Okay, I get it now! Stupid me! *facepalm*

*takes a deep breath*

I have always been terribly confused about all matters regarding Sam’s powers, which I believe is pretty much the show's fault because of the abysmal continuity!fail. If I don’t make any sense, this is why.

First, it was YED's blood, which made him psychic, but with YED's death that power seems to have gone.

Have the powers really been gone, or did Sam just want to believe they were gone? Sam has been always positively terrified of the prospect of him being able to do Stuff, which I believe greatly stems from his fear of Dean’s reaction towards them and ultimately (obviously), towards Sam by association. So it seems only natural that Sam refrains from prodding at these powers, and is only glad to be all So, Dean, since the YESOB is gone now, I’m completely normal! Look at how normal I am! Don’t I look normal?! Say I’m normal, for fuck’s sake! (If I only deny try hard enough, the powers will be gone. THEY WILL!)

Also, I believe that Sam hadn’t started drinking the demon blood before mid-season 4, since we know from that one flashback and several glimpses of Sam training to exorcise demons (and save people, dammit) that he still was in godawful pain while trying to do so. So, in conclusion, I don’t really buy the whole Sam’s powers depend on YED.

I rather believe that by bleeding into wee!Sammy’s mouth YED, I don’t know, maybe activated or woke Sam to his powers. Supernaturalwiki claims that

In "Lucifer Rising," it is revealed that his [Sam's] powers are not actually given to him through the drinking of demon blood, rather they were always fully his.

This apparently is referring to Ruby telling Sam you never needed the feather: you could always do it on your own, Dumbo, or something like this, anyway. I don’t remember the exact wording, but Sam’s just offed Lilith, Lucifer is rising, and Ruby is pretty much revealing him her Big Damn Genius Plan, completely uncensored. Why should she lie about Sam’s powers? Can we assume that the demon blood just worked as a placebo, that Ruby had Sam drinking it to be able to control him? This would make sense if we turn to Ava, who started out exactly as Sam, who didn’t touch even a drop of demon blood, but nonetheless was able to kick ass like no one else. Didn’t she describe her developing powers with you just have to turn a switch in your head and it all comes to you? I believe she did in All Hell Breaks Loose I. So what is it with the whole frickin’ drinking of demon blood? Also, it is known that YED was actually a fallen angel, which pretty much raises even more questions. *drops dead from confusion*

And we see this when Sam does the anti-angel spell with his blood. When Sam does it, the blood burns (hellfire, anyone?), but when Dean or Cas do it, it doesn't.

I must admit that I hadn’t noticed that at all! *gasps* … I mean, all you said was completely right and the show does, indeed, suggest that Sam is different now (see Anna, the crazy bitch, looking at Sam and going all “Sam, you have changed! Is that a new haircut?”; and I’m also highly interested in how exactly Sam is different.

But my problem always was the sheer strangeness of the detoxing. At times, Sam seems to be just fine after having “used up” all the blood, then again the powers throw him all around Bobby’s panic room (which was awesome, by the way; I want Sam’s TK back!)… everything’s just so damn inconclusive, and the show doesn’t exactly help us clear things up.
