I wrote some 1000 words my Firefly Simon&River scene last night. Which means that it's finished! I'm on such a completion-high right now... The scene can hold up as a one-shot, so it's postable and everything. (I did write a scene leading up to it, but it's only necessary if I ever write the whole Jayne-fic I've got on the backburner.)

The only annoying thing is that I was absolutely sure that there was some mythological island where people forgot who they were. I thought it was from Odysseus, but I've googled and wikied and can't find it. If I'm not just making this up and anyone knows what the island is called, please share.

Also desperately trying to come up with a nickname River might have for Simon. I've been looking for nouns in Chinese, like "button" or "pillow", but not convinced. Googling "chinese term endearment" gives me nothing.

Posting the story, and its prequel, over on sickle_stories, but I need to find a beta before setting this puppy loose into the fanfic world.


In other news, riding the train yesterday was a most glorious experience because there was a guy - scraggly, scruffy, "starving-artist" kind of guy - softly playing the guitar all through the trip. Simply living through that made me enjoy life for a while. I was also reading ...Vikram Lall, tearing up constantly over it, so all in all it was a beautiful experience.

And as far as postgrad goes, I've been oficially rejected by U of MAryland for their BEES program. Go me.

It seems likely that your memory has (and this seems somewhat appropriate) transformed a river into an island. In Greek mythology, the river Lethe, in Hades, caused people to forget who they were. Drinking from it was the pivotal moment in the process of reincarnation, allowing you to start your next life anew.

Actually, you're not wrong about the island either. Odysseus runs into the Lotophagi, who eat lotuses, lounge around and forget who they were and what they were doing. But the island doesn't have a name.

So lovely to see you here! I'm glad to know I wasn't making the whole island thing up - I just had the barest glimmer of recollection, which unfortunately doesn't hold up well to google.
