Wasn't ninjas, sir; not ninja style.*
Sep. 27th, 2007 08:54 pmToday was the last day of field work. It was a really nice day out today, very sunny, but the wind just wouldn't stop, and we saw very little. (Suspect ninjas.) Heck, we saw more on Monday, torrential rain and all. I took some more pictures, which will be shared sometime-ish.
Yesterday went by ok. I dressed up pretty and tried to enjoy myself, but seeing as it was 90% stats, the day wasn't all that jazzy. I did, however, buy an authentic Italian tiramisu (and by authentic I mean honest-to-gods-real mascarpone). Delish. I also enjoyed numerous phone conversations with family and friends, opened a package from ma' that had arrived just that day (and was delivered to my neighbour for safe keeping, which: wierd much? Is that legal? Despite the postman having the option on his card-thing, I don't know how I feel about neighbours holding my packages in trust...). I now have lovely house-mocassins with half a rabbit hanging off of each. Soft, cuddly, beautiful. And waaarm.
May meet up with new friend Elisa (Japan/Spain nationality, Japan-raised, Hawaii-Bachelor Education) tomorrow or Saturday, which is market day at Leiden. We get along splendidly - particulalry since we sort of come from the same background/mentality, international schools, English-language and all that. There's also been much bonding over our many frustrated attempts at undestanding R, the stats program. (It is seriously evil.)
I watched Ep.3 of Life on Mars, and squeed so many times at Sam. God I love that character. (Viewers comments on LoM.)
I've got to read stats now, which is lovely. Particularly since we're on chapter 16 and I'm still on 2, which is background info anyway.

Someone mentioned Jacob's Ladder in a LoM comment, so I had to look.

The Great Space Coaster introduction video. Description: This is how it all began. One of the most unrecognized and underappreciated shows ever. Very few people remember the show due to its limited release. Many people have thought they were crazy as they would try and describe the show to friends, and be greeted with blank stares. Well, here you go. You weren’t crazy after all. It really did exist! So come fly through the fish skeleton... Also, I think all news shows should have one day in which they follow the teachings of Gary Gnu: "nothing bad or wrong ever". Just for one day, or one hour even, they should dedicate all the news to good things, or interesting things, or anything that isn't death and mayhem. 'Cause it's still news even if no one dies. (See also July 19th featured clip. Adorable.)
On Neil Gaiman's blog, where Annalisa explains the concept of maid cafes and "moe" in Japan, a Beowulf-banner-making photoshop guy links to a new trailer for Beowulf (click on afore-mentioned banner), a film for which Neil and Roger Avery wrote the screeeplay. It's "digitally enhanced live action", which means that it sort of looks like a video game, and not at all like ol' entirely-shot-in-studio 300. Comments on the feed are mixed about the expectations for the film. I for one can tell you that I don't like the digital look of the thing. However, Neil's described it as a "cheerfully violent and strange take on the Beowulf legend", so I don't think we have to take it too seriously.
ETA: I'm just thinking, Neil's apparently got a thing for Beowulf. There's at least three short stories (Bay Wolf, the The Monarch of the Glen novella and...dang, I know there's another) on the legend. But I like this, that I can recognize the Neilness in his stories. Like with Diane Schoemperlan, only I often got upset with her because she reused images and details (like dreams or character habits) rather than themes... Yet it's nice to know an author's works well enough to recognize things, or know just what type of sense of humor they have, or exactly how they'd read a passage. *unending Neil-love*

Date: 2007-09-27 08:44 pm (UTC)but instead they decided to deliver it in the morning, and yes, gave them to the neighbour's so that i would have to go knock on their door for them.
i mean, it happened to be evan's apartment, so it wasn't weird, but i kept thinking- if they had given it to the OTHER neighbours, it would be so easy for them to be like "score! roses for the wifey for v-day!" and just tell me they hadn't been delivered...
i think it's bizarre. why not let us pick up our bloody parcels when we have the time ourselves?
