Bro's in Chicago (USA), which means that to get a Visa to go live there I'd need to already have a job, but not living there already reduces my chances of getting a job, so it's this big messy circle of not going to happen.

In related news, any horrible things I should know about Birmingham or Manchester? Kinda narrowed it down to those two cities.

They're both a bit rough, but then so are the majority of UK cities really :/ It's where you are in the city. Manchester hasn't been bombed by the IRA recently but it was on fire a short while back. Birmingham has some racial tensions going on. Apart from that they're a bit far from me to give the real ins and outs, I've only visited.

OMG I've made my country sound terrible. Manchester has cool shopping and rock clubs and it's easy to get over the border into Wales, and Birmingham has a massive Asian population so you might be able to get those mangoes you like there.

D: Oh crap, right, those things happen too. I've just been going through a lot of cities' wikis, checking out their economy, main sectors and unemployment shenanigans. I figured since they're big cities with universities and whatsit, I'd have a good chance of finding some sort of job.

I think the easiest jobs to get at the moment are in telesales, and a lot of the places seem to know that people are only there until they find something better. It's annoying work and they dick people around a lot, but it pays rent and such until something else comes along. Virgin call-centres have the best reputation. A university town might have more opportunities for less soul-destroying things like bookshops tho. Manchester and Birmingham aren't really terrible, I was just responding to the 'horrible things' part of your question.

Ugh yes telesales. I've come to terms that it will have to be an option (if a hellish one). And I hear there's these magical things called job centres? Do I seriously just basically walk up and say, "Here is my CV, can you help me please find a job, k thnx?"

Thanks for the info and the support and the huggles. I'm still very much panicking and freaking out about this. Hell, I was even when it was just an idea of something that I wanted to do and not, y'know, because of impending homelessness because of insane fuckery, which kind of puts a damper on the whole experience.

Oh god yes, job centres. To be honest it didn't even occur to me that they'd be anything other than normal, even decent sized villages have them here. Maybe a good sign? And yeah, you register and you give them your CV, and they'll help you, they've got targets to hit so they want people in work. And there's usually touch-screen computers in the main lobby with all the jobs listed too, you just press options until it's narrowed down - what type of work, how far you can travel, how many hours, that kind of thing - and then you print out a list. With some of the jobs you'll need to get more info from the counter, but some will have phone numbers on your print-out so you're good to go. Or they have JobseekersPlus online too if you want to take a shufty. Temping agencies can be pretty good here too, in all the ones near us you're looking at six month placements instead of three/four days.

Also Lana's reminded me that with some jobs here, especially university and council ones, they legally have to advertise through jobseekers and the employment news even if they have an internal candidate who's definitely going to be promoted into it. It's some idiot scheme the government thought would be clever but in the real world it just leaves people getting their hopes up for no reason. But one way of working with it is to mention in your cover letter that if a position in a lower grade comes open you'd appreciate being considered for that too, that way if the promotee is leaving a space (and they often are) you've got your foot in the door for that job early.
