WIN: Suitcase for Rome is all set. The one for ski will be transferred from the trolley to the other suitcase because winter clothes + food takes up a lot of space. This is the bus ride that I've got to look forward to this coming Friday night. Oy.

FAIL: FAO information on the internship still unread.

OTHER: Went out for lunch and a walk but got to the restaurant too late for lunch so had a sandwich at a cafe. Felt too much like crap to walk, so bought lollipops (for trip) and collapsed onto bed. I watched Dollhouse's finale. Damn you, Joss! The one thing I ask! I also watched Winged Creatures (trailer) which did nothing to help cope with Dollhouse. The bits with Forest Whitaker pissed me off royally (Get the fuck out of Las Vegas, moron! Especially when you've just won a shitload! Stop! Gambling!) but it was pretty good nonetheless.

This was, of course, another film watched because Jackie Earle Haley was in it (look, I find an actor who rocks my socks, I watch their films, okay?) and his bits were short but good. And I have to admit, the man can wear a tight t-shirt really well. Like, really.

Today I signed up for a week-long ski trip with the international students, because it would be good for me to be social, and I'll never again have the opportunity for an event that cheap, and because my parents think I should.

Skiing scares the shit out of me, I'll have to say. It's the speed and the thought of falling downhill, like there's a precipice at the end of the hill and I'm just going to fall off. I can ski decently well, but it feels a bit like I'm about to freakin' die of fear.

The fear of speed is a lovely little psychological scar from the time I was riding a particular bastard of a horse Read more... ) So that's why the sensation of speed freaks me out, and why I don't quite enjoy skiing. But I've signed up and I'm going to go and hopefully make friends and have people to hang out with for a week somewhere in France. And two days after that, in March, I'm hopping over to Rome again, because I've got to experience Easter Mass with the Pope and all that jazz.

Apart from that, I've skimmed through 420 job placements in the biology section of a search page, eaten cake, watched Nightmare on Elm Street 2 and failed at life.

I was trolling through my old entries yesterday looking for stuff, when I came across the entry for March 21, 2008 and I realized, with horror and disappointment and defeatism, that I'm at the same place as that post. Almost two years later, and I'm in the same fucking corner.

A horrible day was had by Sickle.

Firstly, there was the Waking Up At UnGodly Hours, followed by the Interminable Waiting of the Doctor's Waiting Room. Seriously, why give me an appointment if I'm going to be taken in half an hour later? And this appointment was just half an hour after they opened. Just how behind can you get in that little time?

Anyway, Doctor's appointment was had and we've confirmed that my face isn't going to fall off in a horrible mess any time soon, and that a little creme will clear the eczema right up. Yays.

Cue the Trial of the Pharmacy. My doctor sent the prescription directly to the pharmacy "for convenience". (Sear those words into your brains, readers, because you'll have to recognize their bloody corpses in the morgue a few sentences from now.) So I go to the pharmacy after my doctor's appointment, and they don't have the prescription. The girl working there says that prescriptions sometimes take up to two days to make it there, which is either utter bullshit (because some people really need their medicine right the fuck now) or she said days instead of hours, which doesn't make linguistic sense, especially since the word for hour in Dutch is uur (and the words for day are similarly alike). So I go again later that afternoon. Again, they don't have my prescription. I go home, call the doctor's office and get them to re-fax the prescription. I go to the pharmacy a third time and get my meds. If I'd been given the prescription from the get-go, this could all have been avoided.

In the afternoon I also tried to sell my look-brand-spankin'-new books at the second hand store I went to earlier this week, armed with the knowledge that the owner would be there today. I lay the books on the table, he glances at their covers and restacks them, then says, "I'm not interested." I doubt he even read the titles. I even had a Hugo and Nebula winning SF book - The Left Hand of Darkness which is a Good Book and he was probably all, "If it ain't yella I ain't buyin'." To which I say, curse you, Bookman!

I was really upset over this dismissal, though. But that's just because my hormones are in full drive and I'm all wibbley and angry at the same mother-lovin' time and this makes for strange and sad and frustrated times.

Anyway, my CV's all done now, looking awesome and professional only because [livejournal.com profile] poisoned_sleep is a wonder and helped me out tons with hands-on innitiative. So that's good. (Except in regards to [livejournal.com profile] poisoned_sleep, where adjectives like awesome and amazing and astounding are more apt. Alliteration ftw \o/)

To make up for the suckitude that was the day, I've been listening to my old Rayne fanmixes (Firefly's River/Jayne, that is). I made pancakes for dinner (which were on-nom-niscious but not near as filling as they ought to've been). I have a load of Doctor Who related stuff to watch - deleted scenes, commentaries, Sarah Jane Adventures with Ten cameos.

I've also been reading through [livejournal.com profile] watchfic_dir and having an utter blast. I love the fic I'm finding! (See epic fanfic list of loooove.) I think I have a new OT3 (if I ever had one - I think I only ever OT3ed Peter/Gabrielle/Sylar of Heroes, which may or may not actually count as a threesome at some points in Lana @ [livejournal.com profile] capn_mactastic's fics). Anyway, Dan/Laurie/Rorschach is the threesome to end all threesomes, especially in post-plot when they're all shacked up together. I mean, Dan/Laurie is canon and Dan/Rorschach was very slashtastic in the movie (both restrain the other from rash fighting moves, they were crime-bustin' partners, Dan's NoooOOOOoooo!, Rorschach's bean-thievery, it just goes on and on). Also, the dynamics are fascinating, because of course one partner is all "No! Sex bad! Impure!" but caves, and another is all "I'm taking the reins and flying with it" and the third is all pudgy and squishy and adorable.

Today we continued proud tradition of Sickle Failing At Mornings. I did, however, manage to recycle and photocopy selections off of two books I'm going to sell second-hand (although one's in perfect condition - the other is already a second-hand). Then I tried to work on the lion mane's article, but failed due to having papers I needed be in my house, whereas I was not.

The books are The Mammoth Book of Monsters (some good stories, some appalling, and one - "Rawhead Rex" - burnt disgusting images in my brain**) and Deprivers (brilliant concept*** which dies horribly along the way, especially with a complete abandonment of the main character for other POV's - not a multiple POV-book, no: abandonment - the first and last part of which would make an awesome movie****).

I've also tried cleaning up another corner of my room, which translates to my staring hopelessly at a myriad tangle of pantyhose I didn't even know I had - my mother showers me with the bastards - wondering where the hell to stow them so I could use them without them strangling me in my sleep like horrific disembodied octopuses.

Then I watched the first bit of Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut because obsessions are healthy. I'm behind on The Daily Show and am not upset over this. Must rectify, of course, because I do love Jon Stewart.

I've also been listening to A Perfect Circle's Counting Bodies Like Sheep (To The Rhythm of the War Drums) thanks to darling [livejournal.com profile] seschat's Best 25 of 2009 Fanmix. Upon first listening to it, I went 0.0 then *flail* then OMG! Because it seemed perfect for The Master. And now, while yes, it is Masterly (war drums, yo!), it's also perfect for Freddy Krueger (yes I will watch the classic movies as recommended by [livejournal.com profile] queenanthai and yes, before even thinking about watching the remake, Jared Padalecki and Jackie Earle Haley notwithstanding). I've also found a brilliant fanvid of it, featuring Schindler's List (major WARNING for distressing and upsetting visuals). Also, the song's really really awesome all by itself and makes me want to thump around the room in a bizarre modern-dance fashion like a crazy wraith on crack.

Quote of the Day: Douglas Coupland, Eleanor Rigby, here
The thing about meat with me, though, is how it speaks to me about the human body. All of us are stuck inside our meaty bodies. I've always imagined that regular people are happy to be inside their bodies, whereas lonely people yearn to ditch their carcasses. I suspect lonely people wish they could forget the whole meat-and-bone issue altogether. We're the people most likely to believe in reincarnation simply because we can't believe we were shackled into our meat in the first place. Lonely people want to be dead, yet we're still not quite ready to go - we don't want to miss the action; we want to see who wins next year's Academy Awards. More to the point, the lonely, like all humans, yearn to meet that somebody who'll make us feel better about being trapped inside our species' meat-and-bone soul containment system. Oh God, I sound like a prison warden.

Nano: Catching up on a lost day is murder. I'm still 926 words behind, despite a 2,246 word marathon.

So far, Saunders has cooed over the car Chip found for him like Dean babying his darling Impala and Chip has entered flashback-land as he remembers the road trip he did with Steven. Oh, I didn't mention Chip's gay? Well, of course I haven't, he's been running from zombies. Sexuality or even sex are rather pointless when you're running from zombies. But he is and he had this huge romance with Steven in collage, but Steven is dead now like a large percentage of the country. But Icarus the not-really-angel is pretty fine lookin'...

I also haven't mentioned what Chip looks like. I suck at physical descriptions of my characters - actually most descriptions - but I can see them in my head just fine, and now Chip is no longer black and Shadow of American Gods's slightly less imposing twin but rather Season 2 Sam Winchester's lookalike because damnitall I had to go and mention bangs, right? That completely changed Chip in my head in 0.01 seconds flat. *sigh* Hi, new version of Chip. At least you're still tall, and you were always lanky in my head.

Also, omg what the hell is the goddamn plot?!? I'm almost halfway through and have no idea what the climax is going to be. There's a zombie-chase and angel-awakening coming up, then some yellow-brick-roading to Resistance Camp, but... Argh.

Today's morning was pretty much wasted, although I did manage to get an international student card. Getting said card involved:

1) going to the address I'd been given
2) going to the new address stated on the door
3) getting the form
4) going home for a passport photo
5) going to a biology building to photocopy my student card
6) freaking out because the biology building has been completely emptied and was dripping with post-apocalyptic vibes
7) going to another, farther biology building to photocopy my student card
8) going back to the store to hand in my papers
9) moseying about the store waiting for the card to be made
10) profit! payement! for card and teeny-tiny metallic Ganesh statue ♥

I then proceeded to the train station where I got a juice and miniature sandwhich for lunch and also caved like a little wuss and bought the most gigantic and chocalatic cookie on the face of the earth.

Went to work, ate cookie, had coffee and wrote a total of 750 words more for the introduction. *sigh* I've yet to finish the results and there's the discussion to be done - traditionally the longest part - and I want to be finished by the end of this year and holy galavanting gods on rollerscates it's almost November.

Ran today at a good pace and extrended the route by another large chunk. Am now suffering from a bellyache due to lousy goulash dinner and will watch Heroes (although I'd much rather watch Castle, which is all I watched yesterday).

Okay, when Jesse led them into the house and there were no parents and soup on the stove [...], I wondered if this kid was in trouble. [...] I thought of Something Wicked, Sam and Dean alone in that dumpy motel room, and I wondered how they would react to this.

If they saw a kid being treated the way John treated them, how would they handle it? Would they be displeased, try to do something about it? Would they accept it as just the way this particular family worked?

What if they met a hunter who was dragging kids around while pursuing this hard, risky life? Would they try to dissuade him? Give the kid a Snickers bar? Team up for some target practice? I wonder. [...] I guess that's what fanfic is for.

Today's been pretty quiet: woke up late, groceries, lunch-lunch (as opposed to my weekly fare of snackified-lunch), internetting... I also spent four hours going through and chucking out two boxes of stuff, dragged out from underneath the bed. Ye gods, did I have random and useless papers stowed away. (I may be keeping a few of these papers, because I am, at heart, a pack-rat.) I also had coffee, which made me feel energetic for a while, but then the magic devolved into nausea and stomach pain. It's still going strong. Bleh.

I finished Kung Fu Dunk yesterday (YouTube is awesome!). I really liked the movie, although it's not anything amazing, story-wise. Aw hell, I loved the movie. What's not to love? It's funny, has all sorts of martial arts ass-kicking ranging from the hilarious to the gorgeous, an adorable leading man, and, while being partly about basketball, doesn't fall into a sports-movie slot.

I watched Supernatural 5x01 yesterday, and I swear, I have never giggled, sporfled, laughed and paused-and-ranted so much whilst watching one. A few spoilery comments. )

I've got Carrie as this weekend's horror movie. A bit excited about it because it's got all this hype and I'm finally watching it, but I'm not expecting anything spectacular.

There's an international student party at a disco in Leiden tonight - starting in half an hour - but I don't have anyone to go with, still feel like I'm going to hurl on my shoes and, most importantly, don't feel like going at all.
