Life: Spent the whole day working on the References section. From home, because I didn't set the alarm on last night and I suck. Work was achieved, at least.

Nano: 354 words behind. The distance is decreasing, but omg, kill me now.

How to pump-up the word count: instead of saying that clothes were found for Icarus and he then got dressed, say that Chip and Saunders argue, Agatha finds clothes and then Chip proceeds to toss each item one by one. It's given me 700 words. (Don't tell anyone.)

Icarus' shade of eye-colour is somewhat like this butterfly or the Indigo Bunting only more. Or, y'know, whatever outlandish things I can describe them as.

The first item was a pair of balled-up black socks. Chip tossed them to Icarus without warning, hoping he’d fumble trying to catch them or that he’d miss entirely and scramble around for the socks, anything natural.

No such luck. Icarus hardly blinked at the sight of the socks flying towards his face, snapping them out of the air in one sure move with his eyes still on Chip’s.

Fine, thought Chip childishly, be freakish.

The next item was a pair of baggy black pants – Well, that’s plus one for colour-coordination and another plus one for size-leeway consideration. Bright kid. – but Chip only shook them out and lay them over his arm. Icarus stood waiting quietly with the socks in his hands, undoubtably expecting him to throw the pants like he had the socks but not sparing a glance for the pants. Judging from his snap-and-grab talent for fists and socks, though, Chip figured he didn’t really need to focus on any soon-to-be-airborn item in order to catch it.

Chip jut his chin out towards the socks in Icarus’ hands. “On with socks,” he said, leaving out the second part of that charming military rhyme out of respect for Agatha. It seemed to take Icarus a moment to decipher that statement, but then he slowly unrolled the socks and stretched one out.

Icarus bent neatly at the waist in a pose that would make yoga teachers applaud, one sock in a fist, the other dangling from long fingers. He didn’t even wobble once as he lifted his foot and started putting it on. The fact that Icarus started dressing with his left food seemed odd to Chip, but then his scale for weirdness had been given a thorough beating that day and could not be trusted.

As Icarus was rolling the first sock up over his ankle, Chip heard Saunders gasp behind him. It took him a moment to realize what had shocked the old man, as focused as he was on Icarus’ strange behavior. The man’s back, so straight and pale and textured with jutting vertebrae poking up under the skin, so familiar to Chip after wiping blood off of it for hours, was whole. There was no sign of the two infected wounds that were sure to been the death of Icarus. There was no scab, no scar, no hint of a line anywhere between the shoulderblades and spinal column.

This wasn’t natural. This went beyond the unnaturalness of Chip’s current life, with its cities full of rage-induced zombies and their maroon auras. That kind of weird he could fly with, waving a hand in the general direction of science and fuck the rest. This, however, was… It was a slap in the face – to science, to the real world, to Chip’s sanity, something.

Unless of course some nuclear plant had exploded and given people superpowers and Icarus was the fortunate mutant result. Chip’s mind ran through that thought again and shrugged helplessly. It’d been a long day.
