• Yesterday I saw the most hilarious sight. I almost wished I'd had my camera, but then I doubt I would've been allowed to take one, or would've had the guts to do so. On my way to and from work, I pass by a mysterious corner with a permanent jeep and two soldiers in camouflage with bullet-proof vests and rifles. They're always there and they won't say why. Yesterday, waiting to cross the street at that very corner, was a pudgy man with black glasses and a camouflage shir. Oh, the ironic contrast!


• I've watched more guest-starring-Mark-Sheppard Battlestar Galactica episodes and okay, I'll admit I like the show. Not all the time, but I really like Lee Adama and Patchy - sorry, Saul Tigh - as well as Cylon Six and Gaius. I particularly enjoyed the courtroom episodes that ended season 3.


• That last may have something to do with the fact that I love it when Mark Sheppard's characters shout. So far as I can remember, they all have, and man, he roars and it's adorable. And awesome. He'll hunker down and his face'll just do a perfect angry-O-with-scrunchy-eyebrows. Oh, the squee.


• But most of all I love Romo Lampkin. This is not just because of who his face is. The writing, the character's history and psychology, I just... The tiny little detail about him taking care of his ex-wife's cat, which he claims he hates but loses his shit over when it dies, and the story of how he lost his wife, whom just a few episodes before he'd given this whole gorgeous speech about how much he hurt without her... I love this character and all his lying, theiving flaws. He's a person.


• It is hot. It is very hot. It is over 37 degrees hot. It is does-not-go-below-thirty-in-my-room-at-night hot. It is oh-gods-this-headache-is-kililng-me hot. It is I-will-rub-this-wet-rag-over-me-forever hot. *melts*

* George Mikes, How to Be a Brit

Random Points Along the Sickle Line:

• I'm currently reading House Rules by Jodi Piccoult (now with podcast!), and I've reached the point where I'm just devouring the thing. It's a really interesting story about a teenage with Asperger's syndrome who's accused of murder. Although I'm rarely into crime novels, this one has a large dash of forensic science as the main character is fascinated by the subject and that aspect of it is one I can really get into. Curiously, I'm also following the law aspect of it quite well and even enjoying it, even though I'm not usually into the intricacies of courts and lawyers and judges and prosecuters and so on. I keep trying to figure out the whodunnit of the novel, much like the other book of hers I've read, Plain Truth. I'm almost at the Big Reveal part of the novel \o/


• I've gotten all five of the fanmixes for Time We Saw a Miracle all set up except for the final file editing and posting. That was a lot of work, but I'm really happy with them.


• There's four people from whom I'm waiting to hear from, and have been waiting for going on a month now. ( Read more... )


• The week hasn't been fantastic. Nothing productive was actually achieved, drama was had, and German kicked my ass. However, on the plus side? There's people I can count on, and those people are my darlings. Except seschat. She's my squishy. ♥

In other news, I wrote a letter in German. I think I also broke the word order and a couple declinations. Help? Point and laugh?

*waves* I'm back! Working on catching up, have loads of scribbles to transcribe and half-formed ideas to develop, as well as hundreds of photos from galavanting across Europe. Meanwhile, I'm going to snack on (burnt) coconut macarrons, tea, and the Winchesters. Folks are away until next Sunday, so I've got plenty of space and time to do as I'd like and then some.

* History of the World: Part 1, Mel Brooks

Not much to recount for the past few days. Yesterday my parents and I went to an open-air classical ballet show by a Kazakhstan group. It went like this: "Wierd... Very weird. And very short. Meh. Again, short. They don't look very confident. Hey, nice! Stop doing really short pieces! I'm getting tired of balettus interruptus! Satyrs! Awesomesauce! You jump, you awesome satyr king you! Oh, these again... Meh. And them again. Look, you just twirled around the stage, I'm not going to clap!. Oooh! constumes of win! Yay, satyr-king guy again! Whoot! And it's over."

Today's my mom's birthday (which means we ate seafood and will dine on champagne) and tomorrow she's off to Spain for the week to hang with her aunt, who's gone off to her holiday house alone and maybe shouldn't be. So mom's stocking the fridge and leaving instructions like my dad and I might just die without her for a few days.

In other news, still psyched on Echo Bazaar. I wish life were a bit more like that. I mean, I wish you could clearly see that this action gets you points in this that area and that you've going to need to stick to that activity if you want to move on to that other one. It's so straighforwardly goal-oriented! *sigh*

* Echo Bazaar

I went to two bike shops today and thus got an estimate of what my bike's worth. I've got one guy interested in buying it, so we'll see how my haggling skills go on Saturday. I also think I've got someone interested in my wardrobe, which is awesome. I went to the Hague for a wander about and to see what I could get for some second-hand books, but they only offered fifty cents more than in Leiden, so I'll just get rid of them all here. In less awesome news, the girl who was going to take my room has decided against it at the last minute, so it's back to the drawing board with that.

Blowing up a twin-sized air mattress without a pump leads to tired lungs and jaw ache and leaves me desperate to make the joke of, "Longest. Blow job. Ever," because I'm just fancy that way.

Parents coming in tomorrow night, so the weekend will be spent in a flurry of activity, packing and panicking. Whoot.

ETA: Been watching Supernatural videos and just realized something blatantly obvious in the symbolism department. In the Green Room in Lucifer Rising, Dean tips a small statue of an angel off a shelf. (Exhibit A and Exhibit B) In other words, an angel falls by Dean's hand. Oh Cas...

Another reason I love that detail is that it reminds me of Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel: in one scene of an episode I can't recall, he turns a small statue of an angel around, so it's facing the wall, away from him.

ETA2: Spike's angel-moment is from BtVS 7x06, "Him" and looks a bit like this. (Not remembering was really bugging me.)

...Today Is the First Day of the Rest of Your Life.*


After much freaking out and "I cannae do this, Captain!" I managed to call the guy from FAO about volunteerships and internships. I stuttered a bit, shook a bit more, and finally managed to speak. He, on the other hand, sounded like the most wonderful person ever. He basically told me to go the usual route with the forms and stuff, but he told me about two other agencies that do similar work and also provided his email so I could forward him my application. So \o/ on that.

I then went and had lunch with Willy, and there was much squee and joy. It was pretty hilarious how I was high on caffeine and sociality and saying how I was miserable with the biggest grin on my face. Oh brain, you so weird!

And continuing our nightly tradition of anxiety dreams, or nightmares, I had another one! About having two buckets full of water and trying to move fish out of one, realizing that the big fish were eating the small ones so panicking even more about taking the fish out, then realizing that the big bucket I was holding the two buckets in has a mother-lovin' baby crocodile in it and then the bucket I'm holding is practically churning with little crocodiles and there's a tortoise over on the side.

I'm going to recover from today's madness - yes, it's 4 pm and the day can be over now, thanks - and watch Lost. Then I have to pull myself together enought write a few emails expressing my condolences because holy shit, y'all, violence in Nairobi to people I know. Willy just told me what happened and it's really, really bad.

* Ghost Busters (1984)

Today I signed up for a week-long ski trip with the international students, because it would be good for me to be social, and I'll never again have the opportunity for an event that cheap, and because my parents think I should.

Skiing scares the shit out of me, I'll have to say. It's the speed and the thought of falling downhill, like there's a precipice at the end of the hill and I'm just going to fall off. I can ski decently well, but it feels a bit like I'm about to freakin' die of fear.

The fear of speed is a lovely little psychological scar from the time I was riding a particular bastard of a horse ( Read more... ) So that's why the sensation of speed freaks me out, and why I don't quite enjoy skiing. But I've signed up and I'm going to go and hopefully make friends and have people to hang out with for a week somewhere in France. And two days after that, in March, I'm hopping over to Rome again, because I've got to experience Easter Mass with the Pope and all that jazz.


Apart from that, I've skimmed through 420 job placements in the biology section of a search page, eaten cake, watched Nightmare on Elm Street 2 and failed at life.


I was trolling through my old entries yesterday looking for stuff, when I came across the entry for March 21, 2008 and I realized, with horror and disappointment and defeatism, that I'm at the same place as that post. Almost two years later, and I'm in the same fucking corner.
