...this was Icarus drowning.*
Nano: Still working with a word buffer. Angel is given the alias of Icarus, because obvious symbolism is obvious, and Very Blue Eyes. He's doing poorly on the consciousness front, though. Chip's not being so damn paranoic, which is nice.
I'm still on the fence on whether this is Castiel and we're in the Supernatural apocalyptic future of The End - or rather, a few years in the past in that future, which is still the future for our present. (Wibley-wobbly, timey-wimey.) On the one hand, nothing I have so far is explicitly Supernatural, and the basic concepts I've got for the next parts aren't either. I mean, it's basically Chip and co going off to find the local military base of Apocalyptic Resistance where they join as your average grunt. The angel may get his memory back, Chip may die horrifically to end the novel, but yeah, not Supernatural.
On the other hand, this could be Castiel who's lost his Grace and his memory, who is partly-human now and dispirited (but not yet an orgy-loving, drug-doing schmuck). The military base is that run by Future!Dean, who's horrifically broken because Sam said yes. At the moment I am failing to see how this changes things but...uh...it does.
I guess I'm just conflicted because while the ideas for the fallen angel and Chip were mine, and the "aw hell, just put them together" idea also was, the whole thing didn't coalesce until I saw it through the Supernatural lenses. Even though the universe isn't central to the story, and the apocalyptic setting and resistance camp is one we see in many, many other plots arode the globe, it just feels... It's like the show's gotten its grubby little hands on the ideas and smudged some things and now I can't not see it in that context and feel I'm betraying it if I don't say so.
So now I don't know whether to explicitly shout out that it's the Supernatural universe we're in, even though it totally doesn't show, yo (so please don't sue!) or if it's okay to just plod along with the inspirational image of Castiel being Icarus even though he isn't.
Plus, I'd kinda really, really like for this novel to be one-hundred-percent mine in every legal sense. Because, you know, that'd be nice.
Also, Word Spellcheck totally fails at recognizing "Icarus". Word, you ignorant foo'!

“Agatha wants to call him Icarus, on account of the falling, if she can’t call him an angel. I tell her she’s got no cause giving men new names, but it sure does help move the conversation along. There’s only so many ways you can say, ‘the wounded man upstairs’.”
“Icarus, huh?” said Chip with a disbelieving smile as he sat down on the edge of the bed, dropping his things at his feet. “Big mythology fan, your Agatha?” That was actually two questions in one and Chip hoped Saunders picked up on that.
“I tell her stories to pass the time, that’s all. And she’s hardly mine – used to live down the street aways, Samantha from 103 would babysit her – but I guess I’ll have to do.”
The man, or angel, or ancient Greek fool, whoever he was, stirred under Saunders’ ministrations. The old man wet the rag again, this time dribbling some water into the younger man’s mouth. Icarus swallowed weakly and, once Saunders had repeated the procedure two more times, opened his eyes.
They were the kind of blue that Chip would, in other times, have sworn could not be real, could not be natural, and yet here they were in a time when coloured contacts, hair gel, retainers, flashy shirts, and hell even deodorant were a thing of the past, unnecessary or unattainable or plainly bulls-eye suicidal.
Those impossibly-blue eyes, the blue of paint samples and over-saturated flower photographs, drifted to Saunders’ face and then to Chips, then simply drifted aimlessly until the man closed his eyes again. He seemed slightly more alert now, though, more together, eyebrows twitching towards each other as he tried to shift under the blankets.
Saunders’ cast him a meaningful ‘See what I mean?’ look at Chip, who nodded in return.
“Alright son,” said Saunders gently, patting a shaking hand through Icarus’ hair. “Let’s see if we can’t get some nourishment in you.” He dropped the wet rag onto the bed and shook out three white pills from the Extra-Strength Relief bottle, then dug out the broth cubes. With a spoon crushed the pills before dissolving them, along with the broth cubes, in the soup bowl with a touch of water. He turned to Chip as he stirred, saying, “After this I’ll show you his wounds – the ones on his back, I mean. I don’t think I’ve done a terribly good job of them.”
“I’ll help you,” said Chip, and for fleeting moment he felt he really meant it.

Date: 2009-11-07 04:28 pm (UTC)IMO it's okay to let things coaelsce under the lens of a fandom. What makes it yours or not is whether or not you... well, make it yours.
Like, Chainsaw from Downside began as a thinly veiled import of Angelus from Buffy. It's why he's called Chainsaw: favourite torture implement. But he grew into a completely different character, and even though there are still some superficial similarities, he really is mine now.
idk what my point is exactly. Uh. Your story can be original if you write it that way? I don't think you needed me to tell you that. XD

Date: 2009-11-11 08:26 pm (UTC)Yeah, I figured I was making it mine and that was okay, but I just kept feeling so guilty over it, like I owed the show for the coalescence of my inspiration. It may not show, but in my head it's in the fandom. *sigh* That's what Author's Notes and Acknowledgement are for, I guess.
