The Year 2007: Recap Meme, via [livejournal.com profile] apiphile's post

1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
In chronological order:

- Had my first night of jet-lag!insomnia.
- Got my first betas, wrote and posted my first finished fanfic (All Things Copper).
- Babysat (including my first wiping-of-bums, breaking-up-of-fights) and then got laid off.
- Bought alcohol for personal consumption (Bacardi Lemon Breezer).
- Watched porn. Was not impressed.
- Watched someone die, went to a wake, went to a funeral.
- Made my way through a country I’d never been in, alone.
- Went to the Netherlands, slept in youth hostels, started a Master’s program, used the stats program R, got soaked biking, ate raw herring, wore clogs, explored a waste water treatment plant, saw a prostitute, failed a language exam, (pre-emptive) wrote a wikipage.
- Desperately wanted to kiss a guy.
- Made my first only-through-internet friends, and (pre-emptive) met said internet-friend(s).

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
The first rule of New Years is there are no New Yea’s Resolutions. There may be resolutions made during the course of the year, however. I kept some of them for a brief period.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nah, that was last year.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes. I still haven’t written about it in any of my diaries. I should.

5. What countries did you visit?
Canada, Spain, The Netherlands and Milan Airport, Italy.

6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
To quote [livejournal.com profile] apiphile: "Time. Time to read, time to write, time for myself, time to SLEEP."
And friends. I hear those are nice.

7. What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
August 11-13: see #4
August 23: buh-bye Spain (sqeak-a squeak)
September 4: homelessness ended (hooray!)
November 30: partay (woo-hoo!)
Dec 23: pre-emptive etching-upon-memory

8. What was your biggest achievement of this year?
Not breaking down over-much August-September.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Doing stuff.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
The Mangled Toe of Woe, the Endless and Constant Sneezing and the Loss-of-Consciousness Cramps.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My 80 cent baby-blue blanket of awesome. Even more awesome because it is here, as opposed to inna-box in my uncles’ garage. In Barcelona. Far, far away. Like most of my stuff.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Elisa and Laura’s, for ensuring I actually had fun at a club.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
My own, mostly. Then there’s the creeptastic emails, which have appalled everyone.

14. Where did most of your money go?
School, rent, public transport, plane tickets. Occasionally, food.

15. What did you get really, really excited about?
Stardust
Dec 23, 2007: 12:00 pm

16. What songs will always remind you of 2007?
All those awesome songs on my favourite fanmixes.

17. Compared to this time last year, [livejournal.com profile] apiphile deleted the rest of the question. "Ooops."

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
More writing, reading, planning out of life.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Less misery-induced lethargy.

20. How will you be spending New Years Eve?
I’ll be sitting on the couch with my family, sipping Cava and watching the taping of this year’s Spanish countdown of the celebrations at La Puerta del Sol (Madrid), marvelling at the staying power of Ramon "Ramonchu" Garcia’s cape and trying not to choke on grapes as we snarf ‘em down at each bell-toll announcing midnight. (Spanish tradition: eat one grape per bell-toll for all 12 tolls bringing in the New Year and, if you don’t choke, it’ll bring you luck. Oh, and wear red.)

21. Did you fall in love in 2007?
I fell in lust with a fictional character. Does that count?

22. How many one-night stands?
Big fat zero. For any number of stands.

23. What was your favourite TV programme?
Heroes and Dr Who. Honourable mention: Life on Mars, which in its entirety is shorter that one single season of American TV and still kicks all manner of ass.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nope. Though the hate-constant of one is still constant. (Throughout my life, I think there’s only one person I could say I hate – though it’s really not even that, just a great bitter disappointment at the massive betrayal – and I don’t think I’ll ever forgive her.)

25. What was the best book you read?
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. The second book I read this year (preceded by The Z War, which rocks all sorts of socks), and the first book to make me bawl uncontrollably once finished. I don’t think I could bear read it again, but it’s gorgeous. (Forget You Ever Had a Daughter is now second on that made-me-cry and I-could-never-reread list.)

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Fanmixes! My favourites: Dr Who (The Master): My Evil Plan to Save the World by [livejournal.com profile] charmax; Harry Potter (Minerva McGonnagall): How to Fight for Hogwarts by [livejournal.com profile] faders; Heroes (Sylar): Death on Two Legs by [livejournal.com profile] quicksilvermad.
Also, Jonathan Coutlon.

27. What did you want and get?
Barcelona go buh-bye.

28. What did you want and not get?
University residence.

29. What was your favourite film of this year?
Half Nelson / Blood Diamond / 300 / Stardust
I suck at playing favourites.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I dressed up pretty, suffered through stats, answered a handful of well-wishing phone calls, and bought myself some tiramusu. I was 24 years old.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Direction.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
Is it clean? Can you see the wrinkles? ‘Kay, good to go. Now, introducing makeup!

33. What kept you sane?
I lost that battle ages ago... But Neil Gaiman is good for me.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Zachary Quinto, who totally eclipses my Johnny Depp and Robert Carlyle phases. Besides, I fancy Quinto, whereas with Depp and Carlyle I mostly gushed over their acting, with some squee on the side. (I’m purposely not re-reading the relevant posts, so I can say this with a straight and honest face.)

35. What political issue stirred you the most?
*waves hands vaguely at USA*

36. Who did you miss?
Kathleen and Katarina, who are my dearest.

37. Who was the best new person you met?
[livejournal.com profile] lienne, who is my squishy. Followed by Elisa, who is actually available in real life for tea. Hooray for friends!

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007.
Shit happens for no reason, and it can keep on happening. (Also known as the "Why me? - Why not?" reaction.)

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Life ain't always beautiful / Sometimes it's just plain hard / Life can knock you down, it can break your heart. Life ain't always beautiful / You think you're on your way / And it's just a dead end road at the end of the day. - Gary Allen, Life Ain’t Always Beautiful

Here's to hopin' next year I'll be quoting the last verse instead.

In other news, today was another Panic! In the Bedroom and Crying! For No Reason day. It better as fucking hell just be the hormones.
