I'm announcing an official hiatus (as opposed to the "oh gods, work is draining the life force out of me" hiatus) for the coming week because I'm going to be galavanting about Europe. The Links of the Day will be done, eventually, so never fear. As for my fellow Supernatural viewers, be strong and keep the spoilers away from me until next Saturday (which is when I'll probably come crawling to y'all in tears and dire need of discussion.)

Today I applied for another internship, ate by mself, watched a bit of Going Postal (Poirot!) then joined mom downtown for yet another (unsuccessful) search for sandals and summer clothes.

A brand name caught my eye and gave me instant plot-bunnyitis, which is something I've been trying to get out of my system for the past couple of hours. Almost 600 words later and I'm still just setting up the story, have yet to get to the actual beginning of the reveal, but I'm loving it. I seem to have a thing for fallen angels and apocalypses. Yay for the oomf behind creativity!

There seems to be a lot of that running around lately, if the completed fanmix and (tiny little bit of) work on the fanvid are anything to go by. Speaking of, I'm glad I've discovered that Mediafire tells you how many times something's been downloaded. I mean, I'd be freaking out over no one giving a shit because there's only the one comment, but hey! Downloads are happening! Yay! (Still, comments are always nice. Not that I often do so with fanmixes, either, but hey.)

Also, I caught the last fifteen minutes of an episode of Lie to Me which has Tim Roth so I went :) and he was bloody, on the ground and at gun-point and I was like :D and then I saw that the gun-totin' villain was Cromartie aka John Henry so I was all \o/

Quote of the Day: Word of the Day, Friday, June 18, 2010
hegira: \he-JAY-ruh\, noun;
1. A journey to a more desirable or congenial place.
2. The flight of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina to escape persecution a.d. 622: regarded as the beginning of the Muslim Era.

Today I got a new wheel for my bike, knitting thingies for a new project (stuffed elephant, as a gift), spent aaaages trying to knit (undoing, redoing, rinse-and-repeat) and wrote some postcards, although gods know hwhere the post office is And...yeah. Today's been pretty meh.

Yesterday we had a house-meeting, so we call had dinner together and discussed how to be clean and considerate. It was nice. I then watched Dog Soldiers (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] fallen_iceangel, as yes, it is awesome) and Supernatural (hi-larious in the extreme). I also practiced some chords on Betsy, at which I sucked.

Alright, enough filler postage, have some links as I wander off to watch Underworld 3

Quotes of the Day: Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale
You would look at the man one day and you would think, I loved you, and the tense would be past, and you would be filled with a sense of wonder, because it was such an amazing and precarious and dumb thing to have done; and you would know too why your friends had been evasive about it, at the time.

Elayne Boosler (stand-up comedian)
Men and women perceive crime TOTALLY differently. Once when I was walking in New York with a boyfriend, he said, 'Gee, it's a beautiful night. Let's go down by the river.' 'What? Are you nuts? It's midnight; I'm wearing jewelry; I'm carrying money; I have a vagina with me... Tomorrow, I'll leave it in my other pants. Then we'll go down.'

I've had a pretty shit day, emotionally speaking. Yay! )

A few comments on television shows, belated by a couple hundred years:

a) When I was catching up on SPN and T:TSCC, I watched two episodes where both were focused on sucubi.

b) On SPN, Alastair singing Heaven when strapped down (or more technically correct, up) reminded me of Islington, of Neverwhere, singing the same thing.

c) Alastair and Islington need to have a chat. This could be in the same 'verse as the conversation between Crowley, Aziraphale, Castiel and Uriel.

So I went to the doctor's yesterday and totally didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition one part of the physical examination. Lookit! TMI! )

TMI out, random shit in:

I've got The Sarah Connor Chronicles 2x02 for tomorrow. (About 2x01? Summer Glau's "Please no squishy!" speech was fucking awesomely delivered. Also, I mourn the bangs.) I've started watching American Psycho and Watership Down on YouTube. I don't know which will prove the more disturbing or emotionally wrecking.

There's a blister on the roof of my mouth. Not from eating with the fork I'd just used to stir potatoes in boiling water (that resulted in a burnt lip), but from the actual potato. Damn you, tubers!

I've been falling asleep between 1 and 2 am thanks to accursed readings. Writing this post has been the only break I've had all day, having spent my lunch hour having a meeting with my supervisor, and going to the gym after class. Thank gods I read tomorrow's article this past weekend, or I'd be reading it now. And now, my dears, I want sleep.

I hereby declare that if I don't make a doctor's appointment tomorrow, y'all have my express permission to punch me inna face. Why, exactly. (TMI if you read between the lines.) )

Here endeth the TMIeth.

In other news, yesterday I read the second case analysis (Zenith Electronics's 1989 "What do we do about these impending HDTVs, yo?"**) It was just like old times back in Bacherlor-era, with my listening to ol' techno. Granted, that then evolved to Radiohead's "Scotch Mist" film, Indian music (Bunny Lava!, May He Poop?, Raja Hasan - Piya Haji Ali!), then Arabic (Habibi Ya Noor-El Ain!), then a Last of the Mohicans scene and finally a good troll through the Gary Oldman results page (e.g. The Scarlett Letter Fanvid, Part 1 of 3).

Today my group and I wrote up our report of the case analysis and then, after lunch***, discussed it with half of our class. (Two classmates get to shut up per discussion and grade us on our participation.) The discussion was fun (seriously!) and I managed to speak up thrice. It was a both frustrating and funny that one girl would just not shut up, making really long points, and stealing points (saying them before anyone else got a chance). Still, it was all good fun.

Then I went and sat in the sun for 45 minutes (omg! free time!) and tried to draw better versions of the chibi TDK characters. Then off to the gym, then racing back home to get shit I forgot for the gym and racing back to the gym in under half an hour to arrive breathless at the "Pilates and small ball" class, followed by some cardio with Neil Gaiman reading Shoggoth's Old Peculiar**** as accompaniment. Then, two seconds after leaving the gym, just as I was getting on my bike, the sky decided to drop the whole North Sea on me all the way home. Yays for about 5 minutes, then it was all, "Omfg, I can't see. Oh gods, my shoes are swimming pools. Gah! Everything's clinging to me in wet, cold and non-sexy ways!"

Short rant on female health (TMI) )

Yays, no TMI from here on out :)

I haven't been doing anything today, really, although I should be working on my Project Proposal. I'm just a bit off on my daily routine, a bit on a downer. So many things to do! At some point I'm going to have to lug the laptop to the Lipsius building to snag their wireless and chat with mom. (One flatmate's rewiring the internet at home, which means we're shit out of luck until she'd done.) I feel like I should be out and about doing something, but really if I were here actually working that would be most excellent. Alas...

On a related note, I've discovered that you can totally watch a film with only 94% of it down. I watched Brokeback Mountain again last night (and despite trolling and googling, I can't find any First Reactions entry of mine to this, so I must've not posted about it, which is strange). Ye gods. I'd forgotten how emotionally crushing and engaging it was. Read more... )

ETA: I just got this in an email about the Self Study oral exam:

Me: If you could also explain a bit as to the nature of the oral exam, I'd be very grateful.

Responder: As to the nature of the exam: please ask your fellow students how it went in their particular case. They are the most reliable source.

Argh! First off, as if all my friends had taken this exam already. Second off, how hard is it to say, "Well, we ask extensive questions about a few chapters" or "We ask your opinion on general topics" or "We ask for extensively backed up arguments". Seriously.

ETA2: I just emailed Mom Green and Purple Argyle, Of All Things (comments, accompanying essay and glossary included) because I'm stupid and have no sense of emotional self-preservation. Also, I kind of want to show her how fandom isn't made of fail. My just reading fic was a bizarre, time-wasting concept for her. ETA2b: Talked to Mom. She was like, "Wtf's argyle?" and "Omg it's in slang!" She skimmed through it - reading the comments mainly - and says she'll try to read it. (Her English has gotten waaaay rusty.) ♥.

ETA3: I'm getting random crack-addled images of where and how the Joker (re)applies his makeup. Damnit brain, you're not made for crack!

What kind of mess is this supposed to mean: Abstr. Proc. Joint Conf. Am. Assoc. Zoo Vet., Wildl. Dis. Assoc., Am. Assoc. Wildl. Vet. East Lansing, Michigan. Wtf, I ask you, wtf. (Yes, I know what the abbreviations mean, but good grief, that's a horrible title.)

I really, really hate that the good, basic articles I want aren't online. I've got a 1996 article, and those online only start from 1997. Let's not even talk about the 1970's ones. Argh!

Also, am in some serious pain. Cramps suck, yo.

ETA 3:17 pm: Still in fucking serious pain here. Yay nausea. I have to go to Leiden. I'd rather curl up on the bathroom floor and alternatively curse and impore deities. Three advils (my grand total of painkiller amunition), and, as always, they do nothing.

It doesn't. I don't want abortion. Abortion should be the rarest thing in the world. I am actually personally opposed to abortion. But I don't believe that I have a right to take what is an article of faith to me and legislate it to other people. That's not how it works in America.*

Babysitting unsuppervised today, as the mother called yesterday (a wee bit late - 10 pm - for spreading the news) and said she'd started work. Spent the rest of the night envisioning the route to the school, because though I've gone there twice, the panic I had the first day, and the conversation I had the second kind of distracted me from learning the route.

Apart from worrying about reaching the school in time, surprisingly calm about the situation.

Links of the day:

[livejournal.com profile] metaquotes seems to be on an abortion-roll, as there's a post on abortion and birth control by [livejournal.com profile] _status_quo, a post regarding the denial of the morning-after pill to a rape victim for religious reasons, which lead to a news story wherein a rape-victim gets imprisoned *and* denied her second dose of morning-after. Then there's a blog-archive countering ridiculous anti-pill arguments.

It's enough to make you weap - if you're not reaching for the shotgun already.
