The internet exploded over the FBI's crackdown on Megaupload as well as on the SOPA and ACTA. See collected Tumblr posts about it here. Some are informative, some are reactive, and some are just the internet coping. The internet is sinking. Key posts are Whoa, guys, they just shut down Megaupload and arrested a bunch of people., I know that everyone wants to be witty and make an impact when they post about SOPA/PIPA/ACTA, and they mostly talk about the things they won’t be able to watch or listen to, but it’s much more serious than that., What is ACTA, Anonymous Goes On Megaupload Revenge Spree, Fake new megaupload: Megavideo.bz, used by Anonymous, Black March campaign, Breaking News twitter

Nanowrimo, Day 9: \o/ Finally got to introduce Crowley. Saving most of the snark for tomorrow (broken up with a scene of Kezef), but I think I'm going to enjoy this next bit. There's a lot going on and Crowley's going to be exposition man. Or, more realistically, "Oops, you didn't want them to know that, did you? Oh dear, angel, whatever are you going to do."

I'm still in my "watch all the Mark Sheppard things!" mode. I've followed Mark into some amazing new shows - Leverage and White Collar and Battlestar Galactica - and into some watchable ones - Warehouse 13 and Chuck, for example. Then there's Bionic Woman and Middle Man, which I plowed through out of sheer devotion to Mark's minor character. Oh, Mark...

Right now, I'm watching 24 and I almost wish I were watching Middle Man. At least that one was amusing. For one, it doesn't help that this is totally not my style of show. There's no fantasy and no science, so that's me clutching at staws to find something I can invest in. I'm shit out of luck doing that with Mark's character because the first episode he's in, he's hunkered down in a crowd, head in his hands. The second one, he's got tiny scenes of sitting in a car. (Sitting well and lovely, but still.) Right now I'm hanging onto Grey's Anatomy's Teddy and The Lord of the Rings Sam to get me through. That and the awesome character Chloe O'Brian.

But I can handle that, no problem. What I cannot handle is how the male characters are responding to and treating two female characters. Read more... )

Sickle's Random Points:
  • Yesterday I saw the most hilarious sight. I almost wished I'd had my camera, but then I doubt I would've been allowed to take one, or would've had the guts to do so. On my way to and from work, I pass by a mysterious corner with a permanent jeep and two soldiers in camouflage with bullet-proof vests and rifles. They're always there and they won't say why. Yesterday, waiting to cross the street at that very corner, was a pudgy man with black glasses and a camouflage shir. Oh, the ironic contrast!

  • I've watched more guest-starring-Mark-Sheppard Battlestar Galactica episodes and okay, I'll admit I like the show. Not all the time, but I really like Lee Adama and Patchy - sorry, Saul Tigh - as well as Cylon Six and Gaius. I particularly enjoyed the courtroom episodes that ended season 3.

  • That last may have something to do with the fact that I love it when Mark Sheppard's characters shout. So far as I can remember, they all have, and man, he roars and it's adorable. And awesome. He'll hunker down and his face'll just do a perfect angry-O-with-scrunchy-eyebrows. Oh, the squee.

  • But most of all I love Romo Lampkin. This is not just because of who his face is. The writing, the character's history and psychology, I just... The tiny little detail about him taking care of his ex-wife's cat, which he claims he hates but loses his shit over when it dies, and the story of how he lost his wife, whom just a few episodes before he'd given this whole gorgeous speech about how much he hurt without her... I love this character and all his lying, theiving flaws. He's a person.

  • It is hot. It is very hot. It is over 37 degrees hot. It is does-not-go-below-thirty-in-my-room-at-night hot. It is oh-gods-this-headache-is-kililng-me hot. It is I-will-rub-this-wet-rag-over-me-forever hot. *melts*

They say that yesterday it felt like 40 degrees Celcius, and today it basically felt just as hot. I had lunch outside 'cause that's where all the cool kids interns and volunteers eat, but just as I sat down they rolled up the tarps and exposed the whole balcony to the firey heat of a thousand suns. We, being young, stubborn, and stupid, stayed on, bravely sweating over our trays, squinting at each other's faces, and trying not to burn our fingers with the cutlery. Meanwhile, the pigeons were walking over tables and nabbing beans off of someone's forgotten half-eaten salad.

This afternoon my mom was listening to some Baroque music, including Pachelbel's Canon in D Major and I don't know if it's the heat or what, but I swear some of its melody is in Spiritualized's "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space", meaning the "I will love you till I die and I will love you all the time, so please put your sweat hand in mine and float in space and drift in time" line.

...aaaand a quick google tells me that ain't news. *sigh* Now I no longer feel so accomplished. Also, songs based on Pachelbel's Canon and Paravonian's Pachelbel Rant.

So again, not dead. Also, curiously enough, not exhausted. But work doesn't leave me much time for posting and surfing and Links of the Day, which is why sometimes this past week I've looked at the bed and said, "Ah, screw it, let's sleep." (Or rewatch Doctor Who Season 5, and sputter about things we still don't know about River - what did the Bishop in Time of Angels mean? - or about the finale - why 26/06/2010?)

However, I can report back that work is going well. So far it's still a lot of reading - although now they've brought down and hooked up my computer in my new shared office, so yay typing and oncoming productivity! I attended some presentations last week, and had an informal lunch meeting, and have a meeting tomorrow (where I think I'm supposed to introduce myself to the larger team). I've met more people than I could possibly ever remember and they've all been nice. Ah, international environment, how I've missed you! I've walked miles going from one part of the building to the other, getting lost in corridors and on staircases. I swear it's a bloody TARDIS-baby.

Last week I kept getting home absolutely exhausted - all read-out and socialized-out and languaged-out. Also, curisouly, with a raving desire for creativity. I've worked on that Not What I Had In My Head drawing (and worked on it so much it went from decent-enough to shite and back again) and have discovered The Coloured Pencils as well as the Badly Mangled Watercolours from my childhood. I also have charcoal pencils, so at least one version of the drawing is going to be passable. I even took Betsy out for a bit - didn't play her or even tuner her up, but I did wipe the dirt of her poor little guitar body.

I was doing rather poorly yesterday with what might have been a stomach bug. The kind that scuttles around wreaking havoc whilst white blood cells stand on chairs and scream, tossing rolled-up newspapers onto the floor in a hopeless attempt at stopping the infestation.

Today we took to the car and supposedly went to a Medieval town with a lovely view of the lake, but all we got to see was rain coming at us in all directions, so we had a coffee (with flavoured sugar!) and went back home.

I appear to have developed a crush on Misfits's Simon, which means a certain unfilicious episode will probably be rewatched. I also watched the Rifftrax version of X-Men yesterday, and somehow that made the movie ten times more boring. I liked that film, damnit. And all the while yesterday I was watching it thinking, "This is so ridiculous and nothing's happening." I don't even.

Today was sprinkled with suck, apparently. Consider that it started with my not getting out of the elevator at warp speed, so that it flew right back up to the very top floor when a neighbour rang it. "But I saw the button go dark," he said, referring to the "I'm free! Call me!" button. Yeah, but dude, you have to give me time to get out once the elevator lands.

Then there was work. Work was frustrating because I'm editing the format of a bunch of articles for a collection, and by gods are the articles in some serious need of formatting. Some only give half their references, others throw in copy/pasted lists, and still others decide that one-line paragraphs are teh awesome. Why can't people do things right the first time, or at least be consistent in their own article?

But that wasn't it, either. The office is cold. Like, very cold. Like, I wear wool sweaters and fingerless gloves and sit next to the portable radiator while the heater is rumbling on in the background. That's cold. But my co-worker - the substitute secretary who's from round-about my generation - insists on forgetting to close the door behind her whenever she leaves the room. Rant is ranty )

Also, my mother's back, as I might have mentioned, and we're back to me sucking and me not being able to breathe without being a rude daughter and obviously not even trying to get out of a house I'm just leeching off of which I am trying to keep my head together and not die a little support would be nice. Oh look, another rant. )

I think you can see why I'm not really up to posting or writing or anything at all these days. Like, I have a queue list on YouTube from October, and a fanfic I haven't touched in almost four months, and fanmixes that have been live for two months and still haven't been pimped, and it took me like two weeks to revise my CV and rant continues )

I suppose even if I say I've been meaning to post for the past week it doesn't detract from the fact that I haven't posted this whole year so far. It's not for want of things to say, either, just that time seems to have taken amphetamines and is working double-fast. So I'm going to try to catch up in the time-honoured fashion of bullet points.

Why Rome Is a Bad Place:
  • On the mid-morning of December 31st, my mom was making her way back from the market with a few bags of vegetables walking down a main street near our house. Then Bad Things Happened )

Sickle's Daily Life:
  • I can has job! Okay, so it's part-time and for a limited time at that (January to May) and at the Institute where I did my internship, but still. Job. Read more... )

  • Any day now, the proof copy of Time We Saw a Miracle is going to make its way through the US mail system and there will be joy and rejoicing. Well, maybe not, because it's going to my brother's address (so much safer than asking an American company to send something super special across the pond to Italy). Still, book.

  • I've been working on the four (oh gods, four) fanmixes for Time We Saw a Miracle. I've got three with their songs pretty much narrowed down and in a decent enough order, which still amazes me because I had so many songs to wade through.

  • I read The Red Tree by [livejournal.com profile] greygirlbeast (Caitlin R. Kiernan) this past week although "read" isn't the word so much as "avidly devoured".

I was a tiny bit disappointed for all of two seconds when I discovered that the novel wasn't written in the wonderful run-on sentences of Threshold (because gods do I love that writing) but as I said, that lasted two seconds and then I was hooked and loving it.

Oh, and I totally called The Thing About Constance, but that's okay because while I suspected it, I never really believed that's where it was going, so was still pleasantly surprised and still thoroughly enjoyed the slight paranoia I was sharing with Sara.

I was not expecting the sex scenes or maybe it was just two details that stuck in my head and won't go away, involving sex toys, but either way, it fit.

I was struck by a few details like the insomnia and the seizures where I could point to and say, hey, [livejournal.com profile] greygirlbeast's Real Life is poking though, and that was actually nice because I could draw upon all her descriptions of what she's gone through and understand it all the more. I also liked that a few details and scenes I could pick out from Threshold's universe-vault, or maybe it's just [livejournal.com profile] greygirlbeast's general universe details and I just haven't read enough of her work to know.

    Still, there were spoilers )

Sickle Hits the Fandom:
  • Grey's Anatomy is back, baby! There were happy couples and rapid-fire drama and sweet jambalaya Christina Yang I missed you. The characters made me happy, except Meredith who for the first time ever completely alienated me from her drama and made me say, "Good gods, woman, you're being petty and over-dramatic." But then Cally was all amazing, so it's all good.

  • Castle was watched in the company of my mom, which meant a lot of pausing and recapping and explaining, but it's really nice to be able to watch a show with someone and squee.

  • Supernatural is still absent from my life (especially considering I barely even have time to read fic or meta) but my wallpaper's a screencap of the Dean's promo bit, and when mom asked who it was, out came Google Images and parental approval. Seriously, that boy is too pretty.

  • Human Target was Human Target again! \o/ Rejoice! Read more... ) So yeah, Human Target was its usual crazy fun self with the blatant disregard for reality we all know and love and I clapped like a happy, happy seal.

Sickle Shows Signs of Life, Fails Miserably:

  • I'm on Chapter 7 of 13 in the editing of Nanowrimo 2010. It's actually better than my sleep-deprived memories insisted it was, and there's some elements that keep popping up that give it the illusion of a theme. I'm going to give TfSB an edit as well sometime soon, because a) it's embarrassingly full of typos and b) I want my volunteer internship supervisor to read it first before handing over TWSaM. (I've talked about the book with her a lot, and she's been really supportive and interested in it, and would like to read it, so yays!)

  • Watched L'Herrisson yesterday, a French film about a very intelligent little girl bent on committing suicide on her twelfth birthday, the consierge, a quite woman with hidden depths, and the new Japanese neighbour who courts her. It was wonderful and beautiful, even if the ending made me wail against the world.

  • On Tuesday, the students of Rome - and the whole country - went out in a manifestation which blocked the whole of downtown and the metro. This resulted in my first staring at the closed metro station displaying schopero, then taking bus one so I could connect to bus two, except bus one never went to where it was supposed to connect because the whole center was blocked so I ended up taking a really long tour around downtown, across the river, through a couple tunnels, until I finally managed to get off somewhere near the Vatican and Castel Sant Angelo. I walked to where I was supposed to find bus two, but that was closed to traffic, pretty much, so I ended up walking all the way home in the rain. I got home 3:15 hours after I was supposed to, and most of that was walking. I was displeased.

  • I've been scanning documents like mad these past few days, which while boring and on-my-feet work, it has allowed me to catch up on audiobooks and podcasts. I should probably write this is my profile, but I have mad love for Winchester Radio and Monster Talk (science!) and am currently listening to The Vesuvius Club as recommended by [livejournal.com profile] qthewetsprocket

  • About a month ago I had a meet-and-greet with someone from Organization, where I basically handed over my CV and met the interns, whom I had lunch with at the cafeteria. I also got chatted up by the security guard during the half hour I was waiting to be let into the Organization (crazy security measures of crazy) and he gave me his number, but I've let that slide. I've been meaning to write about that for ages, so here it is.

  • I'm going to Chicago on Sunday - my brother's not coming for Christmas, so I'm the official family representative. I'll be back the 17th and [livejournal.com profile] katarinagram's coming the 21st for the holidays, so there is much squee.

Sickle's Brain Went Buh-Bye, Have Some Bullet Points Instead:

  • I got the first quote over on [livejournal.com profile] ljdq's Answers. Whoot whoot!

  • I've had sea shanties stuck in my head for ages, which is both awesome and annoying because I don't actually know the whole songs. So I've been humming bits of Lukey's Boat, Heave Away, Ramblin' Rover and Donkey Riding over and over again.

  • On that topic, Great Big Sea ♥ I watch ed them live years ago, and I loved it. (Or I would have, but I was in the deepest state of depressed funk that whole summer because I'd failed a course.)

  • I watched The Walking Dead last week (1x02) and while it was good, it didn't have the same shiny coating of awesomeness that the pilot did. Plus, it didn't help that I facepalmed at a little plot and science (yes! science! with zombies!) fail. Spoilers )

Nanowrimo 2010:

  • A few days ago I realized that my brain was going "Omg, argh, this sucks!" at Nanowrimo 2010, which was dispiriting because its perception of Nanowrimo 2009 was, "Omg, so organized, it flows so well and argh! Will never be repeated!" but then I saw that whilst I was doing Nanowrimo 2009, my brain was going, "omg, argh, this sucks!" So I guess I'm comforted by the utter suckitude of Nanowrimo 2010. It probably doesn't suck royally (just slightly). It might even make sense in the end!

  • Today's writing session was not so much like pulling teeth and a lot more like bashing my head repeatedly against a wall for the most part. I went back and added to the scenes I'd written yesterday, except one was Icarus, Chip and Dean talking and they didn't actually say all that much except angst and Dean wasn't being a hunter enough, and the other scene was Kezef being all ooooh, evil, but nothing was happening. I tried to fix it and I don't know if I succeded because of the massive amounts of SUCK but it's goddamn over.

  • Next up: Zombie hordes attack! ...this scares me a little, because it's all action with some plottyness on the side plus a reveal and then a panic moment. I do believe we're reaching the big plotty climax from which everything winds down. It's like I have a plot!
