caitlin R. Kiernan) this past week although "read" isn't the word so much as "avidly devoured".

I was a tiny bit disappointed for all of two seconds when I discovered that the novel wasn't written in the wonderful run-on sentences of Threshold (because gods do I love that writing) but as I said, that lasted two seconds and then I was hooked and loving it.

Oh, and I totally called The Thing About Constance, but that's okay because while I suspected it, I never really believed that's where it was going, so was still pleasantly surprised and still thoroughly enjoyed the slight paranoia I was sharing with Sara.

I was not expecting the sex scenes or maybe it was just two details that stuck in my head and won't go away, involving sex toys, but either way, it fit.

I was struck by a few details like the insomnia and the seizures where I could point to and say, hey, [livejournal.com profile] greygirlbeast's Real Life is poking though, and that was actually nice because I could draw upon all her descriptions of what she's gone through and understand it all the more. I also liked that a few details and scenes I could pick out from Threshold's universe-vault, or maybe it's just [livejournal.com profile] greygirlbeast's general universe details and I just haven't read enough of her work to know.

    Still, there were spoilers )

Sickle Hits the Fandom:
  • Grey's Anatomy is back, baby! There were happy couples and rapid-fire drama and sweet jambalaya Christina Yang I missed you. The characters made me happy, except Meredith who for the first time ever completely alienated me from her drama and made me say, "Good gods, woman, you're being petty and over-dramatic." But then Cally was all amazing, so it's all good.

  • Castle was watched in the company of my mom, which meant a lot of pausing and recapping and explaining, but it's really nice to be able to watch a show with someone and squee.

  • Supernatural is still absent from my life (especially considering I barely even have time to read fic or meta) but my wallpaper's a screencap of the Dean's promo bit, and when mom asked who it was, out came Google Images and parental approval. Seriously, that boy is too pretty.

  • Human Target was Human Target again! \o/ Rejoice! Read more... ) So yeah, Human Target was its usual crazy fun self with the blatant disregard for reality we all know and love and I clapped like a happy, happy seal.

So I'm an indecisive jittery mess. Here's the latest version of Time We Saw a Miracle's blurb:
In an armed camp, Chip and his companions find shelter from the infected and cope with life after the apocalypse. As Icarus struggles with the loss of his angelic grace, Chip discovers there is always something more to fear.

And it is tracking them down.

Your reactions?
a) Kill it with fire!
b) Shiny!
c) What is that last line doing there and how can we make it go away?

My reaction: B followed immediately by C then swinging wildly back to B. Why? My love for The Line will not die, and the blurb is now just three words longer than Time For Something Biblical's and in the same paragraph format. Symmetry is my crack.

I need to learn more Chinese. It's a very satisfying language to be angry in. Have you ever seen the tone marks on romanized Mandarin? You could hurt yourself on diacriticals like that. Ranting in Chinese is like riding rough over a rocky mountain sentence, with bad shocks and nothing but a pile of exclamation points to stop you at the end. Whoever you're yelling at just has to hang on for dear life and hope to get through it without hitting anything flammable.

I hope they forgive us once we've saved them all.

Chances are I'll finish Nanowrimo this weekend \o/ And I know what scene I'm going to finish it with! (Even though I don't quite know how I'm going to end it.) Basically, there's just some Comfort to balance out all the Hurt and a little dream sequence of a Happy Ending, because they sure as hell ain't getting it in real life. Fictional life. Whatev'.

In other news, there's been no Castle, Grey's Anatomy or, I'm assuming, Supernatural to squee over this week. Damned Thanksgiving Week hiatus!

Also, I was listening to the audio of Misha's panel at the Asylum Convention, and for the first ten minutes I had to fight my brain. It kept telling me I was listening to Patrick Dempsey (i.e McDreamy) instead of Misha (i.e. McSnarky or just plain McAwesome). This was very distracting and strange and it doesn't help that I still think they do sound alike.

This has left me with the strange desire to rewatch Blonde, "the perv edition" (i.e. the heavily edited-down version with only the This Is relevant to My Interests clips left in), with Patrick Dempsey and Jensen Ackles as Marylin Monroe's simultaneous (douchebag) lovers. You can see why fans would want the perv edition ;)

Look at your comment, now back to mine. Now back at your comment. Now back to mine. Sadly it isn't mine, but if you stopped trolling and started posting legitimate comments it could look like mine. Look down, back up. Where are you? You're scrolling through comments, writing the comment your comment could look like. What did you post? Back at mine. It's a reply saying something you want to hear. Look again the reply is now diamonds. Anything is possible when you think before you post. I'm on a horse.

Nanowrimo: Writing so much easier now! Wrapping up things! Sort of. I mean, there's still Icarus to worry about, but that's mainly behind the scenes and a lot of "and they looked for him and didn't find him until aha!" Wow, it certainly feels like we're drawing on the final leg. \o/
