Let me tell you about my mother*

1) I have a coin collection (which does not necessarily mean I'm a numismatic - I just hoard the pretty shiny things and am therefore a casual collector). We're going to Switzerland next week, passing through other countries. What does my mom do, then, pray ask?

She tells me to go through my coin collection for Swiss Francs. My coin collection. (The whole statement is in italics because I'll be damned if I know which word should be stressed more.) Because that's what you do with your daughter's private collection of thingies.

Anyway, no, I didn't have much in the way of Swiss Francs - some 12 cents that I was willing to part with, leaving me with 11 cents. I told mom. She didn't believe me. Then she shouted, from the living room, to me, in my bedroom with the door closed, if she'd be able to look at the coin collection herself. (Not in the "please could I?" tone but in the sarcastic "do you freakin' think it'd be at all possible" tone.) Which, yes, but really, nonono, not at all. Because I looked (through my collection) and I don't give a rat's ass if she thinks she saw a five franc coin somewhere, I don't bloody have it (and what's she doing snooping** into my coin collection anyway?)

Note that she never had any doubts as to my being okay with the whole "spending a portion of my coin collection". Because it's not like it's mine or anything. Respect of property is only for other people, just like appologizing or being a bloody person.

...why yes, I did spend the day being all :( and near the ;_; face.

2) My mother has incredibly unrealistic expectations and notions regarding the job market. I mean, she'd talk as if it were a slam-dumk for me to get into the IUCN or EU (while at the same time saying I'll never get a job by just sending out CVs and should be drinking mojitos with total strangers instead).

Lately, my dad spoke about me with Personganization to which I've already sent my CV for volunteer and part-time work and has no other oppening. Person said, "Oh, how wonderful! Have her send me her CV." Done and done, and now Person says, "What a fantastic CV! Well, I'll circulate it, see if anyone's interested. Sadly, it's very a much a 'right place, right time' deal."

So what does my mother do? She talks about my not being able to make plans to go get my ID renewed over in Nation because "what if you're at Organization?" Wow, jump the gun much? I mean, that's not support in the "Oooh, it'd be wonderful! I'm sure you'll get a job! There's bound to be an opening for you!" and more delusional "working there would be fantastic! It would solve everything!" This was the vibe she was giving when we were in Brussels too. Like anyone just starting off could get a job right-quick at the EU. Delusional.

Question: What is the term for the red domed thing at the entrance in this photo?

** This is a person, however, who not only opened and read my preteen diary, but corrected the spelling and put massive question marks in the border. And hid behind my bed in my room, then giggled when I walked in and talked to myself thinking I was alone in my room. Honestly, what the fuck?

The red domed thing...I've always just heard it called an awning? There might be a fancier word somewhere.

[identity profile] bending-sickle.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Google says yes! (http://www.google.ca/images?hl=en&q=awning&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1280&bih=619) Thank you!

Or rather, yes-but-not-quite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awning), because if it's got columns, it's a canopy. Funny, I thought it'd have it's own special name.

*drops dead* WHAT WHAT

PROTECT YOUR COIN COLLECTION, ADRI.

... FOR FUCK'S SAKE. This definitely calls for a ;___;, definitely. (Also, if you like, I could send you some Russian coins!)

*GIVES YOU THE BIGGEST HUG IN THE WORLD'S HISTORY* dammit.

[identity profile] bending-sickle.livejournal.com 2010-10-05 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, if you like, I could send you some Russian coins! - You don't need to buy my undying love, darling! I'd feel bad because you already own my sqishy little heart, and anyway, it's money that's still, you know, spendable.

Although, are Russian coins pretty? ...maybe paltry change like a penny?

*HUGS THE EVER BLAZIN' DAYLIGHTS OUT OF YOU THEN SNUGGLES IN THE DARK*

[identity profile] seschat.livejournal.com 2010-10-05 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
*snorts* Darling, there's next to nothing in Russia you can buy with some coins nowadays. I had some ten ruble note lying around somewhere, and even that doesn't amount to more than 30 cents. So don't you worry about me going broke. ;)

You tell me if you find the coins pretty! I guess I've looked at them too much to be able to appreciate them, if there's something to appreciate, anyway! So... if you want 'em, you got 'em! I haven't sent you anything in quite a while. :)

♥ I adore you, you silly woman! *glomps*

[identity profile] bending-sickle.livejournal.com 2010-10-05 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
*double-snorts* Aw man, it's a shame about rubles, then. Money denominations that make you spend, like, 1000 on simply getting a cup of coffee makes me sad.

Dude! *points* That man there, on that coin, with the horse! I has! *pulls out coins* The grand sum of one kopenka (?). Also in my grubby hands are coins of 10 and 5 (all them with same dragon-slaying St. George or Michael Archangel! Where's the creativity?!?) I've also got a 1 ruble coin, with eagles. So, um, Russian coins are pretty but they're all the same. Woe.

So, er, I think I've actually pulled a Pokemon and got 'em all (except for the 2 ruble, which looks the same as the one ruble, why?!?), unless Russia has decided to be mad-creative recently or released some strange ones.

Whatever, I leave it in your hands because my brain's going out the window and can't form coherent sentences anymore. I go fill out form and make fanmix now.

[identity profile] seschat.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Done and done, ma'am!

Apropos letters... *flails*, aw! Sweetheart! You shouldn't have! I got your postcard, and am pretty sure you can't imagine how happy and giggly I felt when I came home from school and saw it lying there on my desk, hee! ♥ And for the record, I think that bridge is badass! ;)

Thank you so much, honey! ♥ *clings to you like a madwoman*

Also, your links of the day are as wonderful as usual! *approves of [livejournal.com profile] czmere's Prop 8 discussion* Sometimes I wish I could fast-forward to a time where we're over our need to put everything into "quaint little categories". *shifty eyes* But I know, I know, you know that. ;p

[identity profile] bending-sickle.livejournal.com 2010-10-05 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
*dances in the heart shower*

Stupid categories. Why can't people jsut accept that we're all made up of venn diagrams and that there's overlapping of categories up the wazoo? *sighs loudly at humanity*

The most powerful weapon in the arsenal of a crazy person is the ability to make you wonder if you're the nutter. Your mother uses that sarcastic tone because she thinks of you, her child, as an extension of herself, so of course she should have access to your coin collection to do whatever she wants with. Having to argue with you over it is like having to argue with her foot over taking a step. She's wrong, but that's her logic -- which is how she can say and do things like that as if they are perfectly normal, and make you wonder sometimes if you really are the one being unreasonable.

I obviously cannot diagnose your mother third-hand, but I also cannot diagnose rockstars third-hand either and look what I spend my time doing. Your comments about her thinking personal property is for OTHER people are very telling. Keep telling her no. She'll throw tantrums, but she'll throw tantrums anyway, when she asks you for something you physically cannot accommodate and you don't do it. I'd suggest password protecting everything on the computer myself, and if there's anything especially valuable that you'd be upset if she got into, you might want to leave it with a friend...

[identity profile] bending-sickle.livejournal.com 2010-10-05 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks very much for your comment; it was a welcome surprise. ♥ (I'm really enjoying your posts on Rob Thomas, by the way.)

It's true that sometimes I doubt whether I'm the one who's overreacting or being unfair, but writing it down (and having friends say, basically, "It's not you") helps.

My mother doesn't go through my stuff on a daily basis or anything like that - she just has a prodigious (albeit selective) memory. Since my family moves quite a bit, and the last few times I wasn't living with them, my mom's gone through my things in the "diminish what we have and pack the rest" capacity. So I'm not worried of her walking into my room and grabbing my diary, for example (although there's some things of mine I'd rather not look for in case they've been thrown out).

The greater problem is simply how she treats me and what this does to my own emotions and self (which is not a very happy self to start with, what with being a not-so-recent-anymore graduate who's unemployed and has recently moved back in with her parents in a new country with no friends who has no idea what's going to happen and is getting more than a little frazzled and dispirited by the situation). I don't know if you caught the post prior to this one...

Anyway, thanks very much again for your comment. It helps.

[identity profile] yumemisama.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm not worried of her walking into my room and grabbing my diary, for example

Really? Because right up there in the entry, you point out that she has actually done just that. They don't un-learn this stuff by themselves, yannow.

[identity profile] bending-sickle.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yes, but that was more than a decade ago and anyway, I don't want to be worried about that.

I don't know anymore. I'm just trying to get by.
