bending_sickle: (Can't we just cuddle?)
Sickle's Brief Review of The Crazies:
  • I loved this movie. Loved loved loved it. It had heart, it had gore, it had the real sort of horror and the movie horror, it had action, and it flowed. Also, what's not to love about what is basically a zombie movie?

  • What I mean about the "real sort of horror" is that there's a lot of scenes - and implied scenes - of people doing absolutely horrific things. Spoilers )

  • That said, the "movie horror" is very well done too. The scares and traps and jumps are good, and the slight paranoia that starts halfway through is a nice touch, although it never really takes flight. The deaths are good and showy, the gore is bloody (and at one point a bit too gorey for my tastes - mild spoiler )). Most characters didn't to ridiculously stupid endangerment things, and I actually cared about them, even if just because they'd managed to not die by the slimmest of margins.

  • There's a few snags in the backdrop storyline spoilers )

Day 18: I bought a Kinder Surprise egg and had a nice chat on the trip home from German with Girl Who's Name I Can't Remember and Obviously Can't Ask Now, who is rapidly becoming the nearest thing to a friend my age in this city that I have. It's strange, and been a while, but also nice because we get along and there's banter and mutual encouragement.

Yesterday was my meeting with my supervisor. For the first time since I've started writing this thesis, I didn't feel like I'd gone through the "Grr! You suck!" grinder and didn't feel like crying. In truth, it went pretty well. Sure, the only thing he had to say was thing's I ought to fix or add too (there's always something more to add), but at least he was thoroughly impressed with my list of identified lions for Ambogga's pride and understood that a) this took aaaages and b) was necessary for one third of my results.

I did, as in every meeting, have to tell him that two lionesses are no longer in the same pride. I know he's busy, but come on, we've discussed this every meeting and it was in my emails and field report when I was in Kenya. For the love of cuddly things! why is he always surprised when I tell him they're in two groups?!?

He also told me something which needs a bit of who's-who for y'all to understand without me doing horribly convoluted run-on sentences. *re-reads* Like that one. Anyway, so this project has a couple of counterparts in Kenya, both in the Kenya Wildlife Services. One's going to be the PhD student who's going to tangle with all this research we're doing to make some sense out of it. Supervisor and Future-PhD, along with others, were involved in re-collaring the lions this summer. They also collared a new lioness (which I hope to gods I can identify, 'cause that'd be awesome).

Future-PhD's decided to name the lioness "Willemijn" which is a) Supervisor's daughter's name (the same daughter I went to Kenya to do research with), b) demonstrably unpronounceable by all Kenyans we ever met (Willy-muh-jeen, or Willy-muh-jin were the closest tries, when it's Will-uh-mine), c) in bad taste (as in, giving a lion a Dutch name, nevermind that it's a researcher's). Supervisor was displeased with the choice name due to reason c, but understands Future-PhD's logic in the political sense by using reason a. I'm peeved over all three reasons, frankly, but mainly c. Although I must admit I felt a pang of disappointment and confusion because, as even my Supervisor says (not that I raised this issue at all), between the two of us, I deserve to have a lion named after me more than Willy (what with being the lion researcher and all). I'm not saying I'd like a lion named after me (gods no), just that, if you take out the "daughter of" part, (twisted) logic says it ought to have been my name there.

Anyway, the rest of the work that day went well. Except, of course, for the last part at 5:20 pm where I did a final save of a lion's ID sheet, ready to end for the day, and the computer threw up errors all over the place. Some error boxes and an unsolicited re-start later, I could not find a single mother-lovin' trace of my ID sheet. This ID sheet represented the main body of work for the entire day, so you'll understand why my hand was glued to my mouth and I made high-pitched whimpering sounds. Eventually, an hour later, I found a temporary file that had most of my work on it. But seriously! this computer's going to kill me (and delete my entire work). I wasn't even saving to the computer anyway, but to my USB. Argh.

This whole mess meant my nerves were screaming bloody murder and I only had half an hour between getting home and going swimming. Whilst biking to the pool, I moved from "strict right" to "slightly in the middle" to avoid a pothole, heard a motorbike beep behind me, moved back to the right and saw the motorbike pass me. The woman sitting behind the driver turned around and yelled at me (ah, how I loved at times not really understanding Dutch). She seemed quite infuriated and was probably yelling insults galore. All I know is that she gestured at my headphones, as if to say, "What the fuck, you dumb fuck with your headphones, you deaf?!?" It really upset me because I'm a good biker (signaling, keeping to my side and waiting at pedestrian crossings in a country where bikers feel they have the right of way on the sidewalk as much as anywhere else, for example) and had done nothing wrong or dangerous (unless, of course, they were being utter morons and trying to pass a bike at ridiculous speeds). Fuck, the number of times I've almost crashed because the person I was trying to pass just decided to do a little s-shaped wobble! Right, so that was upsetting, particularly because I was already upset. So the day ended nicely.

Oh, wait, it ended with a talk with mom. That went generally well except where we disagreed over what "urgently" meant. She said I had to start sending out CVs urgently and I disagreed, because I don't know when I might finish this thesis and have yet to research where I could send the CVs to. So for me, it's not urgent in the "drop everything right the fuck now and do this shit!" sense of the word. And for my mom, "It's not urgent" translated to "I'm never going to even try to get a job, lalala."

Today I've worked 6.5 hours straight and had lunch at 5:30 pm. My neck's killing me. I had one (1) oreo cookie as consolation. I have, however, basically finished identifying and analysing one whole pride. \o/ Still a few holes, but I'm ready to move on to another one. I also have to write a report about my internship to the International Office lady (the one who thought I was going to be raped and murdered in Kenya, remember her?). I'd meant to do that now, but instead wrote this. What the hell, I'm tired. Also, no running or swimming today (and definately no Einstein's), so I'm going to chill.

Wowza, I've been social this week! Read more... )

I've got socks and a bathrobe on whilst in bed, so you can say it's getting a mite cold. But! I've rented White Noise 2: The Light because a) Saturday-night horror movie tradition and b) Nathan Fillion. I noticed the rental place has Carrie and The Exorcist, so that's the next two weeks covered.

So things are looking quite bright lately, despite the office computer still occasionally eating my work and my upcoming meeting on Tuesday with my supervisor. This week I went running 9in the damn rain) and swimming and my eating habits are still wonderfully under control (except today) so the scale is being progressively nicer to me. I also watched The Hangover (meh) and District 9 (too short clips for too long a documentary stint, amusing South African accents, crazy Nigerians, awesome aliens, oh good gods solidiers are horrible, how the hell do people understand the aliens, sweaty and desperate desk folk on the run are sorta sexy and, aww, itty bitty alien).

My Links of the Day Week list is huuuuge so I'm just going to leave that for slow work days. (Also, my computer's being an ass with the internet, saying it can't open the page sometimes, despite playing YouTube or opening pages on another tab just fine.)

Edit: Except I can't now because I never learn not to do Copy text B when I just Cut text A and haven't Pasted text A yet somewheres safe. *curses* I'll get most of them back.

* Demon, The Exorcist (1973)**
** I need to watch this as well. Damnit.
bending_sickle: (Diversion)
Today I woke up a tad late, but thoroughly enjoyed my morning. I'm totally hooked reading The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson, which is awesome, so I did a lot of that. I went off to the market for fruit, of which there was a paltry selection, and bought way more curry sauces at the Asian store Toko than I can shake vegetables at.

Dropping my stuff off, I hightailed (walking, not biking, for a change) it to one of the public pools in town so that I a) had something to do b) exercised and c) could ask them once and for all to explain their highly complicated hour-system. Turns out with the student gym card I can go for free Tuesday and Friday evenings for a single hour, so Wednesdays (2:00-3:30). Bizare schedules, but good enough. I think there's a pool (also operated by these people, or at least their email ending is the same) closer to my biology building, so I'll email them about schedules and stuff. (Maybe it's just their office, or the actual gym complex, though.)

I also finally wandered down to the video rental place and became a member. The main reason (or at least what got me off my arse) was that I want to watch The Exorcism of Emily Rose (I'm on a big horror movie thing right now). I couldn't find it, because the store has no concept of the alphabetical order, or even of the genre categories. (Eddie Murphey's Vampire in Brooklyn, for example, was in Horor, whilst White Noise was in Thriller, leaving White Noise 2 (Nathan Fillion!) all alone in the Horror section.)

So instead I rented SKing's Desperation, of which I've read the book. As with many horror/thriller books, I found the beginning good, but was sorely disappointed by the explanation/climax part. King's Cell is highly guilty of this crime (Levitating?!? Really?), as are many of Koontz's** (Of course it was the Russians.) I happen to enjoy Koontz regardless, having read quite a few (although for gods' sake, I'm tired of the same ol' type of characters!). King I can say less on, having only read four of his books (My favorite? The Eye of the Dragon, hands down.) and a collection of short stories (The Night Shift, which proved unforgettable***, awesome, and a surprisingly good beach book). I've only watched one**** King movie (The Shining, meh), but want to watch Cujo and Carrie. As for Koontz, I need to watch Hideaway. Why? Two words: Jeff Goldblum.

So I'm off to watch Desperation. I remember some gory bits, some plot-point objects, but not much else, so hopefully it'll be a good run. Plus, it's from 2006 and was nominated for two Primetime Emmys, which means a) no 1990's style gore effects and b) it was pretty good (for TV, at least). I don't recognize any names, which could be a good or bad sign. (Also, there's absolutely no one home. Wish me luck!)

ETA: Y'all are more than welcome to share you favorite horror novels or movies, or wax eloquent (or disdainfully) on King or Koontz.

ETA 2: My night-table lamp just died. Crud. *glares* Excellent timing, lamp. *points at horror movie* Most excellent indeed.

Today's been chock-a-block** full of events.

1) I finally went to Madurodam (knee-high replicas of neighbourhoods and important buildings of the Netherlands). The last time I'd been there I was aged between 1 and 2. I'v always loved the photo of my brother and myself towering over defenseless buildings. So I was really keen on going back***. I obviously didn't recognize anything from the photo, but I did recognize various landmarks and buildings from having actually been there. I took a gazillion photos.

2) I walked to Scheveningen (the actual beach) from Madurodam and walked along the beach listening to Richard and Door searching for the Angelus (I ♥ Gaiman's reading-aloud-skills) under the rain that hasn't let up from last night and, after wandering about the indoor promenade, went back downtown.

3) I watched The Incredible Hulk. Now, if you'd asked me yesterday whether I'd ever want to watch this, I'd've said no. But non-dubbed Kung Fu Panda wasn't on for two hours and nothing else struck my fancy. Besides, I thought, [livejournal.com profile] lienne liked it. I took a closer look at the poster. And it has Ed Norton and Tim Roth. Now I have to watch it.

You see, there's some actors that are on my "I could totally be convinced to watch this just 'cause he's in it" list. In other words, it's a list of actors I enjoy simply watching act. The list, an excerpt. )

So, how's about we talk a bit about Hulk? A sort of running-commentary, except after the fact. Spoilarz, obviously. )

Also? X-Files trailer didn't sell me but I don't care. I is watching because zomg it's X-Files.

I also firmly believe that every movie should have a post-credits Easter Egg clip.

***It's a bit surreal going to places you know you've been, even places you've lived in, and not remember. I wonder what'd it'd be like if I went back to Mexico, or Costa Rica, and see our old house and my old schools. I've done just that for my life in Montreal, and it hurt a bit, because things change and the reality of this violates your memories. It's hard to cling to the memory of a place when you see that it doesn't exist quite that way now.
^ For two reasons: a) Jack Nicholson, while amazing, creeps me out more than a little, and b) the film's a chipper-version rip-off of Knocking on Heaven's Door, which was awesome.

...but finding someone in your garden at three o'clock in the morning with a meat cleaver and a hard-on can't be much fun.

I am sick to my heart of sitting down and typing away about African wild dogs. Am not really done, but it's so, so close. (Ignoring all the editing and some slight gap-filling, that is.) Was going to go out earlier, but the Netherlands decided to spit on that plan. Food's becoming an issue.

Dad's plane's 4 hours delayed and he's not even on it yet. This may mean a) I won't get to see him tomorrow and/or b) he'll miss his connecting flight. Am actually looking forward to seeing Dad. Bizarre. Maybe I'm just better with my parents over the phone?

Oh, and for the record, according to Ma, when in one of her moods, I am a) hysterical**, b) have a serious behavioural problem and c) know didley-squat about Dutch. Why, cheers, Ma. Also for the record, while pleased to see Ma when she was here, never really squeed over it. I've just rewatched T: TSCC 1x06 (aka. the Bad Science Episode). Alright, so Derek isn't AB+, he's AB-, and it's apparently actually yep, rare in the USA, according to Wiki, at 0.6% of the population. My point still stands and the stupid remains: there's major Science Abuse going on in that blood transfusion bit. (And by the by, blood transfusions have to take in a whole lot of stuff into account other than the letters.). Actually, it's bothering me so much - not so much the "Oh noes, he needs his own blood type" as the "AB- son of an O- mother" whahooey - that I'm sorely tempted to whine about it on a thread. Blargh.

Guess what though? I'm feeling incredibly awesome right now because I finally placed the face of Random Army Dud in that episode as Peter Mensah, aka that messenger who gets kicked into a Spartan well in 300. I had to go through an oodleplex of mental files, jumping from "Ooh, I'm getting Xerxes vibes" to "That's not the Candyman, is it?" and then off to "Machete-wielding bastard in Blood Diamond?" before the thunderclap of "D'oh!" (Lena Headey was also in 300 as Queen Whatsit, which sort of makes me want to see if these fandoms can bleed together, but there just isn't enough crack for that in this world.)

Now, I'm in the mood to tear this episode's concepts to pieces by the careful aplication of logic, and hope you'll indulge me. Minor spoilers, major complaints, some Science Stick beatings. )

One thing bothered me: spoilarz? )

I realized a few things, the most inconsquential of which is that the music supervisor was Nick Angel. This is only relevant because he was also the music supervisor for Hot Fuzz, which in turn is only relevant because the main character of that film is called Nicholas Angel.

Also, I googeld a bit and realized why Yvonne (Jessica Hynes) looked so familiar: Dr Who: The Family of Blood, Human Nature. The fandoms bleed!

One other thing I realized is just why I like this film, and Hot Fuzz, so much: it's not a single genre. Cut for rambling. )

Thirdly, I realized that I have a very strange lust-button. Seriously. Apparently, I like my characters to be dusty and broken and with the emotional turmoil of a blender on a high setting^^. And lanky. And angry.

[livejournal.com profile] ironychan's Concerning monsters post, including Gojira and Cloverfield.
[livejournal.com profile] ursulav's Today's Awesomely Weird Science Tidbit!, summarized as: "Basically a teenager gets a liver transplant, and a year later it turns out that her bloodtype has changed to match the liver, and weirder yet, stem cells from the liver had penetrated her bone marrow and she now has a donor immune system. Amazing! Freaky! Probably not replicable, but god, if only!" The comments kind of take off the novelty shine of this, but hey! awesome!
