“Good idea, that one,” she said, gesturing towards his feet.
Bilbo looked down at his feet self-consciously, then back at her. “What one?”
“Taking off your shoes.” Grace bent forward to unlace her boots, pulling them off with a groan. “There ye go,” she muttered, taking off her socks and wriggling her toes, “get some air, me duckies.”
“I never wear shoes.”
Grace looked up at Bilbo. “You what?”
Bilbo stuck his hands in his pockets and curled his toes. “I’m a hobbit,” he said, by way of explanation. “We don’t wear shoes.”

“I’m a – a hob – a halfling,” Bilbo stuttered, uncomfortable.
Grace had no idea what he was talking about. “Is that, like, a New Age thing? Like vegans?”
Bilbo’s face scrunched in confusion. “Ve – what? No. No, no, I’m a hobbit. It’s –” he huffed, frustrated, gesturing to himself. “It’s what I am. I’m a hobbit,” he repeated. At Grace’s blank stare, he cocked his head an instant, then turn to point to the men behind them. “Same as they’re dwarves.”
“That’s not very nice.”
