When I was in third grade, I once wrote an essay about a man, possibly a Lord, and his wife, whom I titled as "mistress". I thought I was using the word correctly to mean "his missus", but got buskhacked and told that that word only ever meant "lover in adulterous situation".

But Word Reference (or more correctly, Sideduck) totally redeems me:

Mrs is the abbreviation of the no-longer-used word «Mistress» as the female equivalent of «Mister». With the abolition of slavery, Mistress has been replaced by Missus, but the abbreviation remains Mrs.

Maybe the details aren't quite right, but the basic concept of me being right certainly is.

While we're on linguistics, ever heard of the phrase behind the sofa? (And no, not in the "I found Jesus! He was behind the sofa the whole time" way.) It's thanks to media commentary of Dr Who.

Woot! on the redemption for the use of 'mistress' :)

I have actually never seen an episode of Dr. Who... my explanation is that the opening to the show used to creep the hell out of me, and to this very day I can still remember the theme song!! Now I'm actually kinda curious of what it was all about... *goes and does some research*

I'd never even *heard* of Dr. Who until NGaiman wrote about it on his blog. I've only watched a few ep so far, but I highly recommend "A Girl in the Fireplace" (PArt 1 here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cti6qOISfws)), which is my fave ep so far. The Doctor gets drunk, so that should quell the fear-factor a bit. ;)

Just finished watching "A Girl in the Fireplace", it was so good! I think it is one of the newer ones, because the one I remember was much much older. I like the Doctor in this one :)

(Those android guys were a little scary even though I kinda felt bad for them at the end)
