It's different when it happens right in front of you.*

Castle's 2x13 and 3x13 can basically be watched back-to-back as they both deal with the mystery behind Kate Beckett's mother's murder. It seems like the case is very much an onion, with each episode that focuses on it peeling back a new layer of conspiracy and puppettery.

Both episodes also have specific similarities, but the greatest one is the scene where Beckett goes off the case. In 2x13, she goes off voluntarily, while in 3x13 she's kicked off, but in both cases she storms out of Captain Montgomery's office and ignore's Castle's worried call of, "Beckett?" Instead, she yanks her jacket off her chair, flings it over her shoulder, and walks out on Castle's even more worried, "Kate?"

Watching these scenes back-to-back gave me a huge case of déjà vu. While not all of the scene's shots are the same - camera angles differ, especially at the beginning - the treatment of Kate's walk-out is eerily similar. If this is a deliberate choice - especially considering how one episode is basically a continuation of the other - then my hat's off to the directors and producers involved. Also note how both are titled on the similar fight theme: Sucker Punch and Knockdown.

Screencaps )

And by the way, Knockdown had a much more serious tone than is usual for Castle, and it had a few exchanges that left me scrambling for a pen and declaring my undying love for the Ryan&Esposito duo. So allow me to share a few of those quotes - one of Castle and his mother, a few others of Ryan and Esposito being awesome. Spoilers apply, of course. Read more... )

I have no idea how I missed this in my first viewing - and my second, and third, and fourth... Imaaaaage and CAPSLOCK )

Life: In other news, you know what's pretty cool? Having your mother Google until she drops looking for a novel by the name Les juifs and being unable to find it, followed by her telling me about it in the vaguest terms possible ("It was about Jewish traditions! And they got married at the end!") and then me taking not even five minutes to find it for her. I win.

Nanowrimo: I do believe that tomorrow we will properly meet Kezef and seen Dean do something badass. (Useless, but still badass.) I still don't quite know what Kezef wants with Icarus - it has something to do with his purpose and the locking up of Heaven, but I don't know exactly or even how. It's going to involve blood, though, because apparently "Angel of Punishment = Vampire" is teh trufax in my brain.

Heave away, me jollies*

Sickle's Brain Went Buh-Bye, Have Some Bullet Points Instead:

  • I got the first quote over on [livejournal.com profile] ljdq's Answers. Whoot whoot!

  • I've had sea shanties stuck in my head for ages, which is both awesome and annoying because I don't actually know the whole songs. So I've been humming bits of Lukey's Boat, Heave Away, Ramblin' Rover and Donkey Riding over and over again.

  • On that topic, Great Big Sea ♥ I watch ed them live years ago, and I loved it. (Or I would have, but I was in the deepest state of depressed funk that whole summer because I'd failed a course.)

  • I watched The Walking Dead last week (1x02) and while it was good, it didn't have the same shiny coating of awesomeness that the pilot did. Plus, it didn't help that I facepalmed at a little plot and science (yes! science! with zombies!) fail. Spoilers )

Nanowrimo 2010:

  • A few days ago I realized that my brain was going "Omg, argh, this sucks!" at Nanowrimo 2010, which was dispiriting because its perception of Nanowrimo 2009 was, "Omg, so organized, it flows so well and argh! Will never be repeated!" but then I saw that whilst I was doing Nanowrimo 2009, my brain was going, "omg, argh, this sucks!" So I guess I'm comforted by the utter suckitude of Nanowrimo 2010. It probably doesn't suck royally (just slightly). It might even make sense in the end!

  • Today's writing session was not so much like pulling teeth and a lot more like bashing my head repeatedly against a wall for the most part. I went back and added to the scenes I'd written yesterday, except one was Icarus, Chip and Dean talking and they didn't actually say all that much except angst and Dean wasn't being a hunter enough, and the other scene was Kezef being all ooooh, evil, but nothing was happening. I tried to fix it and I don't know if I succeded because of the massive amounts of SUCK but it's goddamn over.

  • Next up: Zombie hordes attack! ...this scares me a little, because it's all action with some plottyness on the side plus a reveal and then a panic moment. I do believe we're reaching the big plotty climax from which everything winds down. It's like I have a plot!

Masterlist of Sickle's "Omg, I'm So Obsessed" Crushes:

This is a list of actors, writers and fictional characters whom my brain's latched onto at some point or other. This isn't a list of people I find hot (that list is way longer and does, of course, include some of those listed here). Rather, it's the people I've developed an unhealthy obsession for at some point in my life, who've fascinated me for some reason, who's work I've tracked down like a bloodhound or took over my POV-analysis lobe. In other words, uber-crushes without, necessarily, the sexin'. I'm undoubtably forgetting some.

Below, then, is the list with photos and a brief reason as to the why of the obsession and the person's main features.

Okay, okay, first of all? Ow!*

I've been a bit musically bored lately, so I went over to [livejournal.com profile] fanmix (members-only) and went a little crazy. Now I just need to load up the 'Pod so's I can actually listen to them. I think I'll get some listening done tomorrow while I clean the big kitchen (yeach). I also want to try knitting the next step in the elephant toy following detailed instructions made of win and there's the icons I want to make, too. Musical chances ahoy!

Oh, and oh gods, I want to clean up a photograph of a map for my internship report (which will be "fun") and I want to do some statistics this weekend - averages and margin of error, nothing difficult but mind-numbingly boring. This past week has basically been a waste of time and said time is getting short. Also, I'm going to be with my folks (in Italy!) for three days, so I might want to catch up for that.

I've been staring at the mailbox lately, because my brother suggested he might be sending me something for my birthday (last month's event), and also Danny's jam's been in limbo for a while. Me want mail-jam *pout*

I wizzed through Castle Season 1, giggling all the way. I think this show's delightful. It's funny and light and engaging and adorable and ♥ I adore Alexis, Castle's daughter, and his Broadway mom :D I can't say more because again, light and fun so no great big thinky-thinks (and it's about time I had a show like that).

Tonight I watched Dollhouse, which seems to be suffering from Fox's mistreatment as it will be on hiatus for a few weeks. (Supernatural was also off this week, which was Not Cool, yo.) Anyway, I watched Belonging 2x04 (Trailer) and holy mother of all puppies, was that an awesome episode that just stomped on all my heartstrings. Read more... )

What Was It Like?

Fantastic. Leakey is an extraordinary lecturer, mixing in humour with earnestness, political commentary and personal history. Everyone clapped their hearts out when he finished, and after each question.

The first question, posed by a Tanzanian PhD student (and good gods do I love the accent) was how to change the mind-set in Africa encouraged by evangelical christians who say, "God told us to multiply and fill the earth. Our country is not yet full, so why should we not have as many children as we can?" Leakey responded wonderfully, Read more... )

Fandom Owns My Soul

After months of scrolling past fanfic posts in my flist, barely even scanning the newletters, I'm back in the Itching For Fic Couch. And, of course, it's SPN. Help your brother's boat across, and your own will reach the shore.*

Spent delightful day basically lying in bed watching Supernatural. It was marred only by my lack of food in the house (popcorn for lunch!) and my brilliant idea of leaving the house for coffee just when most shops are closing. Managed to score a cap' and lemon cake and a chapter of Threshold. Also sent up co-account with Brother for That Thingy with him being co-pilot to my laptop. It's a bit otherworldly to see your mouse wandering around clicking things without your say-so.

And now, m'dears, food! And the sweet, sweet hotness that is Dean Winchester. I find SPN thoroughly enjoyable mainly because I can watch it as just a show, without trying to puzzle things out like Lost or wanting to play smack-a-bitch like Heroes. It's just plain fun - and funny - with very pretty folk who occasionally angst and always beat the crap out of something.

Tomorrow I'll start dealing again with lions, funds and finding a subletter for my room. (I've already got 2 emails since putting up the advert. last night, but I can't bear to handle them now.)

Hey gnomes! Sorry for letting Twitter post for me so oft, but I'm being worked to the bone and thus have either a) no time or b) no energy to post. Also, I have a Links List as long as a gibbon's arm and then some, so that might take a while.

That said, I've been watching Supernatural 4x00. Apart from a mangled-handful of dubbed episodes from unknown seasons, this is my first time with SPN. I likes. I'm a bit wary, what with all the hate on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets, thinking maybe the show's going to bitchslap me when I'm not looking, but I have high hopes. It's better than Charmed on its bad days, and I've suffered through a few of those. (You take what you can when you get access to TV during the summer.)

Also, Dean's distracting me with the pretty. (And his acting's nice, too, though I'm a sucktastic judge of that.)

PS: I've been trying to make a cover for the Globo Sapiens fanmix I've finally finished listing, but Paint** sucks and Gimp is kicking my ass. I just want to crop and size, damn it!
