I'm still in my "watch all the Mark Sheppard things!" mode. I've followed Mark into some amazing new shows - Leverage and White Collar and Battlestar Galactica - and into some watchable ones - Warehouse 13 and Chuck, for example. Then there's Bionic Woman and Middle Man, which I plowed through out of sheer devotion to Mark's minor character. Oh, Mark...



Right now, I'm watching 24 and I almost wish I were watching Middle Man. At least that one was amusing. For one, it doesn't help that this is totally not my style of show. There's no fantasy and no science, so that's me clutching at staws to find something I can invest in. I'm shit out of luck doing that with Mark's character because the first episode he's in, he's hunkered down in a crowd, head in his hands. The second one, he's got tiny scenes of sitting in a car. (Sitting well and lovely, but still.) Right now I'm hanging onto Grey's Anatomy's Teddy and The Lord of the Rings Sam to get me through. That and the awesome character Chloe O'Brian.

But I can handle that, no problem. What I cannot handle is how the male characters are responding to and treating two female characters.

• The First Lady has, apparently, a history of some mental imbalance and is on medication. She has also discovered a nefarious treacherous plot and, after some rooting about, managed to get evidence supporting the conspiracy theory she's got going. She talks to the President, who brushes her off because he's got more important things to do. She tries again, and her husband starts wondering whether she's gone off the deep end. He keeps trying to talk her down and disregarding her distress and desperation in telling him Truly Epic Shit.
  
  
  
  Then the First Lady gets chloroformed and the damning document is stolen. Only the President thinks she's just collapsed and maybe it was her medication and no one stops to think that maybe the reason she's been unconscious and is now woozy is because she was drugged. So the President decides to have her committed because obviously she's gone crazy and gods forbid the media finds out.
  
  


• This second case is much shorter, but also made me pull a few of Sterling's "gods I'm trapped in a faulty elevator" faces. Here, Chloe had a one-night stand with Man, whom she supervises at work. Everything's a bit awkward later on, but Chloe's fantastically professional and work-focused. Man, it turns out, is doing some very bad things in a high-security environment, of the "sneaking about looking at files he shouldn't" and "spying on people who are under protection". Chloe figures this out, tells her boss, and Man is taken in for questioning. Man then proceeds to defend himself and discredit Chloe by saying that obviously she's emotionally distressed by their failed relationship thing, and she's taking it out on him.
