Um, how's this for a change?

I think I like [livejournal.com profile] jadetest or [livejournal.com profile] nightturns2dayt, [livejournal.com profile] falllayout, [livejournal.com profile] desolatelayout, [livejournal.com profile] heartsnosb better, though.

Particularly the falllayout and desolatelayout.

Parents gone as of early this mornig, though I had to say goodbye yesterday. As always, there was some tears, some bitterness and then some last minute phone calls regarding the apparent invisibility of a package mom had given me.

Trying not to dwell too much.

So instead, let me teach you about the grizzle-polar bread hybrid. Or, well, point the way. Y'all can teach yourselves.

I will, however, tell that I have again struck gold wqith the Chinese because wikipedia is wonderful and has a Wiktionary, a Pinyin page and a whole page on Chinese, as in words and words in Chinese with their definitions. I can´t believe I´m doing this...

Immensely greatful to [livejournal.com profile] earthwhatwere for clearing up the injection-thing with Mal on Serenity. There is one thing that doesn't quite make sense, though. After Mal gets the cocky little smile beatten out of him by the Operative, he walks into the common room rolling down his sleeve. That just screams "recent injection". Now, sure, he got beat up and all, had some bruises and cuts, bloody nose etc. But would any of that require an injection? Painkillers would be either pills or a sort of "apply anywhere" thing (see Kaylee in Serenity episode or Jayne in War Stories). So the innoculating theory flies for the first time, but not quite for the second. Mur?

Love how some lines in Serenity are taken exactly from the series. (Like "not born a Shepherd", "petty thief" (outtake), "always loved to dance", etc.)

Tomorrow I have my French presentation on Marc Levy's "Et si c'était vrai" novel. Ugh. And on Wednesday, I'm joining the flat-mates in watching football. (Double ugh for the football, kinda-yay for the socializing). There will be pizza. Have to call Christina, see if we can go swimming sometime, and on Wednesday, Monica's cousin's neighbour is going to call me so we can chat. (She did Biology too, so we'll see...) Might also try and get in touch with the super-social girl that works in the hospital with MCarmen who said she'd like to meet me. Must socialize, damnit.

Oh, and boondoggle (n) means "A waste of time and/or money; a pointless activity. ". I just thought that was the most wonderful word in the world.

And that appears to be that.

Time to be responsible and catch up on [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes.

Finished! Whee! First actual completed Firefly fanfic! (Or, actually, first completed fanfic ever). Although it’s not exactly a fic, really. Storywise, I mean. Just a few missing scenes.

Techincal questions: Is it really PG-13? Do I have to mention the not-really-there pairing in the intro?

And if anyone feels like constructive criticism, here are the bits where I’m unsure of:

Is the engine-scene too…well, too much? Does it try to hard? Does the ending have an actual “this is ze end” feel? Or should I add a bit more (and believe me, I’ve got the cut-lines* to work from)?

PS: To all those who’ve watched Serenity: why and what the hell did Simon inject Mal with before the bank-job? (And quite possibly later on in the movie: there’s some highly suspicious shirt-fixing.) Is our cappy ill? A junkie? Wha?

* 1) Once Simon bid them leave the infirmary and before heading back to the engine room, Kaylee slipped down into her bunk and stuffed her bloodied work-rag into a drawer.

2) She didn’t know whether she wanted to keep it, wash it, throw it into the airlock or smother it in engine grease, but she…

3) Kaylee has a smudge of blood somewhere that Jayne sees and surreptitiously rubs off.

Problem is, bits 1 and 2 need a bit of explanations as to what exactly does she do with the rag, and why and I think the whole thing would just drag on too much.

What have I been doing lately? )Gonna watch some (I’ll try) of Serenity, possibly the commentary bit, because I’m nothing if not perseverant in my obsessions. Also, I like things that make me giddy with joy. Could use more of them.

Did I hallucinate the post where someone mentioned a second Easter Egg of River fighting the Reavers in a cartoon-version of the scene?

Ooh, just two more things, because my left hand has gone completely numb and I have to get in bed (though have been on bed for ages):

1)so totally knew Inara was in the shuttle when Mal got all chocked up. Glad to see the footage exists, even if only as a deleted scene
2)Jayne scared the hell out of me when he started talking all quiet and steely to Mal about Serenity Valley. “No, that’s right…” More so than when he yelled. Freaky creepy scary. But how can I be scared of itty bitty funny Jayne? Why, damnit it? Go back to being all adorable, Adam, you with your amazing little leather mittens. (I absolutely adore those work gloves. Don’t ask me why. Just do.)

And was it just me, or was his “western accent” way strong in his first scene and in the Jayne&Kaylee scene?

And now I wish I had friends within a hundred mile radius so that I could share. Maybe tempt? Convert? I pimped the film to Jo (she was totally sold by the space-geishas which I have now confirmed have a very itty bitty part, and they hardly seem space-geishas at all) and I distinctly remember having K swear to me she’d watch it. But meh.

Read more... )Rewatching Firefly’s “Safe”, wonder why River says “Not him” in reference to Mal as he walks in after she’s had her “not a gorram doll” outburst. What does she mean? Also, when River stops dancing in shock, the editing is a bit ambiguous. Does she either “see” Book wounded when Mal does (and not when he’s shot, which is interesting) or does she react in anticipation of the kidnapping of Simon. (Although she doesn’t seem too concerned afterwards, when she finds Simon as if it were hide-and-seek. “I found you!”)

Which is why I'm looking for the vid cliip with the exchange between Mal and River, which goes(ish):

Mal: Shoot me if I'm wrong.
River: *points gun at Mal*
Mal: Or we could talk some more.

Not really doing much else. Feeling very apathetic.

Oh, yeah, watching a music vid, The World I Know and thoroughly enjoyed War to End All Wars and I think this vid is Adam Baldwin answering a Q.

Boooored.

And there's The Universe vid, which is purty.

Still bored.

Pretty uneventful holidays so far, and probably not changing. Haven't written any* and haven't investigated Barcelona labs and stuff for future jobs either. Nor courses, academic or otherwise. Just can't seem to get it together to look for it. I'd rather hide procrastinating, checking out such things as:

THE Firefly clip. If you only watch one, this just might have to bit it. :)

Music vids

a) River music video to U2's "Man and a Woman"
b) River music video to Ghost of the Robot's "Dangerous"
c) Mal music video using Cash's "Hurt"
d) Mal music video using "Halleluja"

Serenity clips

a) on River
b) escaping the Reavers
c) the Operative ("Dear Buddha...")
d) losing a panel
e) River beating up people
f) the space battle ("Target the Reavers! Target everyone! Somebody fire!") featuring ze leaf on ze vind ("What does that mean?")

Interviews

a) gush at the on-set interviews of Adam Baldwin, Jewel Strait, Nathan Fillion, Sean Maher, Ron Glass
b) laugh your head off at Alan Tudyk's shadow puppetry.

Extras

a) read a never-shot Firefly episode 1x15 which totally explains [livejournal.com profile] active_apathy's singed-turtle icon
b) an inside tour on Serenity (and part 2)
c) short explosion
d) Fruity Oaty Bars! (Now kill!)
e) this Serenity trailer made by a fan which I think kicks the official trailer's bums

and, of course, a parody: The Mosquito (Sinners!)

Really, really should do something productive.

Oh! Tanned. A bit.

Euros, credits and platinum
Written April 6, 2006

After having watched “Arial” for the upteenth time, I have learnt that: )

So knowing how much medicine, a cow and bail costs, how much does a night with a whore cost? A whole night, not one lay or one blow job. Kinda like an all-you-can-eat thing. How much, people? I suck at monetary calculations.

I’ve got some 7300 words of fic now, and though technically some 5300 of them could be read in one go, I want to put a little bar scene between the two pre-whoring scenes. And no, I’m not writing whore-smut.

The best thing yet, though, is that I think I’m getting the scenes in order. The plot isn’t breathtakingly on-the-edge-of-your-seat. Personally I think it needs an extra oomf. But then, I spend hours writing one page, so obviously it’s going to seem a bit slow paced to me.

Cut for roommates and German movies from hell )

Work, work, work
Written: April 3, 2006
Music: SMcL *not* depressing *anything* in sight

My first day at work involved no work whatsoever. Yay?

Re-watching a clip from the upcoming movie Slither, I noticed that )

Trying to get back into writing-gear, I thought I’d share how I organize my WIP’s. Often, I jot down some lines of dialogue, some points to mention and group them all under one scene or, if that’s impossible, under one character. When I’ve managed to write a scene, sometimes I write comments after or in it, mainly focusing on continuity.

Oh, this “how we write” is kinda what [livejournal.com profile] bdwriters is about. I would be so much more active in comm’s if I had access to the net on week-days. Sigh.

Here’re two as samples:

1) Jayne’s haggling at the brothel:

“How long do you want?” said Floyd.

“How much for the night?”

“Forty-five.” 25 gets you one cow!

2) After writing a scene where Mal stops a confrontation between Jayne and another crew member then reassures Kaylee:

Oh god, J/M and M/K all in one scene. Especially with the M going into J’s bunk… Make M angry and hard again°. See upcoming dialogue bits: “that depends” and “you ain’t been nothin’ but trouble”.

° Oh sweet god, don’t reread this after thinking about J/M…

Have just written a bit where the whores are chatting about their past customers. Have never had so much fun in my life.

PS: Rome on television )

* I don’t often swear but I love this word. I don’t even care if it isn’t a word. It is to me.
bending_sickle: (Default)
On a completely different note: if you’re offered 25* for one cow on a rinky-dink planet, how much would you be expected to pay for one whole night with a whore at the docks of a commercial planet?

For that matter, would I be insane if I said the price for one night was approximately the same as the cost of a full round of bullets?

Or would I be cheap?

Now I'm not one to like a southern drawl overmuch, being more of the Irish-appreciatin' type, but is it bad that I love it when Nathan Fillion drawls? And he does just that in Slither, which looks not so much scary or gory as much as funny.

So what's one truly bad thing of being all packed?

I can't watch Firefly.

The one bad thing about my hormones right now?

I *really* want to watch Firefly

Because Jayne* is hot.

At first I was all over poor tortured Captn. Tight Pants (i.e. Mal), butif I had to chose... Well, I'd chose both.

I think I'd better stop typing now, before I'm overpowered by the lust.

* That guy there, in the icon, with the gun?

And since we're on hot guys and completely avoiding the whole "leaving on a jet plane" thing, last night I watched that movie where Brad Pitt's a sexy Irish IRS guy. It's Brad, he's blond, and he's irish. *melts*

I also watched Dead man walking* and while Sean Penn looks nice (not keen on the goatee, though), he'll never look better than in Eastwood's Mystic River. But that's just because he had the sexiest tatoo in the world: it ran up his spine and across his shoulders.

* Warning: film may cause viwer to weep profusely and constantly.

Watched Just like heaven with dad today too, and it was actually quite nice and funny.

I promise to write a coherent and organized post. And preferrably interesting.

I don't, however, promise to cease pimping cool stuff.

Over the past few days I've watched 8 episodes of Firefly and half-filled a large suitcase with winter stuff. Am not looking forward to the whole "pack everything you own and can't live without for an indefinate period of time" moments comming up.

More on my life )

Speaking of computers, I've been planning to save and burn some of the music video's people have made with Buffy or Angel clips, but fear that'll take ages.

Apparently in either Velvet Goldmine or the 2000 version of Jesus Christ: Superstar, there's some serious slash. And Ewan McGregor.

And for more cartoons, not SW related, I present to you the cute Boobies. (They're birds, you gutter-lover! ...Although the pun's the whole thing.)

Want to learn how to cuss fictionally? Go to wikipedia. Although am upset Nadsat isn't in there.

The Serentity crew swears in Chinese, and now you can too! Translations here.

Now for the Firefly pimping:

Holy F'g God. I just bought Firefly's 4 DVDs. Am extatic, terrified and apprehensive at the obscene amounts of cash I've used today. (That includes Chicago ticket.)

OMG.

Ironic, isn't it, that I haven't bought Buffy or Angel first? But this is a little thing, only 14 eps, and not 22 eps in a normal, non-cancelled, season. Besides, with these 14, they're all there, no pesky missing seasons.

Someday, though, the other Whedon jewels will be mine, but when I actually have money. (I'm considering this a graduation present, although my parents don't even understands what this is.)

OK, still shocked, but am suddenly starving.

O.o

(Still shocked.)

My computer can't pick up the internet anymore, which sucks, so I'm using dad's, which I'm hating, and everything comes up in Spanish, which is annoying. Plus his computer has an extra-wide screen wich bugs me.

The Nova Scotia trip was a blast, but I won't describe it in detail because I've already done so too many times and really, the people who'd read this already know. So, some highlights:

Saw doe and fawn, procupine, black bear, assorted snakes and turtles (including being in a canoe with 4 turtles, 2 recovering drownees)
Met Jo's extended family, who are all really sweet and fun
Discovered exactly what an outhouse is like (couldn't stop thinking about Granny Weatherwax and the badger in the privy)

There are more things, but am slightly too upset to write them.

Right now I have to get tickets to Chicago and Spain and buy a computer, so that's a lot of computer and internet work I'm going to have to do on this computer. I'm going to ask dad to try fixing the internet connection again.

Oh, and I have to pack my entire life into 2 suitcases and a trolley. Again.

Dad's taking vacation (2 weeks). At first he wanted to go see Alvaro, but I repeated incessantly that that couldn't happen becuase he's busy, very busy. Then he wanted to go to Mexico City (fat chance I'll go with him). Now he want to go to Spain for a week. FIrst, with what money. Second, where is he going to stay? Granny's? Ha! See if my mom'll take that, esp. with Grandma's health acting up again. So now he wants to take little trips to lakes, like the 1000 islands that mom wanted to go to and we never did.

Honestly, dad's got the worst timing. And the worst sense, but let me stop there.

So no, not the peachiest girl in town.

Plus side:
Saw Cirque du Soleil's Corteo last night
Am seriously considering buying Firefly's 15 episodes on DVD (tryed taping it last ngiht but instead they played some serious of a man trying to investigate his past life)
May just buy GBS's Up and Dido's last CD
May also buy the two books after Sister Light, Sister Dark by JYolen and photocopy one story.

D'you know there's a SF convention here in TO and that Trek people and JMarsters (!) are going to be there? Not going, obviously, but it would'a been nice.
