I had every intention of making a post today - well, a proper one, this one doesn't count - but since today's been crap, that plan's been scrapped. Besides, I haven't done much today: went to work, was cold, put subtitles on a documentary all day, Tumblred, was bored, was even more cold, had lunch with people (even through I was a social-anxiety-cat all the way and besides, no one talked to me, not really), was attacked by dodos (i.e. massive wibbles for no reason), was cold, went home, went to the park to knit (for some strange reason), went home again, was even more cold, obsessively organized my hundreds of GIFs into fandom folders (because' I'm that kind of crazy), wrote this crap.

And now, The Walking Dead! And hopefully my fingers and toes will stop aching in my barely-nineteen-degrees room with a goddamn breeze. I am so cold.

Sickle's Random Tid-Bits:
  • I finally watched an episode of Battlestar Galactica, which I've been meaning to watch in full for ages. Obviously it was a Mark Sheppard episode - 3x18, "The Son Also Rises" - and he was basically the reason I watched it. And, it turns out, the only reason I liked it.

Sure, I was jumping smack in the middle of the third season with only a basic knowledge of the whole series' storyline, but I didn't enjoy it because I got lost. And it wasn't because I didn't feel for the characters, because I did, for some, even without knowing their life history. I don't know, I think it was just all the politics and intrigue and all that type of happenings that made me not like it, because I've figured out that that is just not my genre. Thrillers and spies and politics - even if they are in space! - just isn't my thing.

But that said, it really is a good show. Good pacing, good look, excellent writing. And by that I mean I absolutely adored all of Romo Lampkin [Mark Sheppard]'s speeches. His character had a slight Irish lilt to it, which was charming once I actually figured out what accent it was I was hearing - because previous to that I was just all ears going, "What? What accent is that? Where is that from? Is that, what?"

I actually had to extract some of his speeches and made them into MP3s (wanna listen?) because I just loved them so much. Mark, damnit, do audiobooks.

So in sum, I'll be watching more BSG, but only the kind with Mark Sheppard in it, until and if I get hooked on it and want to watch the whole thing.

Oh, and on a completely different not, the president? Couldn't keep her apart from Doctor Who's Sarah Jane Smith in my head. I'm okay with that.

  • The newspaper did an article on prostitution zones in Rome, and so I learned that there are two zones in my neighbourhood. There's seven women right around our place - which doesn't surprise me, as I knew of five and actually walk by their hang-out place which is a little park every day to and from work - and some twenty-one a bit farther away - coincidently, where one night my mother and I were walking and were called at from a car and we knew they'd mistaken us for prostitutes. So that makes almost thirty prostitutes right in my area. Huh.

  • One of my co-workers, who's camping out at a friend's place until he can find one of his own, got robbed. In his apartment. At night. While he was sleeping. Someone ninjaed in through an open second-story window and took his friend's TV, his iPhone and wallet. Apart from being freaked the fuck out over someone being in his house while he's sleeping, he didn't have a dime on him. He went to his folk's for the weekend, to recover a bit until he could move in to his new place. The worst thing? This is totally not an unheard of or even uncommon thing in Rome.

  • I just realized today that it's going to be ten years since I graduated from highschool and started university, and I've got a friend who's at that stage right now. (The best thing? We're both like, "What age difference?") Ah, squishy ♥ And since it's that season, there's a few Tumblr things about starting university which mean a lot because I can remeber it all happening, and because I'm seeing it happening to my squishy. So this.

Today was a crap day. Nothing was done, not a shit was given, and woe was had. My head still hurts from sorta-not crying on my have-to-get-out walk.

And my mom needs to learn that saying on Monday that there's "a Quebecois film she wants to watch" and on Wednesday that "it's on Satursday at nine" and on Saturday that "she's going to watch a movie" does not mean that she's making plans with me to watch a movie today at 9 pm. You actually have to say the words that mean, "let's go watch [movie] [date] at [time]." You can't have plans with people if you don't make them.

In other news, this is why I still haven't watched Paranormal Activity 2, as told by ambrina on Tumblr. I really want to watch it, and it's right there, watchable, but just the thought makes me burrow into my blankets. It's the poltergeist thing, especially with the bed sheets. That's the kind of thing that freaks me out. (See also: the possession scene in The Exorcism of Emily Rose.)

I have no idea - or have forgotten - what my friends are like when they're mad. And anyway, no one person is angry in one single way. It depends on the circumstances. There's frustrated-mad, hurt-mad, jealous-mad, confused-mad, I-love-you-but-mad, and so on. Read more... )

Sickle's Review of Repo! The Genetic Opera:
  • It is awesome. (Trailer) I remember the crazy mad hype on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets months before the movie came out, and believe be, the hype is totally founded. (Unless cracky science fiction dramatic slasher opera isn't really your thing - like my brother - then you might not like it.) It's rocking fun, the story is good (and easy to follow in that characters are well-introduced and get back-stories) and the songs are brilliant

  • Speaking of, Zydrate Anatomy is still the best song there, although I Didn't Know I'd Love You So Much is rapidly becoming my also-favorite.

  • And speaking of Zydrate Anatomy, can I just say? Graverobber is made of unf.

  • Anthony Stewart Head was spectacular. His singing - and yes, he does have an album out - his acting, everything. Oh man, I've missed seeing him. (This is why I need to watch Merlin, I know.) I didn't even have to choose between hopeing for him being Giles-like or him being Ripper-like. (And, um, Sexy Evil Voice is Sexy.)

  • And again, speaking of Anthony Head, I didn't know his brother was Murray Head, of One Night in Bangkok. That is... Wow. That's a classic, that is.

Sickle Wields the Science Stick: On icanhascheezburger, someone posts a video: Fennec Fox Demands Love. Cue the "OMGWTF that's a wild animal, why is it captivity!" voices and the "it's totally domesticated, no worries mate, have some fallacies" maddness, and I back away slowly to shake my head (and Science Stick!) far from the drama. My references are all going to be Wiki because I have neither the time nor patience to pull up relevant journals and I am not doing a literature review to shake the Science Stick over the concepts of domestication, tameness, and similar. Grabby hands were made at many things, because I am twelve. Or six, depending on the toy. (I *insert sarcasm* love how their gallery is really just headshot of Important People in the shop, as opposed to, oh, I don't know, their products?)
Day 20: ...I'm going to watch Castle The Secret Diary of a Call Girl tonight even if my alarm clock kills me tomorrow. Yays. Granted, it's officially Day 21 now (Approprite Icon is Appropriate), so Day 20 had... Rasberries with cream. Yes. That was the highlight.

bending_sickle: (Angst!)
I woke up barely on the right side of am today, on account of going to sleep around 3 am last night, on account of that unending meme followed by Grey's Anatomy. (Can I just say, I love Mark and Cally. I don't care whether they're just friends or lovers or raising children together, I love how they were together and what they mean to each other. Excuse me while I covet that sort of relationship.)

When my parents got back this morning from walking around on the beach - a fact I wasn't aware of until they came back, of course, which made me feel loved and oh hai sarcasm - I wasn't the most chipper of things. Then, well, my parents got back, which made the value of the chipperness fall quite a bit more, on account of them - or rather, mom - feeling that I shouldn't participate in family events because I shouldn't be living here anyway and should actually have my own life. Then we're having lunch and the radio decides it hates me and wants to tear my heart into little pieces, because it plays the following three songs: Life by Erykah Badu, Life for Rent by Dido, and Home by Michael Bublé. No cookie for you, radio.

On the plus side, I Did Things today. Granted, those things took a tiny part of the morning and I've done jack squat since then, but still, things were accomplished. Not things I need accomplished (CV rewrite!), or even want (fanfic!), but Things, y'know? They were such small things as cleaning my room - or the floor, at least - and sowing a gaping tear in my purse lining, but they were Things.

Meme: Good Things:

Day 2: Roast lamb, Supernatural and Grey's Anatomy. That was good.
Day 3 The doing of things. That was also good. Also, The Secret Diary of a Call Girl 4x01.

So I'm an indecisive jittery mess. Here's the latest version of Time We Saw a Miracle's blurb:
In an armed camp, Chip and his companions find shelter from the infected and cope with life after the apocalypse. As Icarus struggles with the loss of his angelic grace, Chip discovers there is always something more to fear.

And it is tracking them down.

Your reactions?
a) Kill it with fire!
b) Shiny!
c) What is that last line doing there and how can we make it go away?

My reaction: B followed immediately by C then swinging wildly back to B. Why? My love for The Line will not die, and the blurb is now just three words longer than Time For Something Biblical's and in the same paragraph format. Symmetry is my crack.

Chances are I'll finish Nanowrimo this weekend \o/ And I know what scene I'm going to finish it with! (Even though I don't quite know how I'm going to end it.) Basically, there's just some Comfort to balance out all the Hurt and a little dream sequence of a Happy Ending, because they sure as hell ain't getting it in real life. Fictional life. Whatev'.

In other news, there's been no Castle, Grey's Anatomy or, I'm assuming, Supernatural to squee over this week. Damned Thanksgiving Week hiatus!

Also, I was listening to the audio of Misha's panel at the Asylum Convention, and for the first ten minutes I had to fight my brain. It kept telling me I was listening to Patrick Dempsey (i.e McDreamy) instead of Misha (i.e. McSnarky or just plain McAwesome). This was very distracting and strange and it doesn't help that I still think they do sound alike.

This has left me with the strange desire to rewatch Blonde, "the perv edition" (i.e. the heavily edited-down version with only the This Is relevant to My Interests clips left in), with Patrick Dempsey and Jensen Ackles as Marylin Monroe's simultaneous (douchebag) lovers. You can see why fans would want the perv edition ;)

Nanowrimo: I do believe that tomorrow we will properly meet Kezef and seen Dean do something badass. (Useless, but still badass.) Nano is getting a bit better. I zoomed through most of Chip's afternoon instead of detailing it, which was a huge relief, although the patrol bit was a bit of an uphill struggle. It was necessary, though, to get the whole Kryptonite! Reverse kryptonite! effect, but ye gods, did it hurt to get on paper. Apart from the entries on [livejournal.com profile] sickle_stories, I have a notebook - what used to be an agenda for 2010, but this year hasn't really made me need it - where I jot down scene ideas and snippets of dialogue, and where I try like hell to organize them into some sort of progression. (This happens, that that scene, then this is said, and so forth.) It brings me great squee and sense of accomplishment to cross scenes out with a little \o/ and Yatta!

So far, so good, and by the time Chip heads out on patrol again, he'll have had a heart-to-heart with Icarus (who'll be moping), been assaulted by a demon, and faught off a massive wave of infected (who are anticipating Kezef, who'll show up the next day). That's...a lot of stuff that has to happen.

But the going's still good. I have no idea if the whole is worth anything, but I'm trying to keep all the bits together, keep them moving, and sticking in bits of Chip introspection and panic and angst, because if not it wouldn't be TFSB 2, would it?

...OMG I just realized how pathetically covered in hearts and rainbows the excerpt is. Oh lawdy. It's not supposed to be a "they're soul mates and love each other" thing, but a "they're a team and separate from the others" thing. Oy.

  • Squishy: I met [livejournal.com profile] seschat yesterday! (Although "met" is rather a strange word to use, because I've know her for over a year now.) It was fantastic! There were hugs galore! ♥

  • Squishy: [livejournal.com profile] katarinagram's coming to visit this Christmas! Cue the squee!

  • Prickly: I think I've found the focus for Time for Something Biblical 2 (and no, I never actually settled on a definitive title, despite my flailing). I don't mean a thematic focus or general story arc or anything, but rather an overall image that helps coalesce the world in my mind. For TfSB it was the angel dying upstairs and Supernatural's "The End". For TfSB2, it's Kezef, an Angel of Punishment (wrath and destruction), as the central villain (for a given value of "villain"). I like this because it means I can leave the mess of Sam!Lucifer in the background and focus on the apocalypse and angels and Icarus and Chip and oh the squee.

  • Very, Very Cold Things: Yours truly. It's 15 flippin' degrees in the house all the time and I'm freezing. Just to not die as an ice block in my sleep, I've got socks, two shirts, and a neckerchief added to the usual pijama, and I've got stuffed animals - I have no shame! - tucked in on either side of me because they're better than the gaping huge pockets of frigid air, and I'm huddled under the blanket, bed covers, and duvet. Still cold!

bending_sickle: (Do not start with me)
There are some things about DVD bundles that make me wish I had a) money to burn and b) access to ways I could burn that money to get shiny things. Some episodes in Supernatural, for example, make me yearn for a chance to listen to commentaries.

Unfortunately, apart from [livejournal.com profile] tracy_loo_who's detailed flailings, I haven't been able to find anything on Kripke, Singer and Edlund's The End commentary. I've googled and tag-haunted until my fingers fell off, and nothing. I'm this close to contacting [livejournal.com profile] stir_of_echoes, who was fantastic enough to transcribe the commentary for What is and What Should Never Be but I'm scared of coming off as crazy or demanding or whatnot. So can anyone offer any help on that?

You know what else is bothering me by being all "na na!" non-attainable? (No, it isn't any of the boys of Supernatural, because there has to be at least the illusion of attainability for there to be cause for the "na na!" dance.) It's this podbook and its MP3. I've downloaded both of them, but I can't get them to open. Winzip keeps saying "cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive" and WinRAR says "the archive is either in unknown format or damaged". Now, I've downloaded both files a number of times, so I know they're getting in alright, so I don't know. Is this happening to anyone else? I'd just like to check before I go all "waaah, I cannae get podbook!" to the audiofic archive.

...I'm wondering whether there's any community where I could pimp out my Devour picspam review. Just because it took so much time to put together... Must investigate further.

Sickle's "I can't be bothered to be coherent, have some bullet points instead" entry:

  • I totally had a freakout this morning about getting out of the house or finding something to wear or being on time or something. It wasn't pretty, but it wasn't cripling either. Just a lot of rapid breathing and self-coaxing and mild panic.

  • The cold that's been ravaging my parents this weekend has finally struck me down. My throat's got gnomes scratching their nails down it and my head's hot and squishy.

  • I watched Finding Home yesterday on YouTube because it had Misha. His long blonde hair phase reminded me too much of Karla to be comfortable at first and truly appreciate the view. I liked his character, although like most characters in that movie there wasn't much "character" to go around. I loved how soft-spoken he was, though. (Is there any incarnation of Misha's voice that I do not like? I think not.) The movie itself was decent enough, although you could tell from the story - how it was set up and how certain motifs were played out and repeated - that it was based on a story. Sometimes I felt like smacking the characters, though, and I found the sexual assualt scene incredibly upsetting for some reason, although it wasn't graphic. (I mean, it focused on the "woman fights man off desperately" rather than the "woman stripped and abused" aspect, and it never got too far anyway. I just found it so horrible.)

  • I'm somewhat bored. Although I have quite a bit of things to do, I can't seem to do them. I seem to suck at giving my days structure. I was going to write tonight, but the squishy-headedness and all isn't helping, so I think I'll rewatch Devour and snark at it in written form, which is something I've been meaning to do for a while.

  • I had my first sip of tequila tonight. It really was just a sip. It wasn't anything fantastic, and it burnt a bit, but dad had been going on about how it was the best tequila he'd ever had so I thought, "Hey, I've never tried it, so why not try a good version for the first time?"

Guy: "Hey, is that chick crying?"

Girl: (crying) "YES! AND IT'S PROBABLY YOUR FAULT ANYWAY!"

** This is a person, however, who not only opened and read my preteen diary, but corrected the spelling and put massive question marks in the border. And hid behind my bed in my room, then giggled when I walked in and talked to myself thinking I was alone in my room. Honestly, what the fuck?

It's dad's birthday today, so it's booze and gluttony day! It'll be my birthday on Sunday, and we will undoubtably also revel in food and drink.

I will not, however, revel in Supernatural. "What kind of fuckery is this?" you might say. Well, my parents and I are taking a long weekend off to drive south and be tourists. We'll leave Friday afternoon and be back on Monday afternoon.

What does that mean? It means 1) spoil me and die, 2) squee with me about the premiere come Tuesday or so, yes? [livejournal.com profile] seschat, we can has comment thread?

In other news, I might just have fallen in love with one of the local stray cats of our neighbourhood. Y'all might remember Greebo, the one-eyed, canine-lacking, white-and-grey, affectionate stray that hangs around my apartment building meowing, "Pet me! Pet me!"

Well, he was there today, meowing hello, and I dutifully petted and scritched and rubbed to the soundtrack of delighted purring. Then I walked off to take the metro and my heart promptly melted because Greebo followed me, trotting behind and around and in front. It's so heartwarming to have a little furry thing walk beside you ♥ He followed me for over half a block, then sat down and watched me go. Oh, Greebo, if I had a home and money, I'd take you in right quick.

This afternoon, when I got back home, there he was, splayed out in a doze. The petting was resumed, now with belly rub! And at one point I was scratching his neck and chest and Greebo just lay in blissed-out stillness. ♥ so much.
