bending_sickle: (Angst!)
[personal profile] bending_sickle
Today, I went out for a walk in the afternoon in the hopes of "raising my spirits" and "clearing my head" and all that other stuff walks are supposed to do, and instead got rained on for the most part, stood under a tiny overhang from a shop while two couples at two different points started arguing bitterly and loudly and that's why I wanted out of the house, universe! and waited for a bus which would not come because it doesn't run Sundays, until I took another one which took me sort of home. Remind me never to take an evening constitutional ever again.

Dad's got Dupuytren's contracture (or, more awesomely, "Viking disease"), which is where "the tough connective tissue within one's hand becomes abnormally thick which can cause the fingers to curl and can result in impaired function of the fingers, especially the small and ring fingers." He's looking into treatment and surgery options.

Now, there's no real known cause for this disease, although there's a lot of finger pointing, particularly at "trauma, diabetes, alcoholism, epilepsy therapy with phenytoin and liver disease." But the interesting thing is that 60-70% of those afflicted have a genetic predisposition to D's c. You know what this means, right? I am totally losing at the Genetic Roulette here.
  • I'm near-sighted and have had three retinal tears.

  • My maternal grandmother died of colon cancer.

  • My mother has tachycardia.

  • There's adult diabetes on my dad's side.

  • There's anxiety and depression disorders in very close relatives.

On the plus or curious side: I've got photic sneeze (which studies show is more likely acquired than inherited); I think I've got the Hitchhiker's thumb, except it doesn't go all the way to 90 degrees, but it does look like this; and I can roll my tongue and bend it too. These genetic quirks don't seem to compensate, though.

Supernatural 6x14, Manequin 3: The Reckoning:
  • Wait, wait... That was just a crack in the wall? And seeing through the crack didn't tear it down? Isn't that like a thousand times worse than scratching at the wall? How is Sam okay?!? (I'm glad he is, but come on.)

  • IT'S SYLAR, bitches!

  • ...now I really want a Disection iPod app.

  • You say possessed dolls, I say autons. The Doctor needs to run into the Winchesters. I'm sure there'd be a lot of prodding and staring and "my, you fascinating thing, you" with some good ol' "oooh" and "aaah" thrown in ;)

  • I'll admit I cheered when Ben pulled the, "You're abandoning your family" card, even though it's incredibly manipulative and a so uncalled-for guilt trip. So why the cheer? Because Dean was a part of their family and that means he can't drop them like they're hot. (Also, dude, you know that card's Dean's weakness. If you get him to see things from that angle, that they're his family too, well then...at least he'll call once in a while.)

  • But by no means can he move in with them again. I get that what you want and what you can do are two different things, but I wouldn't like it if he turned around and was all, "I care not for thee! Talk to the hand. Imma go slay some monsters now, kthnx bai." When Dean needed some pushing to get into the Impala and drive over to Lisa's, I was annoyed with him, because people he cared about were asking for his help, and you can't just leave that.

  • That said, Ben was way out of line and manipulative and damn it, kid, you cannot force people back together. So you watch TV and know what "the third date" means - which, okay, I'm a) squicked out that you're thinking about your mom having sex, and b) it's not like sex is the crazy glue of relationships, and that once it's done, Lisa's going to be head-over-heels and Ben's going to have a new daddy (that only happens if he's a Winchester). Come on, a little more credit for the womenfolk, yes? Ben, with your mass amounts of TV-knowledge, can you tell me what happens when parents divorce? The Parent Trap and other Disney feel-good movies with meddlesome kids notwithstanding?

  • "Son of a biiiiitch!" I love Dean and how much he loves his car. Also, this was a wonderful shout-out to 1x01's possessed-car-chase scene.

  • Why was I not trusting Sam? What were those untrusty feelings in me, Sam?!? I thought I wasn't going to feel like this once he was resouled, but damn, something felt off. Maybe it was his, "Ooh, jeez, that snapshot of hell wasn't cool," aura, or how honestly mean he was to some people (douchbags notwithstanding), but that mention of Lucifer being out of Sam, and him being resouled, made me shiver in a bad way.

  • Where's Cas and the other half of this season's plot? *grabby hands*

***** Put this one up on Sendspace because Mediafire was being contrary. My guess is it's similar to Vol. 1.

Oh hey, we have that Viking disease thing in my family too, along with Morton's toe and the cray-cray and immunity to TB. I always thought it was just genetic.

Also hurray for Irish job hunting, because Guinness and stuff!

*snuggles* Hey, no fair having some cool immunity! Now that's the kind of genes I could learn to love. *kicks own genes*

Guinness is good, but Irish men are better ;)

*snugs* You just need some more inbreeding, something cool's bound to show up eventually :P Oh, and a lot of my family don't have wisdom teeth either.

Ummm, fwiw most people I know who have the Viking thing opted for the surgery. I'm just hoping I haven't lost that draw because it'd make it hard to paint, I'm not old enough to know yet though.

Oh fuck yes, the men; I should go to Ireland for a weekend and get myself out of the doldrums.

I hope your Dad's going to be okay? Hah, there's history of cancer in our family, now there's a thought I don't want to dwell on overmuch. GENETICS! *shakes fist*

Also, big yay for Fanmix Table of Win! And, of course, jobhunting in Ireland! *\o/*

Oh yeah, Dad's fine at the moment. It's just a lack of mobility in his pinky finger.

The Fanmix tables fill me with joy because I can point and say, "Look! Someone likes it! A lot of someones!"
