bending_sickle: (Invisible?)
So again, not dead. Also, curiously enough, not exhausted. But work doesn't leave me much time for posting and surfing and Links of the Day, which is why sometimes this past week I've looked at the bed and said, "Ah, screw it, let's sleep." (Or rewatch Doctor Who Season 5, and sputter about things we still don't know about River - what did the Bishop in Time of Angels mean? - or about the finale - why 26/06/2010?)

However, I can report back that work is going well. So far it's still a lot of reading - although now they've brought down and hooked up my computer in my new shared office, so yay typing and oncoming productivity! I attended some presentations last week, and had an informal lunch meeting, and have a meeting tomorrow (where I think I'm supposed to introduce myself to the larger team). I've met more people than I could possibly ever remember and they've all been nice. Ah, international environment, how I've missed you! I've walked miles going from one part of the building to the other, getting lost in corridors and on staircases. I swear it's a bloody TARDIS-baby.

Last week I kept getting home absolutely exhausted - all read-out and socialized-out and languaged-out. Also, curisouly, with a raving desire for creativity. I've worked on that Not What I Had In My Head drawing (and worked on it so much it went from decent-enough to shite and back again) and have discovered The Coloured Pencils as well as the Badly Mangled Watercolours from my childhood. I also have charcoal pencils, so at least one version of the drawing is going to be passable. I even took Betsy out for a bit - didn't play her or even tuner her up, but I did wipe the dirt of her poor little guitar body.

In other news, have some links. Lots and lots of links.

Just a quick note to say that a) I ain't dead (yet) although b) I'm mentally exhausted, what with i) workworkwork, ii) socializing zomg, iii) multiple language use. Seriously, on Monday? I got home and just collapsed on the floor for a few hours in a mental coma.

So far, so good, though. Sure, I'm not into the complicated work part of it yet - mainly reading - but at least the mind-numbing fear is gone. Monstly.

Remember how - if you waded through my sea of Tumblr links - there were some links about how there'd been some sort of plot against Misha Collins and fandom instantly went full-on GRR ARGH MAMA BEAR? And remember how I couldn't find out what the plot had been?

Yeah. It was this. Seriously, that is just mean. Are alright, "mean" doesn't even begin to cover what this is, but I'd probably burn through my keyboard if I tried to write all applicable words down. And I'd probably have an aneurism coming up with them all. I'm just sitting here shaking my head in horror and shame and disgust and THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH ADJECTIVES TO DESCRIBE HOW I FEEL, OKAY?!?

Also, I made Fanart. Well, picspams. And macros. And "MUST. EXPRESS. FEELINGS." fanart-picspam-quote-meta-man-ape-gone-wrong thing. There's Supernatural, Doctor Who, Stonehenge Apocalypse and Firefly, some of them all mixed up like a Turkey stuffing. Read more... )

There are some things about DVD bundles that make me wish I had a) money to burn and b) access to ways I could burn that money to get shiny things. Some episodes in Supernatural, for example, make me yearn for a chance to listen to commentaries.

Unfortunately, apart from [livejournal.com profile] tracy_loo_who's detailed flailings, I haven't been able to find anything on Kripke, Singer and Edlund's The End commentary. I've googled and tag-haunted until my fingers fell off, and nothing. I'm this close to contacting [livejournal.com profile] stir_of_echoes, who was fantastic enough to transcribe the commentary for What is and What Should Never Be but I'm scared of coming off as crazy or demanding or whatnot. So can anyone offer any help on that?

You know what else is bothering me by being all "na na!" non-attainable? (No, it isn't any of the boys of Supernatural, because there has to be at least the illusion of attainability for there to be cause for the "na na!" dance.) It's this podbook and its MP3. I've downloaded both of them, but I can't get them to open. Winzip keeps saying "cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive" and WinRAR says "the archive is either in unknown format or damaged". Now, I've downloaded both files a number of times, so I know they're getting in alright, so I don't know. Is this happening to anyone else? I'd just like to check before I go all "waaah, I cannae get podbook!" to the audiofic archive.

...I'm wondering whether there's any community where I could pimp out my Devour picspam review. Just because it took so much time to put together... Must investigate further.

There is an unfair stigma attached to loneliness, I think. It makes people feel bad for you, but at the same time admitting to those feelings makes you look needy, like you’re asking to be saved from yourself. Admitting to being lonely seems like a surefire way to stay that way.

Dean Winchester, Supernatural
bending_sickle: (Penguin Love)
It's dad's birthday today, so it's booze and gluttony day! It'll be my birthday on Sunday, and we will undoubtably also revel in food and drink.

I will not, however, revel in Supernatural. "What kind of fuckery is this?" you might say. Well, my parents and I are taking a long weekend off to drive south and be tourists. We'll leave Friday afternoon and be back on Monday afternoon.

What does that mean? It means 1) spoil me and die, 2) squee with me about the premiere come Tuesday or so, yes? [livejournal.com profile] seschat, we can has comment thread?

In other news, I might just have fallen in love with one of the local stray cats of our neighbourhood. Y'all might remember Greebo, the one-eyed, canine-lacking, white-and-grey, affectionate stray that hangs around my apartment building meowing, "Pet me! Pet me!"

Well, he was there today, meowing hello, and I dutifully petted and scritched and rubbed to the soundtrack of delighted purring. Then I walked off to take the metro and my heart promptly melted because Greebo followed me, trotting behind and around and in front. It's so heartwarming to have a little furry thing walk beside you ♥ He followed me for over half a block, then sat down and watched me go. Oh, Greebo, if I had a home and money, I'd take you in right quick.

This afternoon, when I got back home, there he was, splayed out in a doze. The petting was resumed, now with belly rub! And at one point I was scratching his neck and chest and Greebo just lay in blissed-out stillness. ♥ so much.

Meme via [livejournal.com profile] lienne: It's that five questions thing again. Shout the name of a fruit at me—seriously: "Leave a comment saying "ORANGES" (or any other fruit of your choice)"—I'll ask you five questions, you post your answers, other people shout fruits at you, the cycle continues.

1. the hell is a kumquat anyway - A kumquat is a hilarious word which is exceedingly fun to say. Oh, and a fruit, as per the meme's specs. I think I've had some before. Really, I just confused it with the satsuma, which isn't really as exotic as the name seems to imply, being somewhat of glorified mandarin (or, more amusingly, a "citrus mutant" according to Wiki) because I wanted to be all witty and amusing and sly by referencing the fruit the Tenth Doctor had in his pocket in his first episode, which was the first time I'd heard of that fruit and was sorely disappointed to see it wasn't anything special.

2. what do you think of this journal It's a very nice!

3. has anyone ever sent you a dirty postcard Unfortunately, no. Or maybe fortunately, because I don't want my parents to get the mail and end up with 0.0 eyes.

4. I don't mean like it had naughty words written on it or was smudged with grime, I mean like the picture on the postcard was pornographic. yes I just looked over at my stack of old mail to come up with that question Nope, not in any of those senses. I guess the closest I ever came was when [livejournal.com profile] chaosvizier didn't send me the Kenyan postcard of massive zebra schlong. (Scroll down.) Oh, what could have been.

5. I'm going to give up now Which means that I can both complete the meme and give up in a wonderfully paradoxical state of affairs! :D

** Apparently I'm not allowed to say "I'm tired" because I'm always saying this. Well excuse me if working on a case anaylsis for 5 hours straight - eating my lunch 'fore the 'puter - and then discussing it for 2 hours and then taking a 30 minute break before a grueling while of Abdominal Training followed by Ye Grocery Shopping and Ye Feeding and Hygiene ritual brings us to 11 pm leaves me tired. Current events in the life of the Sickle:

1) I'm sick. This sucketh muchly. Yesterday, it felt like I had a squirming amphibian flopping around in my throat. Last night, I must've won the Rolling-In-Bed Marathon - I doubt I slept. And today, finally, it's the joy of an achey head, off body temperature and swallowing of the ever-present wire cotton ball in my throat. Yays.

2) I've printed and bound 6 copies of my paper, which let me tell you, massive amounts of paper. They're all nicely bound - by moi - and left on the desks of appropriate people. The librarian, Edith, is an absolute darling, teaching me how to use the binding machine ("This is the lever, these are the slots, and now you just put the paper into the spiral.") and how many hard copies I actually need to make, and who needs them. Lovely lady.

3) Talked to Mamaji and Brother yesterday, and got only positive response over the possible internship in Amboselia NP. So I think it's a go, then. I'll email the prof - I have a meeting mid-July, but might as well. And then, sooner than I care to think - but still far off in the future - you'll be looking forward to a 3-4 month absence from yours truly as I galavant around the African savanna after radio-collared lions. Ah, good times.

3b: Getting hung-up-on isn't cool. )

4) Watching Spain/Russia tonight with Elisa. Whoot!

5) Got 875 words down of The Balloonist's Wife and the muse still ain't dead! Double-whoot!
ETA: Volunteers for a beta? Anyone?

6) Internet at home is un-cooperative. No whoot whatsoever.

I have a little peeve running about today. On a whim, and because Mom gives me a load of makeup gift samples, I decided to try my hand at eyeshadow. Nothing too drastic, just a shade darker and one lighter than my own skin, very natural-like. I added this to my usual mascara, and decided, hell, might as well put on some blush and a bit of lipgloss. No biggie, right? There I am, very neutral and natural makeup and summer dress. Nothing to gossip about.

Well, apparently it was a big deal, to my roommate, at least. She was all, "Oh, you're so dressed up!" (Summer dress = dressed up = wtf?) "And the makeup!" Yeah, well, just trying something out... "But you don't need it. You look fine without it."

And that's when the peeve was born. I don't wear make-up because I need it. Read more... )

My highlight of the day? Lost mobisode 11, because Jin was hilarious. Even though if I thought about it seriously I could invariably get incredibly miserable because damn, that's one tough cookie. Oh, but I laughed and laughed and it was shiny to do so.

Speaking of, apart from my geektastic idea for a cake platter decoration ("So my choice is, "Or death?"), I've now decided that, should I ever have a cookie jar, it'll have two quotes, one on either side. One would say, "i can haz cookie," the other, "i made u a cookie, but i eated it" My awesome, you may bask in it.

So obviously, I'm kinda-sorta studying for my godawful exam tomorrow. I may have explained this already, but...well, suffer. This exam is for level 3 and gives you an "elemental cycle" diploma. If you don't pass level 3, you don't get the level 4 diploma even though you've passed level 4.

Which is why I'm doing grammar multiple choice and memorizing, "veuillez, agreer, Monsieur/Madame, l'expression de mes salutations les plus cordiales". Because the french are anal when it comes to correct letter-writing style.

Egads.

On the bright side, awaiting an invitation to the mysterious community I was asking about in the last post. Here is the thread over at Fireflyfans.

I have been warned to bring a towel, on account of al the pretty pictures. :D

Kinda like these. It should be wrong for a man of the cloth to be that hot. It alright if I like the wrong stuff?. Btw, he totally kicks James Marster's butt in the hot-priest section. Even as an evil priest. Evil priest with a knife, no less.

Aw maaaaan. Just read the transcript for "Dirty Girls" (Buffy 7x18) and am so itching to watch it. Caleb seems delightfully chipper-and-evil. Why do I not have access to this?

On a similar note, I miss the days of suprnova.org, a wonderful BitTorrent site. I have yet to find a replacement.

PS: I've had this LJ for over a year now. Coo'.

Since very little in real life has happened since I last wrote (which includes CV work) I'm just going to massively abuse the internet void and impose my ridiculous and pointless fic onto the world.

But first, here are some message boards I haunt (or try to anyway). At Buffyworld you can find transcripts and screencaps of the episodes for both BtVS and Ats, as well as goodies like a fan-written Season 8 (with trailor and fan art) in the forum where I post (albeit rarely) as MereMortal. At the Darth Maul Estrogen Brigade 2 (at http://www.dmeb2.org/), continuating from the closed but online first edition there's character and actor info, fics, very pretty artwork, screencaps and a forum, where I lurk and rarely post as Black Aliss. It seems to me that there's a really tight-knit group there, especially with their annual dinner. Then there's the L Space for Terry Pratchett fans, including quotes, explanations of the references and jokes in the books (highly recomended and a whole educational experience), which also has a message board here.

The following is the above-mentioned pointless fic, which is a comedy revolving around an inept Hero and Villain, with a DiD (Damsel in Distress) to fight over, with the use of their mail-order manuals. Includes cameos of lecherous doors, evil butlers, frightened boogeymen and a camel. But not all in this first chapter.

Warning: this might actually not be entertaining at all, or good by any standards. Read at your own risk.

PS: Flames will not be coddled. Constructive criticism will be given tea. Praise will be given (censored).
