It might be the only sunshine he sees all day.*

So my graduation has come and gone. I got there half an hour early and waited outside while Important People fiddled with papers. As one of these people walked passed me and into the room, she asked if I was alone. Yeah, it's just me. I could hear them a bit later, saying how I was helemaal alleen** and I felt just awful about it, not having a single soul present with me. Any friend I might have had at the graduation was out of the country - including Willy - as were my parents and brother, and my supervisors were also out of the country and my program supervisor had gotten fired last year during the department's Epic Shrinkage.

There were three people seated at a long table and I sat across from them in a chair, a bit like this (but in a nicer room, with less space away from the table and with no drugs anywhere). The guy in the middle read out a little speech about the program I'd done and my average grade and how he was "delighted" (yes, with air quotes*** and all) to give me the diploma.

But first, Maarten (the prof' who'd helped me with the ArcGIS program) had a few words prepared, which he read out, mainly detailing what I'd done, just listing it out and the like. There were brief references to anecdotes or somesuch and a few comments on myself as a student and as a person. Then he read out a bit that my supervisor had sent, which was totally unexpected and really sweet of him. Then I got my papers, signed the giant Guest Graduate Book.

Then Maarten accompanied me to the Sweating Room (where students used to wait before their exams) to add my signature onto the wall amongst the thousands of others (including, protected behind clear plastic, those of the Queen, a few Princes, Mandela and Churchill). The walls were packed. Maarten took a couple pics, which was very sweet of him - I'll post 'em when I get 'em.

He then invited me for a coffee, seeing as I had absolutely no one. Pity coffee, I can has. But it was, again, very sweet of him and I actually had a good time talking with him for an hour and a half. He even gave me a graduation gift! A frame photograph of Amboseli with Kilimanjaro in the background, taken from the Observation Hill and overlooking the swamp and incoming elephants. (Yes, I know exactly where it was taken.) I am just blown over by his kindness. I have no idea what I would've done instead - wandered around like a sad wet wraith, I guess.

I haven't done anything today. I complain. )

I did talk to my dad yesterday. It's funny (in a sad wet weasel sort of way) that my relationship with my dad is so much better over the phone, and especially when my mom's not there (because then dad'll just pass me off to her). I mean, civil conversations and sharing and caring and all! The first day I tried to find some sort of job and panicked and cried all day, I talked and vented to him, and it was nice. Why can't this happen face-to-face? Like, I have this conditioned response in his presence to freak out and rage, but over the phone, it's like, Daddy!

In other news, I cannot watch Watchmen's prison-shrink scene without ranting and raving at the psychologist's utter, utter fail. (One day, I might even write the fail down. Because there is so. much. fail. And I'm not even a psychologist, much less a trained and licensed maximum-security-prison criminal psychologist.) Which leads me to the crack desire to see Clarisse of Silence of the Lambs interview Rorschach. At least she'd do a better job.

In related news, I watched Dollhouse's next-to-last episode ever (die, Fox) and had the crack desire to have Rorschach find out about the Dollhouse and rant about it. Because I'm obsessed (yes, we know) I like his moral rants.

I neither have the skills nor the knowledge to write either of these, and they're so cracked out and random in what I'm finding to be a relatively-small fandom that I can't just hope they'll already exist. And it's not the sort of thing you can ask for in a kink meme...is it?

So today I tried to call the doctor to make an appointment (instead of yesterday, which is when I should've) because they said they were open "every day", making no mention of weeks and weekends. The first time I called (after even getting dressed to go out, because I'd do anything to put off making a phonecall), there's a recording in Dutch giving various phone numbers and saying something about, "Out for lunch, back at 2." I called again at 2 and got a different recording saying how they were closed on weekends, and I could call this number if it were an emergency.

So now I don't know what to do, whether to hold out until Monday and pray they can see me before the end of Tuesday (and they can put me on whatever delectable antibiotics I need) or whether to go for the Emergency! side. Sickle fails to make good plans and instead goes quietly insane. )

Also, at the Biology Building, I've been twice introduced to new Spanish ladies either working or studying there. One was introduced to me by Moon, the receptionist with whom I speak Spanish because he's trying not to lose the language, because the lady was right there. It went well. The second was introduced to me by my previous supervisor simply because the lady was Spanish and therefore I had to meet her. It didn't go so well, for a number of reasons. A girl's gotta rant about something. )

By the way, both my supervisors will be out of the country during my graduation, and any teachers I may have had during this program wouldn't know who I am anyway (they taught me way back in 2007) or aren't Biology teachers, so I will be speechified by the professor who helped me with the computer programs while I was working on my last project. I feel like such a failure for not having anyone.

Furthermore, I had nothing for lunch but the last dregs of the potato sack, fried. It was either than, or pasta again. Or a slice of cheese. I fail at life.

On the plus side: snow.

Evidence that Sickle is Stupid:

Exhibit A: The reason I recently have not been enjoying my chamomille honey tea and the reason I have been staying up late easily may have an underlying joint cause. Why? It wasn't chamomille honey I was drinking, but motherfuckin' black with an extra dose of pigment tea. I'm half-way through the box and I only just realized this. Sure, the tea didn't look right (i.e. translucent and golden-tinged) but black like the heart of Vetinari cloaked in assassin's robes, but I never actually thought that this meant anything. I figured the so-called honey flavour did things, Strange Things. So, folks, when Reality is hitting me in the face, I apparently let my preconscieved "But I thought I was buying chamomille!" notions prevail. I suck.

It's Saturday. I've cleaned the house, been to the market and had the requisite kibbeling and stroopwaffel lunch, asked questions galore at the knitting store and hung out at the computer lab trying to work and, eventually, working. Until, that is, I got kicked out (they were closing).

So here I am, feeling utterly exhausted and guilty over work and eyeing the laundry like it might just decide to wash itself if I pout hard enough. (No luck so far.) So instead of anything else, I'm going to cuddle under my comforter - btw, I miss my old apartment's couch liek woah - and have lemon flavoured tea, chocolate-covered cookies, and Batman Begins (about 2 weeks behind schedule).

Went to Amsterdam today, after slicing my heel open - well, not really slicing, but there was blood - on the bike-support metal thingy on the ground as I was locking it up. *sigh* The good things is that since I had to buy band-aids anyway - no way was I going to walk a city with an open wound making sweet love to my sandal strap - I also bought cough-tablets. Don't relaly know what they do, specifically. As long as there's aiding and abetting for the little white blood cells and their kin, I'm good.

So, Amsterdam again. Did my usual round-about tour, had fries (with remouladesaus, for a change), snooped around the Englih-language bookstore, got hit on, ate my sandwitch while listening to WWZ, captured a painting as it tried to escape upon the wind and returned it to its captor and creator, got hit on again (this time, of the "I'm going to walk along with you and talk" variety), more WWZ and an ice-tea as I cradled a candle, bought a dodo (of doom, replica), then off to watch Prince Caspian, where I totally failed to recognize Eddie Izzard was Reepicheep (whom I unabashedly love in all his forms, but damn was he cute in this film), coveted Susan's leather corset, rolled my eyes at Susan/Caspian, waved my fist at having the Damsel Is Awesome Markswoman cut short and supplanted with Damsel In Distress and followed by Damsel Gives Man All The Credit, and near-cried a bit at Peter and Susan's exile because if I've ever truly believed in anything ever, it was in Narnia, so their exile fell too close to home when I read it.

What started off as YouTube wander through John Barrowman's musicals then into Julie Andrews' 12-year-old self and The King and I, then a quick Yul Bynner search brought his anti-smoking commercial (which I remember watching once on TV).

Then a few related links later and I'm watching Thanks, Tobacco: You Killed My Mom, which is a personal documenting of sonicbondage's mom's struggle with lung cancer at her request to disencourage smoking. It runs throughout her illness and hospitalization, through to her death and burial. Needless to day, it is not for the faint of heart, for it will be wrenched. The hospital scenes were tough on me particularly, due to it bringing up personal memories. (Some other bits made me uncomfortable in the, "I can't believe you're filming this" way for a number of different reasons.)

Then that video's related-link list brought me to Killed on Camera by chicagoreader. The summary describes it as Footage of Chicago police officer Alvin Weems shooting an unarmed man. Narration by Chicago Reader staff writer John Conroy. Full story. I stared at the whole thing with my mouth wide open and my love for humanity weeping profusely in a corner.

I've decided not to embedd these - and I'm still iffy on actually posting this - because they're both, in completely different ways, terrible, terrible things to watch. I'm so sorry, so very sorry. I almost want to tell you all not not watch these, but, if you can, you learn a bit. (Oh, but it's a tough lesson.)

My next YouTube search is going to be "Tennant hair" and by gods, I'm not straying for that.

ETA: The hair delivers, so watch this instead. It's a double-whammy of optimistic "I lurvs people"

Last night I watched what I was shocked to realize was the Season Finale of Ashes to Ashes. Well, shocked because I'm silly that way. I mean, of course a season ends at the 8th episode. Anyway, it was awesome and amazing. I actually think it might be better than Life on Mars' first finale. (Except for the Sam!angst, which nothing can beat.) Whereas LoM has the creepy dreams to push us to the finale, A2A has the finale as a giant calendar deadline the whole season. Also, it just felt like a bigger revelation and had more oomf behind it. Plus, the Guv's speach had me cheering too. Gotta love Gene.

I swear, though, if Alex doesn't stop calling people constructs to their faces I'm going to have to smack her. Sam had his big crazy moments, but a) he didn't know what was going on and b) he acted pretty normal the rest of the time. "Do you now feel like 'second-hand goods' and no longer worthy to be cherished? And I thought we'd grown as a society. Gah.

Two memes via [livejournal.com profile] lienne:

Meme the first: Dragged out of the comfort zone

Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, thoughts on yaoi, favorite type of underwear, graphic techniques, etc. Repost in your own journal so that we can all learn more about each other.

Meme the second: The Four-By-Four Meme i.e. Questions! Zomg! )

In other news, the day continues to suck.

Ok, so I've thought about it some more and am now freaking the fuck out about tomorrow's viewing. Why won't they give me the address? Why do they want to meet me at the station?

What the fuck?

Will I be made into pie?

I sent another email explicitly requesting for the address (and other details, like, oh the cost - oh fuck I knew the cost the size) and sayign that there's no need for them to pick me up. (What the fuck?!?)

Pie. Me. Not good.

Went to Haarlem with ISN folk today. It was squishy, despite the trip being a bit of a touristic disappointment. We checked out the train station, a hofje, the market square, the Teylersmuseum (oldest in the Netherlands) and had those aweful and huge croquetes for lunch.

The neatest thing in the museum was this pair of huge satellite-shaped disk (one of which is visible in this picture as a golden disk on a tripod). One disk had a ticking clock held in front of it by wires, smack centre. The shape of the thing is such that it applifies both heat and sound. This meant that I got to be Sylar for a moment - or poor ol' Dale - and hear a little pocket watch tick from a good few feet away. *grin* I felt speshul.

Elisa msg'd me an email of some chich who had a room for rent. I emailed, and I'm going to view a room tomorrow. Trouble is, the chick just won't give me the gorram address. I have a horrible feeling I just might be kidnapped by psychotic crack whores.

Sketchy McSketchy? )

In other news, Ashes to Ashes 1x01 was sweet. It was wonderful to see the Gene Genie again. (Even if they crushed all hopes of seeing Sam again. And what about Cartwright?) I did want to smack Alex upside the head sometimes, but I think she'll grow on me.

Also? I have absolutely no food in the house aside from 3 slices of semi-sentient ham, bone-dry granola and various condiments. Woe.
