I’ve got the lingering aftertaste of a Leonidas chocolate (gods bless Belgians) and am half-watching Nicky’s ([livejournal.com profile] obsessive24) “Wires” video, enjoying Athlete’s song to no end.

I watched “Le Decline de l’Impire Americain” this afternoon, for free, no less, at the French Institute. Coincidently, the first time I watched it was also free: in the streets of Montreal during the movie festivals andohgodI’mforgettingthestreetnames. (I’ve watched this movie too many times.) This means I got to hear the Quebec accent and a loon and see snow for the first time in almost a year. Everyone kept giggling but I realized I’m homesick for another country whilst being in my own.

This morning I thought maybe last week’s episodes were just surging hormones (which it very well may’ve been) and not, y’know, actual misery. But on reconsideration this afternoon (wow, I sound literate), though flipping hormones may aggravate the situation, they’re not the sole cause.

This weekend I managed, as said, to hook my computer to the wireless and downloaded a whole load of videos. Some were old one’s I’d scribbled down as favourites. There’s still a whole boatload more of those – especially over at Xandra’s idaresay productions. I emailed her to tell her which vids of hers were may favourites, since she’s taken them down from her Power That Vids site and may not put them all back up. The email bounced back, so I’ll try again.

But I’m really happy with the selection I’ve got here. I really like Nicky’s vids, especially “Wires” and “Word Up” (awesome), though I have to check out her other fandom vids. LithiumDoll, who’s site URL I may or may not have jotted down, has really nice ones too, like “Inara” (using “Mary” by Patty Griffin – excellent song) and “Ademius”, which is simple a vid appreciating the ship that is Serenity. J-Dos also tends to make good ones, and I’m sure I’ve linked to the site before, but let me stress the joys of “Setting Sun”. I know I’ve talked about [livejournal.com profile] spikeylover, but holy gods does her “Hallelujah” deserve its award. “Ghost of a Rose” is as good as I remembered. Her “Chance” vid on Amber Benson’s ibidly-titled movie makes me all sad because the relationship seems to be a normal, everyday, could-be-anyone. Plus, pretty people. (I haven’t watched the movie, but have seem clips thanks to – oh gods, um… I can’t check my scribbles, but I think the website was Secretloft. I’ll go on a rampage if it isn’t.) Nicole Anell’s “Unsent” and Ryan’s (Morbid Much) “Uninvited”, as well as someone’s “Man Smart, Woman Smarter” over at the Buffy Vid Database are swell, as is Andrea’s “Fix You”.

But my current favourites are “Wires”, “Inara” and “The girl of my dreams (is giving me nightmares)” by Jacqui (wily_one24).

As far as writing is concerned, I think I need to be stopped and made to finish one thing before starting another. I was sitting in the train on the way back to Barcelona and came up with an image (which is how my story-telling usually starts). This one was of Mal sitting on the common-room couch with a woman’s hand in his, and him leaning over and kissing her head without either saying a word.

At first I figured it would be Inara, and that they’d finally managed to stop yelling at each other for one split second the evening before she leaves. But on second thought, think Kaylee would work better.

So last night I wrote the first part of “Leave-taking” and already have a companion piece that I’m going to have to write because I just won’t let go of a phrase. This being, “Kaylee came in smelling of sake and sex.” I’m sorry, but I can’t let this phrase go, despite the fact that this fic is set before the Bid Damn Movie and thus before any Simon/Kaylee sexing. Say it outloud with me, “smelling of sake and sex”. Shiny, isn’t it? (Or is “sex and sake” more musical? But then the “sex” bit doesn’t shock…) So now I want to write a Kaylee/Jayne scene, going from a drunk farewell party to Kaylee and her sake and sex smell. Picking Jayne because, outside of Mal and Simon, and not including fem-slash (simply because I just don’t see it happening), there’s little choice but Jayne. (Nevermind that the poor man’s carrying a torch for her and they were totally playing footsie in “Trash”.)

I know it’s mean of me to be discussing how my writing is going without actually providing the fics. I’m actively working now on two fics (or three, if you want to count K/J which doesn’t have a sentence to its name) but one is being written backwards. Can’t very well present that, can I?

Although, I do have 2730 words from three scenes that can be read together, and 2005 words after that in two scenes. So really, to start posting this, I just need to write the beginning bit, which would be a haggling-and-waiting scene with a bit of intrigue (aka plot) thrown in. Coo’.

I think I need to break out of my shell and post my first Jayne-scene (“We’re all girls here”) to some communities. Even though I later want to weave it into the main Jayne-fic, I think it stands alone pretty well. There’s just that one accusing question by River, but hey, she’s crazy, she can say whatever. Does the title work? What I’m going for in River’s comment, and which I’d expand in the whole Jayne-fic (gotta give this thing a name), is the correlation between the guns having girl names, as does Jayne, and all three (guns, River and Jayne) being weapons.

It might stand alone so well because it’s the first thing written for the fic. Also, first thing I wrote that was full-on fanfiction. Except maybe for that one-page of X-Men Scott-pov… But this is seriously the first time I’m trying to hold on tightly to characterization, trying to come up with a plot, not inserting any weird characters - *cough*MarySue*cough* - and sticking to a timeline.

Why do I refer to all my fics by a character’s name? There’s the Jayne one, now the Inara one, then the Jaylee (i.e. Jayne/Kalyee). I’ve also (badly) written a Toad fic and that Scott fic, as well as a somewhat decent Logan fic. (This was back in my X-Men phase.) And the Planet of the Apes fics is still “Thade-fic” in my head.

I’m pretty happy with how “Leave-taking” is shaping up, and may post the first bit too, particularly because it ends on a very definite-sounding tone. A “this is the end of the fic” kind of tone.

I’m delighted that I know when to stop the damn thing too. It’ll have three parts and one companion piece. So nice to have the fic all figured out.

Tomorrow This week I’ll write a French essay about communication. I’m making it about how the Internet is helping me write. Because there’s other people’s writing (both good and bad), comm’s about characters, stories, and even new comm’s about how people write. And I’m sure there’s more stuff to say about that, possibly more coherently, but it’s 1:21 in the morning and my brain is shutting down.

PS: Must check out [livejournal.com profile] the_cortex too.
