On the Spanish news yesterday, they were talking about how this is the Lost Generation because all us young folk starting off with our first job, or trying to find that first job, are royally screwed by the recession and how a large proportion of the unemployed are young people and how things'll suck for a good many more years and basically how I should just give up and die now. Yay.

I've looked through a hell of a lot of job sites and search engines and even things dedicated to Entry Level positions, and ever there they say things like, "Must have high school diploma or GED and 7 years experience," so where the fuck is the entry level?!? Gods, it's enough to make me cry at odd intervals, when I'm not staring glazed-eyed at the screen, reading and dismissing job advert after job advert.

Oh well, we can give up and die together, then! As I'm constantly being reminded, the only two things I can study to guarantee gainful employment sometime in the near future are either business studies or medicine; great! Who in their right mind studies languages nowadays, anyway, everyone can speak English, aye, blahblahblah nagnagnag grumblegrumble. Like I don't know!

Don't cry, love! It's not you, never you, and I can't understand how in the hell they haven't snatched you up yet. ♥

Well, at least you know that studying this or that will result in endless unemployment. I was all, "Lalala, I likes English! But that way only lies unemployment or worse, professorship. I know, Biology!" and then, "But I likes animal biology and thingies!" and from that it was just, "But not research! Or academia!" which leads to... Absolutely nothing. Biology that isn't on the small or chemical scale is, apparently, currently worthless. Damnit, I should've tried for something medical.

But here's a secret: there's a lot more things you can study that will result in employment than people tell you. Everybody focuses on the big subjects and they forget to tell you that there's things like forensics and fashion design. *sigh* Anywho, if you need any advice or insider info, I'm here for you, dear. (And English studies are totally awesome!)

Actually, I'm in denial about the fact that, no matter what I decide to study, I probably will end up unemployed and poor. ;P I won't be going for English studies per se, but I'm thinking about trying out for Translation and Simultaneous/Conference Interpreting with English and Russian. As I'm being told, however, there's no money in that either. Meh. (Although the guy from Leipzig I'm emailing with and who's currently doing the Bachelor I'm interested in claims the interpreters in spe from Leipzig have an employment rate of 100%. Should I believe this?)

There's no need for Biologists, at all? What? *has a wtf moment* Damn them, damn them! WRONG'UNS, they are. D: (But, what's wrong with research? Research is fun! ;) Also, I think you would make a monumentally cool professor, aye.)

Thank you, love! I will hold you to that, you know. ♥

*snuggles you like whoa*

No money in translation? Nonesense! From what I've seen, there's good money to be had, and I'm guessing that interpretation is also a source of good wages. The whole industry is going through a massive boom now. However, most of the translation work I'm seeing is freelance (which means decent money but no fixed income) and it's good if you have back-up education in another field so you can be an "expert translator", which means you translate documents in your particular field, like law documents, or chemical reports, etc.

As for biology, most of the work I'm finding is either in the Microbiology, Pharmacology or Biochemistry realms, and related. Research is cool, but I'd rather industrial than academic, because academia is pretty much hell in that you're constantly under pressure to publish more and more and you have to have, like, a PhD and a couple post-doc's before you get to be an assistant professor, so it's a long, long (and more often than not, sorely paid) job.

♥! *wraps you up in snuggly arms*
