bending_sickle: (Loki)
Still not dead! *waves* Although I'm apparently being terrible at the whole "posting on LJ" thing lately. Not that a lot is happening. I've been reading a lot of A Song of Ice and Fire (currently on book 4) and fangirling a lot on Thor, The Avengers and all things Loki. (Yes, still.)

I've also bought books because I do what I want and all that. So my life now has a) Ragnarok by A.S. Byatt (which is awesome), b) American Gods by Neil Gaiman (which I read years ago but how could I not own this puppy?!, c) Animal Husbandry by Laura Zigman (which I read back in first year of university, having found it in my residence's Ye Abandoned Books library, and I could've adopted the book but didn't because I don't know, so finding it again in a second-hand bookstore was like finding an old friend), and d) The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (also second-hand, and one I've been meaning to read for ages).

This coming Saturday my folks and I are starting our road trip to Serbia for Ye Sibling's Wedding. I'll be back around July 9th (not that you'll be able to tell I'm gone, as used as y'all probably are to my not posting anything ever). So my floor's littered with clothes and I have half-a-dozen lists in my head. One such list included "get a bigger memory card for the camera" but that's failed because the card I got is 4 GB and apparently my camera is too old to handle that much space and can only deal with up to 2 GB, and they don't sell itty-bitty memory cards anymore so feh.

As for the whole "get a job" thing or the "get a life" thing or even the "get away from here" thing... Yeah. Kinda been putting that all on the back-burner in favour of a "I am going to enter a state of mental hibernation" in which I do nothing. \o/ Anyway. Once I'm back and officially a sister-in-law and everything, I'll be kicking my ass into gear (again).

Look I made fanart!

Also, remember when I accidentally crossovered Thor and Game of Thrones? Seems like my brain decided to hit me with that stick again. So I put The Avenger’s characters into Houses and other such things.

Quotes of the Day: Delirium By Lauren Oliver
You may think the past has something to tell you. You may think that you should listen, should strain to make out its whispers, should bend over backward, stoop down low to hear its voice breathed up from the ground, from the dead places. You may think there's something in it for you, something to understand or make sense of. But I know the truth: I know from the nights of Coldness. I know the pa...st will drag you backward and down, have you snatching at whispers of wind and the gibberish of trees rubbing together, trying to decipher some code, trying to piece together what was broken. It's hopeless. The past is nothing but a weight. It will build inside of you like a stone. Take it from me: If you hear the past speaking to you, feel it tugging at your back and running its fingers up your spine, the best thing to do---the only thing---is run.

*feeble wave* So, not dead yet. Sick with a cold and sunburnt all to hell, making clothes an instrument of torture, but alive. The Cliffnotes of my life are:

  1. the phone interview went terribly and I sucked and it was aweful

  2. consequently I've been unable to do any more jobhunting, meaning I fail at everything

  3. everything is The Avengers and Loki and everything hurts, but it's a better thing than points one and two so yays

  4. speaking of which, I wrote fanfic drabble thingies for The Avengers because I had questions and feelings

  5. I also finally finished a Supernatural fanvid I started sometime in 2009 \o/

  6. I'm also working on putting [livejournal.com profile] seschat and my Sherlock headcanon to [livejournal.com profile] sickle_stories. Part 1 of 18 is up.

  7. so it kinda looks like I'm being productive.

Fanfic: In the Mountains There is the Promise

Summary: What happened between Loki's defeat and his and Thor's departure? (i.e. I had a lot of questions)

Fanvid Title: More Than This

Summary: You have become your father's gun. A study (of sorts) of John Winchester's effect on the boys and the hunter's life. "Is this what you want / what you need / what you wanted me to be?"

There is a certain amount of kindness, just as there is a certain amount of light,' he continued in measured tones. 'We cast a shadow on something wherever we stand, and it is no good moving from place to place to save things; because the shadow always follows. Choose a place where you won't do harm - yes, choose a place where you won't do very much harm, and stand in it for all you are worth, facing the sunshine.

I’m in love with you, and I’m not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I’m in love with you.

I keep writing posts in my head, in detail, about all the events and feelings and musings I want to share or simply need to set down. But then time passes and I get everything together and then there's nothing to say. I've been quite lax in posting as of late - and by that I mean something like the past few months, honestly - and for that, well, sorry. If anything for the out-of-date links. Whatev'. I hope everyone had a good New Year's Eve and Day, and wish y'all the best for 2012. Smile! If we live through the Mayan apocalypse, we get to look forward to the Croatoan virus.

One reason I've not been writing anything is that I've been spending all my time blissfully mellowed out with Tumblr. Another, more acceptable reason, is that there's nothing to say. Which is of course a lie because I could always pull something out about fandom, at the least. But lately I've not been doing much. Well, I've been finishing compilations (see below). But otherwise not really doing much of anything. Today I went out running after weeks of impersonating a hibernating grub and I started looking for plane tickets to go visit my brother, although that's causing all sorts of anxiety because I don't even know. (The looking-for-tickets thing, not visiting-my-brother, mind.) I did go socializing that one time, with my volunteer-work supervisor, which was lovely and wonderful, but it's quite sad to basically be able to point at a month or a string of months, "That's when I hung out with folk." So I've been Tumblring a lot and watching a lot of television and huddling under every warm thing I can find and generally not thinking about much of anything. Except maybe about how I'm still waiting for a Christmas card from [livejournal.com profile] mrscastielftw to arrive - it's somewhere in the between-homes postage ether - and it's getting to be a long, sad wait. It doesn't help that I've been falling asleep at 4 am these past few days.

Even now I'm drawing a blank, just that I really wanted to post because a) it's the new year and I might as well tell y'all I'm not dead and b) Links of the Day. So there you go. Oh, and memes. Now, excuse me, I have some American Horror Story to streamline into my veins.

So I'm still in "yay, it's the holidays!" mode, made especially easy because I'm a whole country away from my life, staying mellow in just south of Barcelona with my aunt and uncle. I've finally finished sprucing up Nanowrimo 2011 and have been thinking a lot about Nanowrimo 2012 (because of course I'm doing it). I think I've got a better grip on it than this year's, although that's mainly because I'm moving the great big plotty things to the background as flashforwards, so hopefully I'll be better able to manage them and not get bogged down with the bits in between. I'm almost done with the omnibus of my short stories too, which is awesome. I just need to work on the covers.

I haven't watched The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King yet, despite this past weekend having been slated for it. I did, though, watch Person of Interest 1x10 and omg. Finally, finally, I cared about the characters, and that incldues the lead ones. I even got a bit wibbley when Reese's day took a nose-dive into no-good, very-bad, and that was only partly because the screen was punching all my kink buttons. And Finch's mini-litle freak out of guilt was wonderful. And continuity! Yes, show, yes. I think I might start to like you now.

Qutes of the Day: [livejournal.com profile] greygirlbeast, here
Sometimes, I feel it's most important that people know and believe the truth – which is passion, but also no small degree of arrogance, to imagine I know such a thing. But other times, I feel it's best they believe whatever comforts them, regardless of my ideas of truth (and fact), so long as they do as little harm as possible. But that's pretty much the whole of the Law, isn't it? (Rhetorical question.)

So I've been feeling like crap today. The only good thing is that unlike yesterday's three-hour walk about town looking for goddamn cards to send to darlings, today I found awesome cards at, hilariously enough, the same bookstore chain I tried two of yesterday and it only took me two hour and most of that was me staring at the cards and trying to figure out if people I hardly know will like them or be offended (although how one can be offended by reindeer, I don't know). Anyway, I got cards and it's awesome. Some even have glitter.

I haven't made much progress on sprucing up Time 3. (Sorry [livejournal.com profile] seschat! I need to write a missing-scene-that-really-ought-not-be-missing and a meme-drabble and then fight with Word's pagination and then edit it for the free proof and and five copies) thing. What the fuck am I going to do with five copies of what is basically half a novel and I'm not even that pleased with it? Or, well, with three copies, 'cause two I know what to do with. But argh. Five. Maybe in a few years I'll throw them all together into an omnibus, or maybe even an anthology of stories and novels, but this year is not that year because shit still needs to be written. Damnit, Time 3, why you not end?! ...maybe I can resolve it in the Time 0 novel I want to write. Like, instead of flashbacks being the tid-bits, flashforwards as the little extras. Oooooh, two birds might have just hit the ground!

Aaand I'm going to go off and watch something wholesome or funny or whatever, because my head, my heart, my gods... Don't quite know what I'll watch, because we're entering that period of "everything's on hiatus!" which is the curse of the holidays. Except Sherlock, which is apparently a few weeks away, and Doctor Who, which is love and coming for Christmas.

As an aside, I can tell I'm getting older because suddenly an average of six hours of sleep a night for the week doesn't kill me (until around 10:30 pm, after which I am dangerously close to the dozing-off range). How so awake, body? (I still pack the hours in on weekends, though.)

Enough ramble. I'm not sure if this or my long-stretches of silence-and-links is better.

Quotes of the Day: 1) [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda, here and 2) Denis Leary
Because even when you grasp the idea that depression is an ailment and not a personal failing... it still feels like a personal failing. You know you're clinically depressed, but you feel like you're just lazy, lonely, hopeless, pathetic. Or sometimes you don't realize you're ill, because those feelings of anxiety and shame and helplessness sneak up on you and feel legitimate, and that's why you don't realize you need help. [...] Because your sadness and fatigue and anxiety feel mild at first, and they seem like rational responses to things going on in your life, and then you end up missing some deadline or not completing some goal or not living up to your own expectations because you're already sad and tired, and then the negativity does seem justified: "I'm not depressed; I'm a loser."

Most people think life sucks, and then you die. Not me. I beg to differ. I think life sucks, then you get cancer, then your dog dies, your wife leaves you, the cancer goes into remission, you get a new dog, you get remarried, you owe ten million dollars in medical bills but you work hard for thirty-five years and you pay it back and then -- one day -- you have a massive stroke, your whole right side is paralyzed, you have to limp along the streets and speak out of the left side of your mouth and drool but you go into rehabilitation and regain the power to walk and the power to talk and then -- one day -- you step off a curb at Sixty-seventh Street, and BANG you get hit by a city bus and then you die. Maybe.

bending_sickle: (Mark is made of awesome)
I'm still in my "watch all the Mark Sheppard things!" mode. I've followed Mark into some amazing new shows - Leverage and White Collar and Battlestar Galactica - and into some watchable ones - Warehouse 13 and Chuck, for example. Then there's Bionic Woman and Middle Man, which I plowed through out of sheer devotion to Mark's minor character. Oh, Mark...

Right now, I'm watching 24 and I almost wish I were watching Middle Man. At least that one was amusing. For one, it doesn't help that this is totally not my style of show. There's no fantasy and no science, so that's me clutching at staws to find something I can invest in. I'm shit out of luck doing that with Mark's character because the first episode he's in, he's hunkered down in a crowd, head in his hands. The second one, he's got tiny scenes of sitting in a car. (Sitting well and lovely, but still.) Right now I'm hanging onto Grey's Anatomy's Teddy and The Lord of the Rings Sam to get me through. That and the awesome character Chloe O'Brian.

But I can handle that, no problem. What I cannot handle is how the male characters are responding to and treating two female characters. Read more... )

Sickle's Random Tid-Bits:
  • I finally watched an episode of Battlestar Galactica, which I've been meaning to watch in full for ages. Obviously it was a Mark Sheppard episode - 3x18, "The Son Also Rises" - and he was basically the reason I watched it. And, it turns out, the only reason I liked it.

Sure, I was jumping smack in the middle of the third season with only a basic knowledge of the whole series' storyline, but I didn't enjoy it because I got lost. And it wasn't because I didn't feel for the characters, because I did, for some, even without knowing their life history. I don't know, I think it was just all the politics and intrigue and all that type of happenings that made me not like it, because I've figured out that that is just not my genre. Thrillers and spies and politics - even if they are in space! - just isn't my thing.

But that said, it really is a good show. Good pacing, good look, excellent writing. And by that I mean I absolutely adored all of Romo Lampkin [Mark Sheppard]'s speeches. His character had a slight Irish lilt to it, which was charming once I actually figured out what accent it was I was hearing - because previous to that I was just all ears going, "What? What accent is that? Where is that from? Is that, what?"

I actually had to extract some of his speeches and made them into MP3s (wanna listen?) because I just loved them so much. Mark, damnit, do audiobooks.

So in sum, I'll be watching more BSG, but only the kind with Mark Sheppard in it, until and if I get hooked on it and want to watch the whole thing.

Oh, and on a completely different not, the president? Couldn't keep her apart from Doctor Who's Sarah Jane Smith in my head. I'm okay with that.

  • The newspaper did an article on prostitution zones in Rome, and so I learned that there are two zones in my neighbourhood. There's seven women right around our place - which doesn't surprise me, as I knew of five and actually walk by their hang-out place which is a little park every day to and from work - and some twenty-one a bit farther away - coincidently, where one night my mother and I were walking and were called at from a car and we knew they'd mistaken us for prostitutes. So that makes almost thirty prostitutes right in my area. Huh.

  • One of my co-workers, who's camping out at a friend's place until he can find one of his own, got robbed. In his apartment. At night. While he was sleeping. Someone ninjaed in through an open second-story window and took his friend's TV, his iPhone and wallet. Apart from being freaked the fuck out over someone being in his house while he's sleeping, he didn't have a dime on him. He went to his folk's for the weekend, to recover a bit until he could move in to his new place. The worst thing? This is totally not an unheard of or even uncommon thing in Rome.

  • I just realized today that it's going to be ten years since I graduated from highschool and started university, and I've got a friend who's at that stage right now. (The best thing? We're both like, "What age difference?") Ah, squishy ♥ And since it's that season, there's a few Tumblr things about starting university which mean a lot because I can remeber it all happening, and because I'm seeing it happening to my squishy. So this.

  • I'm slowly getting the hang of socializing-through-coffee. Last week I had coffee with my supervisor's peer - the hierarchy details, they fail me - which was nice, and today I had coffee with someone I'd sent my CV a while back and we talked about other organizations that might be interesting, which was also nice.

  • Socializing-through-lunch seems to be a big thing, too. Last week I was pretty awesome at having lunch with people, and it's how I met a guy who thinks techno is the highest form of music ever made by man, which, okay, and how I learned that the cute I like talking to is nineteen which, um, ah. *backs away slowly*

  • I also had lunch with my supervisor, which was less of a socializing thing and more of an info-dump accompanied with my panicked internal monologue going, "I have no idea what you're talking about. You want me to do what? Do you want me to do that? Wait, what, that too? But the other thing, that is being done by someone else? But I'm going to do- WHAT IS GOING ON?!?" so that was intimidating.

I swear I spend every waking moment on Tumblr anymore. It's like watching CNN, except for fandom. You get the updates AS THINGS HAPPEN. And with pictures and video. It's INSANE. And ADDICTIVE.

I still haven't even peeked at my flist or other Tumblrs save for Eastcollins', 'cause I was trying to catch up on the lost week of "omg soulfisting's gone!", so have some links before my WordPad explodes.

In other news, I had lunch with the intern and volunteer group today \o/ I also walked over 4 hours straight this afternoon, going at a crazy pace - listening to "Marching On" all the while - and bought sandals. And now my knees ache like they're being crushed under a sofa bearing a hippo and a rhino going at it. Yays.

So again, not dead. Also, curiously enough, not exhausted. But work doesn't leave me much time for posting and surfing and Links of the Day, which is why sometimes this past week I've looked at the bed and said, "Ah, screw it, let's sleep." (Or rewatch Doctor Who Season 5, and sputter about things we still don't know about River - what did the Bishop in Time of Angels mean? - or about the finale - why 26/06/2010?)

However, I can report back that work is going well. So far it's still a lot of reading - although now they've brought down and hooked up my computer in my new shared office, so yay typing and oncoming productivity! I attended some presentations last week, and had an informal lunch meeting, and have a meeting tomorrow (where I think I'm supposed to introduce myself to the larger team). I've met more people than I could possibly ever remember and they've all been nice. Ah, international environment, how I've missed you! I've walked miles going from one part of the building to the other, getting lost in corridors and on staircases. I swear it's a bloody TARDIS-baby.

Last week I kept getting home absolutely exhausted - all read-out and socialized-out and languaged-out. Also, curisouly, with a raving desire for creativity. I've worked on that Not What I Had In My Head drawing (and worked on it so much it went from decent-enough to shite and back again) and have discovered The Coloured Pencils as well as the Badly Mangled Watercolours from my childhood. I also have charcoal pencils, so at least one version of the drawing is going to be passable. I even took Betsy out for a bit - didn't play her or even tuner her up, but I did wipe the dirt of her poor little guitar body.

In other news, have some links. Lots and lots of links.

Can I please have dibs on "Big Gay Angel Crisis" as a band name? We'll sing songs about Supernatural fandom, it will be wonderful.
