Sickle's Summary of Random Things:
  • I'm still on my Bufy the Vampire Slayer rewatch kick and keep discovering things. Like I was watching I Robot, You Jane (1x08, IMDB) and who should I see, all wee and mullet-less, but Chad Lindberg! By which I mean, Supernatural's Ash! And he's still a computer geek genius! \o/

  • I'm slowly getting the hang of socializing-through-coffee. Last week I had coffee with my supervisor's peer - the hierarchy details, they fail me - which was nice, and today I had coffee with someone I'd sent my CV a while back and we talked about other organizations that might be interesting, which was also nice.

  • Socializing-through-lunch seems to be a big thing, too. Last week I was pretty awesome at having lunch with people, and it's how I met a guy who thinks techno is the highest form of music ever made by man, which, okay, and how I learned that the cute I like talking to is nineteen which, um, ah. *backs away slowly*

  • I also had lunch with my supervisor, which was less of a socializing thing and more of an info-dump accompanied with my panicked internal monologue going, "I have no idea what you're talking about. You want me to do what? Do you want me to do that? Wait, what, that too? But the other thing, that is being done by someone else? But I'm going to do- WHAT IS GOING ON?!?" so that was intimidating.

Today, I went out for a walk in the afternoon in the hopes of "raising my spirits" and "clearing my head" and all that other stuff walks are supposed to do, and instead got rained on for the most part, stood under a tiny overhang from a shop while two couples at two different points started arguing bitterly and loudly and that's why I wanted out of the house, universe! and waited for a bus which would not come because it doesn't run Sundays, until I took another one which took me sort of home. Remind me never to take an evening constitutional ever again.

Dad's got Dupuytren's contracture (or, more awesomely, "Viking disease"), which is where "the tough connective tissue within one's hand becomes abnormally thick which can cause the fingers to curl and can result in impaired function of the fingers, especially the small and ring fingers." He's looking into treatment and surgery options.

Now, there's no real known cause for this disease, although there's a lot of finger pointing, particularly at "trauma, diabetes, alcoholism, epilepsy therapy with phenytoin and liver disease." But the interesting thing is that 60-70% of those afflicted have a genetic predisposition to D's c. You know what this means, right? I am totally losing at the Genetic Roulette here. Where my genetics might hurt me. )

bending_sickle: (But I won't like it)
Today was sprinkled with suck, apparently. Consider that it started with my not getting out of the elevator at warp speed, so that it flew right back up to the very top floor when a neighbour rang it. "But I saw the button go dark," he said, referring to the "I'm free! Call me!" button. Yeah, but dude, you have to give me time to get out once the elevator lands.

Then there was work. Work was frustrating because I'm editing the format of a bunch of articles for a collection, and by gods are the articles in some serious need of formatting. Some only give half their references, others throw in copy/pasted lists, and still others decide that one-line paragraphs are teh awesome. Why can't people do things right the first time, or at least be consistent in their own article?

But that wasn't it, either. The office is cold. Like, very cold. Like, I wear wool sweaters and fingerless gloves and sit next to the portable radiator while the heater is rumbling on in the background. That's cold. But my co-worker - the substitute secretary who's from round-about my generation - insists on forgetting to close the door behind her whenever she leaves the room. Rant is ranty )

Also, my mother's back, as I might have mentioned, and we're back to me sucking and me not being able to breathe without being a rude daughter and obviously not even trying to get out of a house I'm just leeching off of which I am trying to keep my head together and not die a little support would be nice. Oh look, another rant. )

I think you can see why I'm not really up to posting or writing or anything at all these days. Like, I have a queue list on YouTube from October, and a fanfic I haven't touched in almost four months, and fanmixes that have been live for two months and still haven't been pimped, and it took me like two weeks to revise my CV and rant continues )

Castle's 2x13 and 3x13 can basically be watched back-to-back as they both deal with the mystery behind Kate Beckett's mother's murder. It seems like the case is very much an onion, with each episode that focuses on it peeling back a new layer of conspiracy and puppettery.

Both episodes also have specific similarities, but the greatest one is the scene where Beckett goes off the case. In 2x13, she goes off voluntarily, while in 3x13 she's kicked off, but in both cases she storms out of Captain Montgomery's office and ignore's Castle's worried call of, "Beckett?" Instead, she yanks her jacket off her chair, flings it over her shoulder, and walks out on Castle's even more worried, "Kate?"

Watching these scenes back-to-back gave me a huge case of déjà vu. While not all of the scene's shots are the same - camera angles differ, especially at the beginning - the treatment of Kate's walk-out is eerily similar. If this is a deliberate choice - especially considering how one episode is basically a continuation of the other - then my hat's off to the directors and producers involved. Also note how both are titled on the similar fight theme: Sucker Punch and Knockdown.

Screencaps )

And by the way, Knockdown had a much more serious tone than is usual for Castle, and it had a few exchanges that left me scrambling for a pen and declaring my undying love for the Ryan&Esposito duo. So allow me to share a few of those quotes - one of Castle and his mother, a few others of Ryan and Esposito being awesome. Spoilers apply, of course. Read more... )

Random Points Along the Sickle Line:
  • I'm currently reading House Rules by Jodi Piccoult (now with podcast!), and I've reached the point where I'm just devouring the thing. It's a really interesting story about a teenage with Asperger's syndrome who's accused of murder. Although I'm rarely into crime novels, this one has a large dash of forensic science as the main character is fascinated by the subject and that aspect of it is one I can really get into. Curiously, I'm also following the law aspect of it quite well and even enjoying it, even though I'm not usually into the intricacies of courts and lawyers and judges and prosecuters and so on. I keep trying to figure out the whodunnit of the novel, much like the other book of hers I've read, Plain Truth. I'm almost at the Big Reveal part of the novel \o/

  • I've gotten all five of the fanmixes for Time We Saw a Miracle all set up except for the final file editing and posting. That was a lot of work, but I'm really happy with them.

  • There's four people from whom I'm waiting to hear from, and have been waiting for going on a month now. Read more... )

  • The week hasn't been fantastic. Nothing productive was actually achieved, drama was had, and German kicked my ass. However, on the plus side? There's people I can count on, and those people are my darlings. Except [livejournal.com profile] seschat. She's my squishy. ♥

In other news, I wrote a letter in German. I think I also broke the word order and a couple declinations. Help? Point and laugh?

Sickle's Brain Went Buh-Bye, Have Some Bullet Points Instead:

  • I got the first quote over on [livejournal.com profile] ljdq's Answers. Whoot whoot!

  • I've had sea shanties stuck in my head for ages, which is both awesome and annoying because I don't actually know the whole songs. So I've been humming bits of Lukey's Boat, Heave Away, Ramblin' Rover and Donkey Riding over and over again.

  • On that topic, Great Big Sea ♥ I watch ed them live years ago, and I loved it. (Or I would have, but I was in the deepest state of depressed funk that whole summer because I'd failed a course.)

  • I watched The Walking Dead last week (1x02) and while it was good, it didn't have the same shiny coating of awesomeness that the pilot did. Plus, it didn't help that I facepalmed at a little plot and science (yes! science! with zombies!) fail. Spoilers )

Nanowrimo 2010:

  • A few days ago I realized that my brain was going "Omg, argh, this sucks!" at Nanowrimo 2010, which was dispiriting because its perception of Nanowrimo 2009 was, "Omg, so organized, it flows so well and argh! Will never be repeated!" but then I saw that whilst I was doing Nanowrimo 2009, my brain was going, "omg, argh, this sucks!" So I guess I'm comforted by the utter suckitude of Nanowrimo 2010. It probably doesn't suck royally (just slightly). It might even make sense in the end!

  • Today's writing session was not so much like pulling teeth and a lot more like bashing my head repeatedly against a wall for the most part. I went back and added to the scenes I'd written yesterday, except one was Icarus, Chip and Dean talking and they didn't actually say all that much except angst and Dean wasn't being a hunter enough, and the other scene was Kezef being all ooooh, evil, but nothing was happening. I tried to fix it and I don't know if I succeded because of the massive amounts of SUCK but it's goddamn over.

  • Next up: Zombie hordes attack! ...this scares me a little, because it's all action with some plottyness on the side plus a reveal and then a panic moment. I do believe we're reaching the big plotty climax from which everything winds down. It's like I have a plot!

In the afternoon, while my parents went off to the reception in conmemoration of Mexico's independence - El grito - I worked on the Push Fanvid for Supernatural I started over a year now. I'm at minute 2:15 - blessedly past the horrid and endless guitar riff - but there's about 1:37 minutes left, and that's including a repetition-of-lyrics at the end.

It's about how being a hunter - being Sam and Dean - is a life where bad things happen to them (even if they're the cause of good things happening in other people) and it's also about the demands and effect of Papa Winchester on their lives.

I'm a tad stumped on the coming verse, which is going to be Dean-centric. If you'd like to fling ideas at me, or have me bounce them off of you, do continue reading. Read more... )

Life and Times, the Sickle-Lost-Her-Brain Version:

- Still frustrated with Italian course and it's "Let's go slow! Let's spend an hour on these exercises! Let's spend yet another class on articles!" despite it being intensive. Along with two other students, complained about this to the teacher. Apparently, we're only going to learn the present tense this whole course and we're going slow because it's beginners. Fuck that shit. It's intensive, we've done fifteen hours and all we've learned is nouns, adjective declinations and definite and indefinite articles. Fuck that shit again.

- Got a reply to my job application (which I could have seen and replied to a few days ago but I am an ass). They'd like an interview (cue freakout) and propose Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, so this morning I replied with a "Wednesday, please!" but they haven't replied yet and I'm freaking out about that not-reply and coming up with worst-case scenarios of them never replying and my having to hound after them or show up at the office or something.

- Said job application is for a place with, according to their LinkedIn profile, four employees. I don't even.

- It's very cold in my room. I've taken to sleeping in caterpillar form, arms and legs all tucked to my sides and my feet have forgotten what it's like to be warm. Not cool, yo.

- I have so many creative ideas or projects and no time! I don't even have time to stay caught up with my shows, much less actually read the things I link to in LotD.

- I am freaking out over the job interview and appointment and there is freakingoutedness!

Supernatural Comments:

I went to two bike shops today and thus got an estimate of what my bike's worth. I've got one guy interested in buying it, so we'll see how my haggling skills go on Saturday. I also think I've got someone interested in my wardrobe, which is awesome. I went to the Hague for a wander about and to see what I could get for some second-hand books, but they only offered fifty cents more than in Leiden, so I'll just get rid of them all here. In less awesome news, the girl who was going to take my room has decided against it at the last minute, so it's back to the drawing board with that.

Blowing up a twin-sized air mattress without a pump leads to tired lungs and jaw ache and leaves me desperate to make the joke of, "Longest. Blow job. Ever," because I'm just fancy that way.

Parents coming in tomorrow night, so the weekend will be spent in a flurry of activity, packing and panicking. Whoot.

ETA: Been watching Supernatural videos and just realized something blatantly obvious in the symbolism department. In the Green Room in Lucifer Rising, Dean tips a small statue of an angel off a shelf. (Exhibit A and Exhibit B) In other words, an angel falls by Dean's hand. Oh Cas...

Another reason I love that detail is that it reminds me of Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel: in one scene of an episode I can't recall, he turns a small statue of an angel around, so it's facing the wall, away from him.

ETA2: Spike's angel-moment is from BtVS 7x06, "Him" and looks a bit like this. (Not remembering was really bugging me.)

Sickle's Day, Cliff-Notes Version:

- Day started off with routine self-loathing due to latelatelateness. Things were better than yesterday, though, in that supreme concentration was not required for menial tasks and the morning's routine was not interrupted by senseless weeping. (Translation: Fail, but not Epic Fail!)

- Biked over to Plexus to ask about where I could get an International Student Card. Biked to the address they gave me. Failed to find the place after a brief scan and then decided to not even try to search more thoroughly considering the time it was already. (Translation: Progress!)

- Arrived at work and wrote out notes for all the edits and additions I need to make in my first draft. (Translation: Fake progress!)

- Had miso soup and two mandarins for lunch. (Translation: Lunch was made of fail!)

- Worked on reading articles about lion manes and on maneless lions, then summarized in preparation for paragraph in the introduction. (Translation: Progress!)

- Spoke a few minutes with Supervisor who wanted some carcass-due-to-drought photos and a lioness' whisker spots. (Translation: Win!)

- Got home, heated up hotdogs for dinner and resolutely refused to go swimming. Did some weights instead. (Translation: Epic fail narrowly averted!)

- Plan to watch Heroes and Castle 1x03, continuing on from yesterday's Castle viewing. I found the show entertaining and light-fare (in that there's no woe or angst or thinky-thoughts going on - yet). Nathan's character is a wonderful caricature most of the time, which is okay because he's hilarious, except for the moments where he's a bit of a sleeze. I adored Castle's mother and daughter and really, really like the father&daughter scenes. There should be more of that in the show. And on TV. And real life. Just, more. (Also, those were the scenes where I most liked Castle.) (Translation: Squee!)

- Watched Lolita (1997) with Jeremy Irons. Liked. Still want to read the book like crazy. Also watched clips from The Catherine Tate Show and now miss Donna. And Ten. Is it Christmas yet?

- Went to a Salsa Solo Workshop at my dance school. Rocked it. Then stuck around for the party. Didn't rock it. Accepted a couple "Shall we dance" but, as cannot dance, failed as a dance partner. (One tried to teach me a few of the steps but too fast.) Talked in broken Dutch to middle-aged Turk which was nice but then he hit on me suggesting we go to disco's in Noordwijk or go dancing next week. Eeeeh...no. Spent quite some time staring at a couple dancing (girl in bellydancer outfit, no less, and guy in a wife-beater with a dragon tattoo) because hot damn they were good and practically liquid with the flow and it was sexy.

Embedded Video - Quick Salsa Lesson and Subitled Music Video for La vida es un carnaval )

- I am starting to listen to salsa and merengue and the likes. Have rediscovered Elvis Crespo (Tu Sonrisa and Suavemente - awesome songs, embarrasingly bad videos) and Celia Cruz (Rie y llora, Oye como va and A medley of her "Azucar!" shout and story behind it all (in Spanish, but ♥)).

- Made lots and lots of icons yesterday of Underworld. Am still not done. There's a lot of Sonja icons - more so that Lucian, sexy beast that he is. Also? Shocked that Michael Sheen isn't a sexy beast when non-Lucian (although scruffy goth or emotastic Russian-spy-ish may work), and likewise shocked he's in Frost/Nixon which a) gives me the giggles because, hello, slash! and b) I really, really want to watch this movie.

- Will start watching Castle (Season 1). There's too many shows I want to start watching, but I've decided that Nathan Fillion's as good as any a show to start with. Whoot Nate!

- Set the mold for newly-bought vampire canines for Halloween so they'd fit my teeth. May have walked around with them for a while, feeling delightfully vampiric.

* Utopia, Doctor Who
bending_sickle: (Diversion)
In celebration of the death of summer, my room has been taken over by laundry (pending- and damp) as well as a suitcase in the midst of one of its great yearly transitions (the summer-winter exchange, less feared than the storage-travel one).

The weekend with Willy was brilliant. We talked mainly about our projects and respective boys. Coo-ee did we talk a lot about the boys and she's agreed that I'm being neither crazy, demanding nor am I exaggerating. So, um, yay? Anyway, it was good to hash it out with someone who knows exactly who and what I'm talking about. (Once this is all settled in Real Life I'm run y'all through it - mainly because I need to hash it out myself.) Then on Saturday night we went to a shared bday party of some of her friends (and omg, sitting on the back of a bike for a long time hurts one's bum a lot). Sunday we took it easy in the morning, then she went to work and I wandered around Amsterdam.

I've been trying to plan out my birthday this coming Saturday. Mom suggests I hang out with the people I'm trying to make friends out of, and I needn't say it's my birthday. I see the logic in that sociality is good and that if you hang out with acquaintances on your bday (and them knowing it is), they may stare at you as if you were a shaven monkey lathering on sunscreen whilst sitting on a parka**, thinking "You seriously don't have anyone better - closer - to hang out with on your bday?"

On the other hand, if I'm to spend my bday with people, I'd rather it be people who care I'm alive. If that's not an option (and when was the last time that was), then I'd rather spend it alone. Alone, yes, but doing things I like. As in, I will give myself an awesome day.

So the plan so far is a late wake-up, a full English breakfast at a local pub***, a stock-up on all sorts of candy and then a stint in the Hague, where dim sum and a movie will be enjoyed. (I'm still a bit hazy on this last bit.) I don't think I'll manage Dutch pancakes or a cake of some sort, but there's always Sunday. Somewhere during all that I hope to receive a call or two from family, but that's about it. This will be awesome and wonderful and not at all sad and the first person to suggest so will be tied to a chair and forced to watch the abysmal film Happy Birthday To Me with the McGill Architectural Porn deleted! Oh yeah, I will stoop so low.
