Novel Progress: Chapter 28
Current Emotion: Hungry and Tired and Going to Watch a Movie and Sleep Forever
Like a mother duck leading her troop of ducklings, Gandalf takes them up to the house, where he stops, coughs, tugs at his beard, takes off his hat, makes to put it back on again, before deciding to keep it off. “Now,” he says, turning to face the company, “our host – should he wish to help us, is named Beorn.”
“What manner of race is he?” asks Dori, eyeing the doorframe mistrustingly. It is so large, that Grace guesses you could fit a truck through the door quite comfortably. “Is he man?”
“At times,” says Gandalf with a nod. “He is a skinchanger.”
Grace shares a blank look with the younger dwarves. They seem to be as lost as she is.
Thorin, however, gives a heavy sigh, clearly understanding. “What manner of beast, then?”
Gandalf’s lips press together and his face grows grim. “A bear.”
“Wait, hang on,” says Bilbo, pushing his way towards the front of the company so he can look up at Gandalf. “A bear? You want us to seek shelter with a bear?”
“He is quite reasonable when he is a man,” Gandalf assures him, then pauses. “Well, unless we startle him. Which,” he said, raising a finger, “we shall not do, if you all do as I say.”
The penny drops. Skinchanger. “A werebear,” says Grace, staring at Gandalf, then leaning her head back to take in the immensity of the house before them. “A werebear.” She lowers her head again and understands Thorin’s sigh perfectly as she scrubs at her face with both hands. “An actual werebear.”
