A person who feels lonely regardless of if she is at a family gathering, with friends, or alone is experiencing chronic loneliness. It does not matter what goes on in the surrounding environment, the experience of loneliness is always there.

Quote of the Day: Tupac Shakur, "Keep Ya Head Up"
Since we all came from a woman, got our name from a woman, and our game from a woman, I wonder why we take from women, why we rape our women, do we hate our women? I think its time we killed for our women, be real to our women, try to heal our women, 'cause if we dont we'll have a race of babies that will hate the ladies, who make the babies. And since a man can't make one he has no right to tell a women when and where to create one.

Sickle's Random Tid-Bits:
  • I finally watched an episode of Battlestar Galactica, which I've been meaning to watch in full for ages. Obviously it was a Mark Sheppard episode - 3x18, "The Son Also Rises" - and he was basically the reason I watched it. And, it turns out, the only reason I liked it.

Sure, I was jumping smack in the middle of the third season with only a basic knowledge of the whole series' storyline, but I didn't enjoy it because I got lost. And it wasn't because I didn't feel for the characters, because I did, for some, even without knowing their life history. I don't know, I think it was just all the politics and intrigue and all that type of happenings that made me not like it, because I've figured out that that is just not my genre. Thrillers and spies and politics - even if they are in space! - just isn't my thing.

But that said, it really is a good show. Good pacing, good look, excellent writing. And by that I mean I absolutely adored all of Romo Lampkin [Mark Sheppard]'s speeches. His character had a slight Irish lilt to it, which was charming once I actually figured out what accent it was I was hearing - because previous to that I was just all ears going, "What? What accent is that? Where is that from? Is that, what?"

I actually had to extract some of his speeches and made them into MP3s (wanna listen?) because I just loved them so much. Mark, damnit, do audiobooks.

So in sum, I'll be watching more BSG, but only the kind with Mark Sheppard in it, until and if I get hooked on it and want to watch the whole thing.

Oh, and on a completely different not, the president? Couldn't keep her apart from Doctor Who's Sarah Jane Smith in my head. I'm okay with that.

  • The newspaper did an article on prostitution zones in Rome, and so I learned that there are two zones in my neighbourhood. There's seven women right around our place - which doesn't surprise me, as I knew of five and actually walk by their hang-out place which is a little park every day to and from work - and some twenty-one a bit farther away - coincidently, where one night my mother and I were walking and were called at from a car and we knew they'd mistaken us for prostitutes. So that makes almost thirty prostitutes right in my area. Huh.

  • One of my co-workers, who's camping out at a friend's place until he can find one of his own, got robbed. In his apartment. At night. While he was sleeping. Someone ninjaed in through an open second-story window and took his friend's TV, his iPhone and wallet. Apart from being freaked the fuck out over someone being in his house while he's sleeping, he didn't have a dime on him. He went to his folk's for the weekend, to recover a bit until he could move in to his new place. The worst thing? This is totally not an unheard of or even uncommon thing in Rome.

  • I just realized today that it's going to be ten years since I graduated from highschool and started university, and I've got a friend who's at that stage right now. (The best thing? We're both like, "What age difference?") Ah, squishy ♥ And since it's that season, there's a few Tumblr things about starting university which mean a lot because I can remeber it all happening, and because I'm seeing it happening to my squishy. So this.

bending_sickle: (But I won't like it)
Yesterday's meet-and-greet at Organization went well, even if my brain flatlined a few times and I found myself unable to string words together without stumbling over them. Apparently talking to someone I don't know makes me forget grammar and vocabulary in any language now. The person I spoke with gave me some suggestions - basically just to email people directly involved in projects I'd be interested in, saying, "hi! I'm here! if you ever need anyone! hi!" - and will circulate my CV around.

Today there was a nation-wide transportation strike, which meant I woke up an hour early to catch the last metro and waiting outside in the cold until I could get in the office. I started writing an SPN fic while I was at it, because apparently I can't finish fics. *sigh* Then, to get home, I decided to walk the hour back instead of wait around for four hours for the metro to start up again for a brief shining moment, or try and squeeze into any available bus and take three hours to get home like last time.

The rest of the day I spent working on a variety of fannish projects and watching Dharma and Greg. I was going to watch Paranormal Activity 2 tonight, but I figure it's a touch too late for that now.

In other news, my right eyelid's been twitching on and off for the whole day now, and it's really annoying. The Internet says I probably need more sleep, less caffeine, or less stress, to which I say, fat chance.

I'm slowly working my way through my WIPs. For example, I finally installed a video editing programme which is better than Windows Movie Maker and, hopefully, will not freeze everytime I look at it. The installation went by without a hitch, but now there's the problem that I have no idea how to use it. Instantly intuitive, it is not. For the moment, I'm going to stick with WMM because I finally have the omgworkonfanvideeee bug back, but I will, eventually, learn how to use the new programme. Once that's utterly dominated, I will be able to make a wee dent in my gigantic To-Do fanvid list. So while no progress was actually made, I've re-re-replanned out the last few verses and who knows, I might actually work on a line sometime this week. I will finish that bastard even if it's on my 90th birthday!

The muse for the written word continues to be MIA, but I'm making good progress on the screencapping-and-snarking project for Friday 13th. Yay progress! (Well, progress is easy when all you do is resize and adjust contrast, but still.)

What I have accomplished, however, is watching a lot of television and film. For example, I watched all of Dharma and Greg's season 2, and now I'm whipping thrugh Grandma's House because Simon Amstell is adorable and that's pretty all that passes through my head as I watch it. Oh, Simon, listen to your mum! Get back on Nevermind the Buzzcocks!

Also watched was Waitress which was very good, a bit sad, had VERY GOOD PIE OMG, and was completely misrepresented by the trailer. (Light romantic comedy my ass!) It's made quite a bit sadder by the fact that the director, writer and co-star was murdered shortly after.

Oh, and I finally got paid for the Actual Proper Work I did in January. I has bling! ...I has no plans for said bling.

As a society we still have a lot of improvements to make, but the fact that there are people who feel safe enough mentioning their same sex relationships in conversation with a complete stranger means that there's no doubt about it, there have been improvements since I was a kid. And that's a good, comforting sign, even if those improvements are taking more time than they should <3.

Today was sprinkled with suck, apparently. Consider that it started with my not getting out of the elevator at warp speed, so that it flew right back up to the very top floor when a neighbour rang it. "But I saw the button go dark," he said, referring to the "I'm free! Call me!" button. Yeah, but dude, you have to give me time to get out once the elevator lands.

Then there was work. Work was frustrating because I'm editing the format of a bunch of articles for a collection, and by gods are the articles in some serious need of formatting. Some only give half their references, others throw in copy/pasted lists, and still others decide that one-line paragraphs are teh awesome. Why can't people do things right the first time, or at least be consistent in their own article?

But that wasn't it, either. The office is cold. Like, very cold. Like, I wear wool sweaters and fingerless gloves and sit next to the portable radiator while the heater is rumbling on in the background. That's cold. But my co-worker - the substitute secretary who's from round-about my generation - insists on forgetting to close the door behind her whenever she leaves the room. Rant is ranty )

Also, my mother's back, as I might have mentioned, and we're back to me sucking and me not being able to breathe without being a rude daughter and obviously not even trying to get out of a house I'm just leeching off of which I am trying to keep my head together and not die a little support would be nice. Oh look, another rant. )

I think you can see why I'm not really up to posting or writing or anything at all these days. Like, I have a queue list on YouTube from October, and a fanfic I haven't touched in almost four months, and fanmixes that have been live for two months and still haven't been pimped, and it took me like two weeks to revise my CV and rant continues )

AND I KEEP GETTING SPAM COMMENTS ON MONTHS-OLD LIVEJOURNAL POSTS WTF.

Chances are I'll finish Nanowrimo this weekend \o/ And I know what scene I'm going to finish it with! (Even though I don't quite know how I'm going to end it.) Basically, there's just some Comfort to balance out all the Hurt and a little dream sequence of a Happy Ending, because they sure as hell ain't getting it in real life. Fictional life. Whatev'.

In other news, there's been no Castle, Grey's Anatomy or, I'm assuming, Supernatural to squee over this week. Damned Thanksgiving Week hiatus!

Also, I was listening to the audio of Misha's panel at the Asylum Convention, and for the first ten minutes I had to fight my brain. It kept telling me I was listening to Patrick Dempsey (i.e McDreamy) instead of Misha (i.e. McSnarky or just plain McAwesome). This was very distracting and strange and it doesn't help that I still think they do sound alike.

This has left me with the strange desire to rewatch Blonde, "the perv edition" (i.e. the heavily edited-down version with only the This Is relevant to My Interests clips left in), with Patrick Dempsey and Jensen Ackles as Marylin Monroe's simultaneous (douchebag) lovers. You can see why fans would want the perv edition ;)

Today I signed up for a week-long ski trip with the international students, because it would be good for me to be social, and I'll never again have the opportunity for an event that cheap, and because my parents think I should.

Skiing scares the shit out of me, I'll have to say. It's the speed and the thought of falling downhill, like there's a precipice at the end of the hill and I'm just going to fall off. I can ski decently well, but it feels a bit like I'm about to freakin' die of fear.

The fear of speed is a lovely little psychological scar from the time I was riding a particular bastard of a horse Read more... ) So that's why the sensation of speed freaks me out, and why I don't quite enjoy skiing. But I've signed up and I'm going to go and hopefully make friends and have people to hang out with for a week somewhere in France. And two days after that, in March, I'm hopping over to Rome again, because I've got to experience Easter Mass with the Pope and all that jazz.

Apart from that, I've skimmed through 420 job placements in the biology section of a search page, eaten cake, watched Nightmare on Elm Street 2 and failed at life.

I was trolling through my old entries yesterday looking for stuff, when I came across the entry for March 21, 2008 and I realized, with horror and disappointment and defeatism, that I'm at the same place as that post. Almost two years later, and I'm in the same fucking corner.

It might be the only sunshine he sees all day.*

So my graduation has come and gone. I got there half an hour early and waited outside while Important People fiddled with papers. As one of these people walked passed me and into the room, she asked if I was alone. Yeah, it's just me. I could hear them a bit later, saying how I was helemaal alleen** and I felt just awful about it, not having a single soul present with me. Any friend I might have had at the graduation was out of the country - including Willy - as were my parents and brother, and my supervisors were also out of the country and my program supervisor had gotten fired last year during the department's Epic Shrinkage.

There were three people seated at a long table and I sat across from them in a chair, a bit like this (but in a nicer room, with less space away from the table and with no drugs anywhere). The guy in the middle read out a little speech about the program I'd done and my average grade and how he was "delighted" (yes, with air quotes*** and all) to give me the diploma.

But first, Maarten (the prof' who'd helped me with the ArcGIS program) had a few words prepared, which he read out, mainly detailing what I'd done, just listing it out and the like. There were brief references to anecdotes or somesuch and a few comments on myself as a student and as a person. Then he read out a bit that my supervisor had sent, which was totally unexpected and really sweet of him. Then I got my papers, signed the giant Guest Graduate Book.

Then Maarten accompanied me to the Sweating Room (where students used to wait before their exams) to add my signature onto the wall amongst the thousands of others (including, protected behind clear plastic, those of the Queen, a few Princes, Mandela and Churchill). The walls were packed. Maarten took a couple pics, which was very sweet of him - I'll post 'em when I get 'em.

He then invited me for a coffee, seeing as I had absolutely no one. Pity coffee, I can has. But it was, again, very sweet of him and I actually had a good time talking with him for an hour and a half. He even gave me a graduation gift! A frame photograph of Amboseli with Kilimanjaro in the background, taken from the Observation Hill and overlooking the swamp and incoming elephants. (Yes, I know exactly where it was taken.) I am just blown over by his kindness. I have no idea what I would've done instead - wandered around like a sad wet wraith, I guess.

Current Life in Sickledom: Sucktastic. Still not finding anything in my field, or anything I'd be qualified for. No panic today, but then also less work done. Trying to put shoulder to the wheel, but am lacking in carrot-onna-stick to help me do so. In sum: argh.

Video of the Day: Opening for the (fake) Watchmen Saturday morning cartoon series. - Oh my gods, it's hilariously aweful. Although Eddie/Laurie DO NOT WANT. See? I do have an incest squick. It just..has low walls. Embedded )

Status Report: Gods bless antibiotics!

I woke up with my heart racing because my phone was ringing (shock, I know). It was mom, being all, "I has money for phone! But I can not spend monies, so bye!"

Then I made an appointment for the emergency weekend doctor, Read more... )

So off to my pharmacy which was...closed. Permanently. So off to a - ooh, I can't think of the word now, not-pharmacy, Jean Coutu without the prescription meds sort of place - to ask for directions, then a wait then pills. \o/

Then I bought terribly greasy food at the market (like, "Oh my gods, I feel so ill, let me never eat that again," greasy, no matter that it's fish), had lunch, and crawled into bed.

Cue Grey's Anatomy marathon. Whilst crying, because that show has yet made an episode that will not make me cry. Honestly, I'm just watching Season 2 for the Jeffrey Dean Morgan scenes, which will be awesome. And someday I'll need to re-watch PS: I Love You because holy gods, JDM and Irish accents!

At the moment I feel like I've chewed out the inner lining of my lower lip, have a headache (still) and am hungry yet nauseaus (stupid greasy food). Sushi! And Dollhouse! Then back to Grey's Anatomy, with knitting, and another pill just before sleep. Ah, medicine, how I love thee.
