Parents gone as of early this mornig, though I had to say goodbye yesterday. As always, there was some tears, some bitterness and then some last minute phone calls regarding the apparent invisibility of a package mom had given me.

Trying not to dwell too much.

So instead, let me teach you about the grizzle-polar bread hybrid. Or, well, point the way. Y'all can teach yourselves.

I will, however, tell that I have again struck gold wqith the Chinese because wikipedia is wonderful and has a Wiktionary, a Pinyin page and a whole page on Chinese, as in words and words in Chinese with their definitions. I can´t believe I´m doing this...

Immensely greatful to [livejournal.com profile] earthwhatwere for clearing up the injection-thing with Mal on Serenity. There is one thing that doesn't quite make sense, though. After Mal gets the cocky little smile beatten out of him by the Operative, he walks into the common room rolling down his sleeve. That just screams "recent injection". Now, sure, he got beat up and all, had some bruises and cuts, bloody nose etc. But would any of that require an injection? Painkillers would be either pills or a sort of "apply anywhere" thing (see Kaylee in Serenity episode or Jayne in War Stories). So the innoculating theory flies for the first time, but not quite for the second. Mur?

Love how some lines in Serenity are taken exactly from the series. (Like "not born a Shepherd", "petty thief" (outtake), "always loved to dance", etc.)

Tomorrow I have my French presentation on Marc Levy's "Et si c'était vrai" novel. Ugh. And on Wednesday, I'm joining the flat-mates in watching football. (Double ugh for the football, kinda-yay for the socializing). There will be pizza. Have to call Christina, see if we can go swimming sometime, and on Wednesday, Monica's cousin's neighbour is going to call me so we can chat. (She did Biology too, so we'll see...) Might also try and get in touch with the super-social girl that works in the hospital with MCarmen who said she'd like to meet me. Must socialize, damnit.

Oh, and boondoggle (n) means "A waste of time and/or money; a pointless activity. ". I just thought that was the most wonderful word in the world.

And that appears to be that.

Time to be responsible and catch up on [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes.

Have decided to be completely random about topic title. Because I can.

It might be what some would call fahng-tzong fung-kwong duh jeh* but I´ve just spent the entire day bored out of my mind. Not even discovering, via metaquotes, that somewhere there´s Jayne/River/Kaylee fics made my day.

(And let me add that I love metaquotes, not only because it´s like the news, only funny and about stuff I´m actually interested in, but because it literally makes me LOL**. And that is a very rare and precious gift.)

There´s this meme going on about which fictional characters you´d love to punch. [livejournal.com profile] patsyrant voices what K and I´ve been thinking all these years:

Louis from INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE )

I realize I haven´t really talked about life on the other side of the pond. Letsee... We´re practically drowning thanks to a week of rain, the ceilings dripping in the kitchen, people stop and drink coffee all the time (which stopped being a good thing after a while), baskets in the supermarket are really trolleys (*curses years as a student lugging around heavy basket*), people smoke a hell of a lot more (and it´s not illigal to do so in public closed places till January) and all the streets are old.

I haven´t been out much, have I?

Oh, one last thing. I´ve been writing a fanfic based on The Planet of the Apes, Burton-version, since it came out (2001). It´s nowhere near finished, and I´ve cringed at many a chapter and said, "Total rewrite, this one". *But* I´ve finally finished a Chapter. And now all I have to do is fill in a bunch of gaps, totall fix a "But he can´t do that now...or possibly ever...but he has to" situation, and rewrite everything I wrote in first-year.

At least NaNoWriMo´s have a deadline. This thing just never *dies*.
(Plus, there´s the whole, "Not mine" aura on everything in my fic. Sigh.)

* "a knot of self-indulgent lunacy" Kudos to this site. Yes, I´ll be doing this often.

** An example of both:
bbcnewsworld says "A live, adult giant squid is captured on film in the depths of the Pacific ocean for the first time."
[livejournal.com profile] groovemerchant responds with: "Our dark Lord awakens!"

Putonghua

My uncles travel a lot, and on one of their recent trips, they went to China. Imagine my joy when I discover a conversation guide for travellers of Mandarin. That Mandarin is spoken in Firefly might add to the fun.

Mandarin (putonghua = common speech; zhongwen = centres´ language; hanyu = Han´s language)

Written in pinyin and phonetically in parentheses. Fancy-shmancy lines and squiggles on letters wn´t be written for pinyin. Tough.

Firefly curse of the day: gou cao de hun dan (dog-humping bastards) Brought to you by michmak (on fanfiction.net) aka [livejournal.com profile] writwritewrote. Recommend her series Little Things, a Jayne/River.

I promise to write a coherent and organized post. And preferrably interesting.

I don't, however, promise to cease pimping cool stuff.

Over the past few days I've watched 8 episodes of Firefly and half-filled a large suitcase with winter stuff. Am not looking forward to the whole "pack everything you own and can't live without for an indefinate period of time" moments comming up.

More on my life )

Speaking of computers, I've been planning to save and burn some of the music video's people have made with Buffy or Angel clips, but fear that'll take ages.

Apparently in either Velvet Goldmine or the 2000 version of Jesus Christ: Superstar, there's some serious slash. And Ewan McGregor.

And for more cartoons, not SW related, I present to you the cute Boobies. (They're birds, you gutter-lover! ...Although the pun's the whole thing.)

Want to learn how to cuss fictionally? Go to wikipedia. Although am upset Nadsat isn't in there.

The Serentity crew swears in Chinese, and now you can too! Translations here.

Now for the Firefly pimping:

Oh, and get them planks (and Cptn. Sparrow) for Talk like a Pirate Day.

One last thing, for those HPotter fans. There's [livejournal.com profile] potterpuffs and [livejournal.com profile] potterpuff_fans. Just adorable Potter pictures.
