Leave-taking
Mar. 23rd, 2006 04:12 pmTitle: Leave-taking, Part 1
Author: bending_sickle
Disclaimer: I only own a copy of the boxed series.
Fandom: Firefly, post-series
Pairing: Mal/Inara
Rating: PG-13
Words: 362
Summary: Inara announces her departure to the crew.
A/N: As extensively discussed, this is really going to be a snippet in a larger, more coherent fic. Just putting it out there for now.
Barely a day from Bernadette and they’d not said a word to each other all through dinner.
Kaylee’d cried, of course, when Inara’d finally announced her impending departure. Wash had been real sweet to her then, whilst his wife cast Mal a glance. “How long have you known?” it said.
Simon, ever the gentleman, had, along with Book, given Inara a heartfelt goodbye-sermon, going on about how glad they both were to have met such a fine lady. Mal was sure some of the words he’d used couldn’t be spelt by the average man. Although the Shepard had managed to lighten up the situation a bit, joking about not having used a one of his leper-sermons.
Jayne’d just mumbled a bit, mainly about him maybe visiting when they hit it big on a job, but he was cut off by kicks to the shin from various anonymous feet.
River, oddly enough, hadn’t said anything or even looked up from her drawings she’d insisted on bringing to the table. After Mal, she’d looked the least affected by Inara’s news.
“I heard it through the walls,” she’d said after catching Mal staring at her. “They do more than whisper.”
Somehow, dinner had turned into a sort of party after that. Kaylee’d gone and run off to get her liquor, though some of it was “more juice than juiced”. Jayne, insisting that a proper farewell required real drink and not wheat-juice, had contributed two flasks of sake. Inara finally told a few tales about Companion-life, mainly about her Guild House years as a student. Kaylee and River’d had a fun while trying out some of Inara’s balancing exercises (mostly because they kept on toppling, though.) Wash, at the insistence of Book and Jayne, had performed a short shadow-puppet play about Mr Mug and Mr and Mrs Spoon (occasionally voiced by Simon and Zoë, obviously needing a shot or two more of sake to be real enthusiastic puppet-performers).
And all that time Mal had hardly said a word: he’d just sat there at the head of the table, swivelling about to catch the various activities, laughed at the jokes, and marvelled at his crew.
Mostly, though, he’d just watched her laugh.
