They were halfway through the woods, driving north along the road that bordered Perry Lake, when the sun finally broke out, bright and strong, through the storm clouds. Sunlight peppered the road ahead with bright spots of light and sparkled off the lake’s ripples like diamonds. Chip opened his window and leaned his head out, the air rushing into the car in bursts, making a noise like the flapping of wings. As if waiting for his cue, Saunders, Icarus, and Crowley opened their windows and the flapping turned into a rushing, washing over them all like a flowing river. At the noise, Agatha stirred awake and uncurled, her hands and feet poking Chip and Crowley as she twisted around and sat up between them.
Chip leaned his head out, taking the breeze full in the face, feeling the wind sting his cheeks as Saunders coaxed speed out of their ride. He took in a deep breath and everything smelled fresh and green, washed clean by the storm. It felt good to sit like this, watching the scenery go by, and remember that things like these – the smell of pines, the rustle of leaves, the almost-substantial shapes of clouds as they rolled across the sky – still existed.
