The names were not burned along the wall*
Apr. 20th, 2011 07:37 pmWow. I haven't posted in a week. What that primarily means is that the Links of the Day is going to scare the bejeezus out of you, but it also means there's some catching up to do on events in Sickleland.
This past week I finished Grave Sight and Grave Surprise, the first two books in Charlaine Harris's (she of the Sookie Stackhouse books) series revolving around Harper Connelly, who can sense corpses and see their last living moments. I'm a bit in love with the books. I've even taken to listening to them in bed, instead of watching an episode of whatever, because the audiobook reader's voice is wonderfully soothing and, also, because I need to know what happens next. It's a bit strange that I like these and Sookie's books considering they're basically murder-mysteries, but since they're in the first person and the crime is still happening, or they're inovled in the mess, it doesn't feel like other murder-mystery books which follow the, "there was a crime, let us solve it" tone.
I've also gone a lot to the cinema because there's a Spanish film festival going on. Most of the films brought in are from Catalunya, which means subtitles for all, and the two films I've watched have been very gritty, very full of death and misery. Pa Negre was good in general, except you could tell it came from a novel, and I'll bet the novel is huge and intricate, and the day I can wipe the image of a horse-and-cart plummeting down a cliff cannot come too soon.
La Mosquitera we watched because of the actress, Emma Suárez, is one both my mom and I like. The movie, however, we did not like. Cats fell out of windows, wild boars got run over accidentally and on purpose, cougars of the human persuasion, rape, drug abuse, suicide attempts, this movie had it all, and yet it had no real story. Just "and then it got worse" for everyone. Maybe it was a good movie - people have ravd about it - but I didn't like the story.
We also rented Salvador (Puig Antich) with Daniel Brühl, which was also an uplifting cheerful thing about a young anarchist exected by the Franco regime. Executed by garrote, of all things, which is an image I'd like to not have in my head anymore. His actually was "the last state-sanctioned garrotings in Spain and in the world". It's very depressing to watch a movie with the hero in jail and fighting the death penalty when you know how it ends.
To lighten up things a little, I also watched The Voyage of the Dawn Treader which I give a lot of slack because the book is damn hard to make into a cohesive single concept apt for a film. However, Eddie Izzard no longer voicing Reepicheep? I am disappoint. (Also Simon Pegg was a darling.) Basically I loved the movie for the Eustance&Reepicheep friendship, and these two characters individually. And Eustance wasn't half as loathsome as in the books, which was good.
On Friday mom and I were supposed to go to a concert in a church, and in fact we were sitting in the pews with the concert just minutes away froms tarting, when her heart started acting up. And by that I mean tachycardia. So since we were out, and she had a doctor's appointment on Monday to go over her full check-up and tests of the week before, we decided to call dad and go to a hostpital to get mom an ECG so she could take that to the doctor and some headway could finally be made on her condition. (She's been having them a lot more frequently than in previous years, so there's some worry.) The whole hospital adventure lasted a mere half hour and cost absolutely nothing, both of which are shocking facts. They gave mom a shot to slow her heart down, but the doctors and nurses were hoverring pretty close because her heart was up at 170 bpm (when normal is 60-80).
It turns out that mom has bradycardia, which is basically an abnormally slow heart rate and, since it isn't due to great athleticism, drugs or hyperthyroidism, it's probably due to her atrioventricular node, or the heart's pacemaker, going wonky. This might be related to the tachycardia, but what it is is not good on account of being a freakishly slow heartbeat and also making the treatment of tachycardia tricky (in that a heart that naturally beats too slow is beating very fast, so you give it drugs to slow it down, and you might overstep the mark and make it go way too slow). So there is concern masked by optimism.
I've been madly focused on a fanvid which I never even meant to make. I just couldn't get Iron and Wine's Walking Far From Home out of my head. Specifically the line, "an angel crying, 'Take me back home, take me back home'". I couldn't get Castiel's face and that line out of my head, so I put clips to that line. Then I put clips to another pair of lines. Then another. And now I have a bunch of little clips and little stories and it's going to be a fanvid. And the fact is the clip with Castiel and that line breaks my heart so much more now than it did in my head. Damn it, Muse, why do you insist on making things that hurt me?
I recently got an email from Person in Organization, following up on his, "your CV is right up my project's alley, let me see if we have place for you to do an internship" promise. I have an interview - "a short discussion" - with him tomorrow, and I'm really keen on this opportunity because it's all about what I studied in my Masters. \o/
I'm also on holiday until Wednesday \o/
