Random Points Along the Sickle Line:
  • I'm currently reading House Rules by Jodi Piccoult (now with podcast!), and I've reached the point where I'm just devouring the thing. It's a really interesting story about a teenage with Asperger's syndrome who's accused of murder. Although I'm rarely into crime novels, this one has a large dash of forensic science as the main character is fascinated by the subject and that aspect of it is one I can really get into. Curiously, I'm also following the law aspect of it quite well and even enjoying it, even though I'm not usually into the intricacies of courts and lawyers and judges and prosecuters and so on. I keep trying to figure out the whodunnit of the novel, much like the other book of hers I've read, Plain Truth. I'm almost at the Big Reveal part of the novel \o/

  • I've gotten all five of the fanmixes for Time We Saw a Miracle all set up except for the final file editing and posting. That was a lot of work, but I'm really happy with them.

  • There's four people from whom I'm waiting to hear from, and have been waiting for going on a month now. One I know takes a long time to respond, so it's no big deal. Another I haven't heard from in ages and I'm starting to get worried. A third got back in touch with me early this month, which pleased me greatly, but hasn't responded to my gleeful response. And the four cut me off cold-turkey, or so it seems, but at any rate the ball's in their court. I'm tired of people dropping me like that.

  • The week hasn't been fantastic. Nothing productive was actually achieved, drama was had, and German kicked my ass. However, on the plus side? There's people I can count on, and those people are my darlings. Except [livejournal.com profile] seschat. She's my squishy. ♥

In other news, I wrote a letter in German. I think I also broke the word order and a couple declinations. Help? Point and laugh?

Darling, what did you want to say in the first sentence? There's no such word as 'tannen' and I can't make sense of what it was supposed to be. One way or another there ought to be a zu between the 'tannen' and 'zwingen'.

(Aritcle isn't necessarily needed here, it sounds better without it.) Also, the possesive pronoun before 'Unterschied' is an unusual construction and I generally would advise you against using it, but it can make sense in context, so. Be careful with that, is all. ;)

The last sentence is correct. :)

Ooh, I always wanted to try Jodi Picoult – her Nineteen Minutes was really big in Germany – but I never really pursued my interest in her writing. BUT MAYBE I SHOULD. :D I'm currently reading Everything You Know by Zoe Heller and revelling in the snark. :D

And the four cut me off cold-turkey, or so it seems, but at any rate the ball's in their court. I'm tired of people dropping me like that.

*huggles up to you* THEIR LOSS! Because you = ❤! But yeah, I know what you mean, I am usually chasing after people I adore like some kind of demented puppy, which is PATHETIC since they're clearly doing fine without me, and what is worse, I can't seem to stop. *throws hands in the air* Pent-up frustration, lalala! :D Get me my crown and bat-cape!

Fanmixes ftw!! \o/

*glomps* *smishes* *cradles your hand* *loves forever* ♥

In the first sentence, I was trying desperately to say, "How dare you make me do my job?!" Obviously I failed there...

Yeah, the "meinem Unterschied" thing refers to my explaining in a previous part that I consider there to be a difference between using Sie and using a Sie-like tone of respect. Like in English, you can say "you" to everyone, but that doesn't mean the register (aha! I finally remembered the word!) is the same.

Ack! Prepositions get me again! Thank you so much for helping me with German! *snuggles mightily*

Also, I was wondering, with "Was möchtest du?" I'm trying to say, "What did you want?" but I think with the umlaut it's more of a "What would you want?" Because möchten is a polite form of want, right? So should it be "wolltest" instead, to get the whole rudeness vibe?

As for Jodi Picoult, her novels are addictive. The two I've read I've jsut devoured. I like how she writes the emotional and relationship part of the characters, and as I said in the post, she made law not boring, so major points.

Yeah, see, I do the chasing around after people too, and sometimes I just stop and say, "Look, if it's always me whose starting the friendship-ball rolling, maybe they don't want to hear from me."

Of course, I once mused and angsted about this happening in a particular friendship on this LJ (basically saying, "I feel like I value our friendship more than she does") and that was the one time she decided to read my journal (I think her friend googled her name and found my post and told her, so it was more of a vanity-checking of my LJ than a "let's see how she's doing" thing) and then she got upset that I was upset about my valuing our friendship but feeling left out by her. This made me go o.0 and then she de-friended me on Facebook - cue more o.0 - and that was that.

People are weird.

Oh, and also? FANMIXES READY FOR POSTING OMG. \o/ *smiiiiish*

I'm still not sure if I get the sentence – is it perhaps "How dare you tell me how to do my job?" or something along these lines? It just doesn't make sense to me otherwise? But for what it's worth, the translation verbatim would be:

"Wie kannst du es wagen, mich zu zwingen, meinen Job/meine Arbeit zu machen?"

Don't worry, "Was möchtest du?" is already a pretty rude thing to say to a customer, and "Was willst du?" even more so. It sounds incredibly rude, especially with the informal addressing – it has an undertone of "and now go the fuck away" to it, whereas "Was möchtest du?" still can pass for acceptable even if being rude, which is what I think you were going for. :)

You're very much welcome, Schätzchen! ♥

Hey, don't go around dissing law, I might just end up studying it! Maybe. Probably not. But it's the principle of the thing! :D

People are weird and they suck. That's all. But, you know, if we're both the "chasing after people like a demented puppy" type, we might just work out perfectly, don't you think? ;) ♥

FANMIXES!!!! \o/

Okay, so the "How dare you" thing is basically my interpretation of the vender saying, "Mensch, kannst du nicht eine Hose mit Preisschild mehmen? Jetzt muss ich extra in die Abteilung rennen und fragen." so it very much is a "oh noes, you're making me do that thing I'm being paid for!". So thanks very much! What you wrote is what I was trying to say :) I'd never even heard of "zwingen" and there were way too many verbs in that sentence for me to juggle into the appropriate order. \o/ Thankee!

Alrighty, möchtest can stay. I'm translating from the Spanish, "Que querías?" because it drives me up the wall that they greet you at a store with that nowadays and that's what my letter is supposed to be about. (Situations when I've been told du instead of Sie and so on.)

Oh no, I'm not dissing the law at all. I just can't follow the whole mess of "we can't do this because of law x but we can totally do it if we say it's because of law y and hey, precendent z says we can have pink elephants in the room but subclause t says they have to be drunk at the time. When I try to watch Law and Order and things like that I just end up very frustrated about how everyone's always jumping through loopholes or trying to contort themselves and the law to make it apply. But that is totally on me for not being able to follow it, not law.

*chases after you like a demented puppy* *puppy!glomp*

*grins* Ah, now I get it! ♥ You're welcome, sweetheart!

Our Spanish prof keeps on telling us that people only ever rarely use usted, are much less formal and all... however, my politeness-dar forbids such wording as, "Was möchtest du?" or "Que querías?" I'd much rather overuse the usted than look like an idiot. (Has a downside, too, though, I come off much too formal at times.)

I will be forever convinced that law is boring, but sssh. Can't go dissing about myself, now can I? *grins* Progress made regarding the Question: zero. FUCK THIS. Have I studied, have I done shit? No, of course not. Ngaaah, someone needs to kick my ass or I feel this whole graduation thing might take a turn for the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad, indeed. But...it feels like this feat to start working, I haven't done half-bad with practically minimal effort so far. I NEED TO STOP SABOTAGING MYSELF. :|

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO THE FIRST FANMIX AND LOVING IT. *___* ♥

No one our ages ever uses Usted anymore AND I WEEP over this. I just can't say "tu" to everyone no matter what, and by gods, if they make me, I will be extremely formal in everything else that comes out of my mouth.

*surreptitiously kicks Question in the privates* Sorry about that, darling. *huggles* And as much as I get that you feel you need a kick in the pants about it, don't look at me for that. I've just got pom poms. (Frankly, I need a kick in the pants too, regarding job searching, of which I've done fuck-all, thankyouverymuch. And my mom reads articles and sees news reports about how Germany is apparently just full of job opportunities. Funny how they never say in which industry, but it makes her Look at me, if you get my drift.)

FANMIX APPROVAL FTW! (Now it's your turn to post 'em ♥)
