“What do you mean you just chuck ‘em over?” said Nori, horrified.
“Into the water?” said Dori.
Balin shook his head. “That’s just not right.”
“Disrespectful,” agreed Gloin.
“Well, it’s not like there’s much chance of a grave before the body goes to rot,” countered Grace. “It’s hard to be buried six feet under when you’ve got twenty leagues between you and dirt.”
“Dirt?” exclaimed Dori. “You put your dead in the dirt?”
“Oh, this is just going from bad to worse,” muttered Balin, shaking his head.
“No, not the dirt,” said Grace, hands thrown up in exasperation. “The ground.”
“I don’t know about you, lass, but the ground’s made of dirt for the most part,” said Bofur.
“I mean – we get buried.” She made a shovelling gesture with her hands. “We dig a hole.”
“And so instead of chucking them into the sea, you chuck them into the ground?” Nori’s horror was twisting into disgust.
Grace looked around at the faces staring at her like she had just admitted to cannibalism. “We put them in a box first!” she cried.
