Because I was freaking out rather severely over packing (clothes! what clothes?!?) I filled out a meme. I still haven't decided whether to take the 4:30 or 3:30 am train tomorrow, which yay.
End of Year Meme, via
apiphile
1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
A shitload of stuff. Research internship, full of lion tracking and observation, herbivore counting, tea drinking in bomas, sleeping to the sound of hyenas having a blast, meeting with scientists as an almost-equal, exploring the Chyulu hills, fainting well-and-truly, shacking up in a tent with electrical outlets, getting a boyfriend and doing the squishy horizontal dance, meeting people who knew me as a toddler, talking to my best friend as a toddler, taking a friend to the hospital and freaking out quietly over it, exploring Nairobi and traversing the Kenyan coast as an adult, analyzing data, identifying and creating a database of all the lions in the area, totally kicking Access and ArcGIS's asses.
There was also falling in and out of love and breaking up.
Keeping up with a rigorous exercise regime, screwing up my knee and not fearing the Great White whilst swimming.
Saw the Pope (far away) on Christmas Day.
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I was too freaked out to make the resolutions, but they're always the same, and I always more-or-less fail or succeed.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Ex-boyfriend's aunt. I, the ass that I am, have yet to congratulate her, but I have been knitting a toy elephant, which may be absolutely hideous.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, only someone I met a couple times.
5. What countries did you visit in 2009?
Canada, Kenya, Rome and the Swiss airport.
6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
Oomf. You know, willpower and joy and go-get-em attitude.
7. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Oct 31, the day I signed up for Nano. Awesomesauce. (I suck with remembering dates, okay?)
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Completing my Masters in Biology, that's what! And my Nano. And not dying on the way to Kenya from the sheer freak-out of it.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Freaking out and zoning out for days, resulting in lost days where nothing was done or achieved. Also, fucking up a friendship, although it was pretty stale anyway and good riddance.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Horrific cough, unexplained fainting spell, fucked up knee, scoliosis diagnosis and a UTI. Joy.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Fake vampire teeth. They're awesome and I am easily amused.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Willy's.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Mother's (depressed) and that friend-who-wasn't-really (appalled, amongst other things).
14. Where did most of your money go?
Travel, food, rent.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Kenya and Nano.
16. What song will always remind you of 2009?
"All the Single Ladies" by Beyonce, because Willy and I'd turn it up and shimmy to it, and "Calendar Girl" by Stars, because I pretty much sang it for the whole first half of the year.
17. Compared to this time last year:
Happier or sadder? Same.
Older or wiser? Older and a tad wiser.
Thinner or Fatter? *hisses*
Richer or poorer? Neither, I'm a leech. I'll be poorer in a few months when I get a job.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Been happy and socialized.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Been a fucked up wreck of woe. One second of that is one second too much.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
With my parents and brother in an empty house in Rome, possibly stalking the Pope.
21. Did you fall in love in 2009?
I thought I did, but I don't know what it was anymore.
22. How many one-night stands?
None.
23. What was your favourite TV program?
Supernatural, The Daily Show, True Blood and Castle.
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't really hate so much as block out from my mind completely.
25. What was the best book you read?
A Good and Happy Child - Justin Evans. I haven't read all that much, though.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The Decemberists, Tim Minchin and whatever's on the fanmixes I've got.
27. What did you want and get?
Got laid, though it hardly lived up to descriptions in PWPs and NC-17s. (But then, how could it?) Returned to Kenya (something I've wanted all my life). Masters in Biology, whoot.
28. What did you want and not get?
Sanity, joy and a social life.
29. What was your favorite film of this year?
Kung-Fu Zombie (first viewing) and Excess Baggage (repeat viewing).
30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Was an utter hedonist and turned 26.
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Lions and the internet. Yes, that's two things, but then I split my year into two bits.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
Bush clothes for the first half, whatever I can fish out from the closet in the second.
33. What kept you sane?
There is an assumption in that question which may not be true. But Jon Stewart. And the internet.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Jon Stewart for the majority of it, with a slight fling with Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
I'm not so much stirred by the politics as I am by the oh my god please stop killing each other part of it. Also, the girl they found who'd been kidnapped years and years ago and kept hidden in the backyard with babies her captor and rapist had fathered. I was pretty "stirred" by that. *picks up pitchfork*
36. Who did you miss?
The usual folk, and some new folk for a little.
37. Who was the best new person you met?
Willy and
seschat. ♥
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:
Sometimes, your mother really is right about people.
39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"December is darkest and June is the light but this empty bedroom won't make anything right" - Stars, "Calendar Girl"

Date: 2009-12-23 05:17 am (UTC)Also- it's so weird that you mentioned Excess Baggage. Dom and I were talking about it a few days ago- she has a yearning to see it again. Did it bother you when it came out that it didn't have scenes from the trailer in it? I feel very cheated. Even though, you know, it was like a decade ago. D:
