Books from Boots' and country lanes*
Jul. 19th, 2005 08:35 pm* From "Westminster Abbey" by John Betjeman, found here.
I was made to memorize this poem in 10th grade along with others. Still remember them and am trying to increase repertoire of memorized poems. (TMuch easier when poem is put to song. Thanks Loreena McK.)
Quick recap since last entry:
Finished TESl course, did exam. Think went weell; will pick up exam and coursework later this week.
Friday went to Katarina's place in King City. Due to mix-up of metro exits, spent one hour under overpass staring at pigeons feed their fledglings until we worked out that she was at the other, identical, overpass.
Lovely countryside and not very developed area. Lots of rich people loving there with ginormous houses. Watered plants and walked dog of said rich people. (They bleedin' moved an entire house from Scotland! In one piece. And it's full-out wood and really really old. Their back yard is like a football field. I could seriously start a vinyard there.)
Saturday was her younger brother Luke's birthday (thriteen) so at midnight we went to Indigo and picked up his copy of HPotter. I didn't end up getting a copy because there was bound to be a discount in another store (and there was. Except then there was an even cheaper discount at Costco, which sucks.) Kat and I slept 4 hours then went to buy groceris, make a cake and take the older of Kat's younger brothers to his sweet, sweet job at a Jewish Golf club. Then we dropped the birhtday kid and co at an amusement park, took a power nap, then took all the boys to a Chinese restaurant. Except it wasn't. it was a massive buffet restaurant where they offered abs. every type of food, from pizza to coquilles St. Jacques to spring rolls. We then watched "10 things I hate about you" until the wee hours.
Sunday was spent lying around (watched "Wedding crashers"). Monday was equally uneventfull.
We did talk a lot, though, about our plans for the future and about family and how messed up it can be. Monday morning we had a great discussion about our respective mother's and their relationships with our dads. Slightly depressing.
We also spent the whole weekend urging Luke to read HPotter faster. I read though most of "Tuesday's with Morrie" by Mitch Album. Very nice.
Have now read through 200-odd pages of HPotter in 2 sittings. Have also bought ticket for Ottawa on Thurday. Think may go to watch "Howl's Moving Castle" this week. Poss. even before "Charlie". (Sacrilage, I know, but damn does Wonka look freaky creepy. And not in a cool way.)
Also went to optometrist. Apparently astigmatism and fatigue improved so eye actually better, prescription-wise, than in 2003 or earlier. Shocked. Although upon explanation, really hasn't changed that must. Hell, as long as my eyesight isn't getting worse... Actually, no. I like this improvement thing. Keep it up till 20/20 vision.
Confession: Have read last paragraph of HPotter. And flipped through last chapter. Have huge spoiler up my sleeve. Am armed and dangerous :)
(I can just see it now, me threatening little kids and grown-ups a like as they hops about, fingers in their ears and humming the Oscar Myer Weaner song, then screamming shrilly on a mountain-top "Knowledge is power!". Except most of them have already finished the book by now. Bugger.)
