Torchwood Reactions
1x05 - Small Worlds
General
This isn’t a kid’s show, so you don’t have to whack me on the head with your clues. I get it, he’s a pedophile. More subtlty, please.
Yay for the faeries being like Pratchett’s elves: “Elves are terrific. They beget terror. […] No one ever said elves are nice. Elves are bad.” I like their pov!camera color and blur.
Who walks about in the market with a ½ rack of lamb? (Or pig, dunno). The creators people have never been to a real market, have they?
If Torchwood doesn’t do police work, and doesn’t do science, what the bloody hell does it do?
Estelle
Love this woman, and I’m shipping Jack/Estelle so hard. But, woman, don’t use the flash if you don’t want them to know you’re there! And there’s no such thing as a “friendly, loving creature” that is so to everything, everywhere, all the time. Take your cuddliest, fluffiest animal, and poke it, then tell me if it’s still friendly and loving.
Jack
Yay for realistic way of waking up from a nightmare! No yay that the nightmare precedes the plot: it should be after Jack thinks it might be faeries. I loved his faery speech, though, and him being world weary in the wee hours with Ianto, and his face when in the cell and seeing petal-choked man.
“Find another chosen one.” Um, I think you’re missing something about the whole point of being a chosen one, Jack, and about destiny and all that jazz. She is what she is.
Parents
“Put a stop to things” is bad parenting if that’s all they do. Also, don’t these adults work? What are they doing at home all the bloody time?
1x06 – Countrycide
General
This is the first episode I truly enjoyed, for all its storytelling fails.
I liked the opening, even if it has plot holes. The existence of the baseball bat, for example, although I loved the fact of it, that the woman got out to help but knew it could be a sort of trap. Oh, humanity, why are you so tricksy and untrusting? Also, did they really have to go through al those theatrics to get the woman? And another thing: if it’s a village tradition, why did they eat the village? *does not compute*
It took me three repeat listens to finally understand what Gwen said about snogging. I even googled for transcripts (lacking) because I just couldn’t decipher what they were saying in that scene.
Hatehatehateing the over-the-shoulder panic shots. It’s distracting and making me too aware of the camera. The mis-timed cuts are nice, if traditional in a panic sequence, but again, the in-your-face of it distracts. The camera-work style is too inconsistent in this show. Hated also the guns-blazing slow-mo shots (and the fact that they happened because of where it puts Jack: the hero pedestal).
Owen
Own’s anti-camping and anti-grass comments finally won me over. I’m sorry, I don’t know how it happened, but suddenly I cared about him. (He’s still a jerk, but at least I’m open to more layers.) Oi, Owen, you cheeky bugger! Kiss and tell.
Ok, Owen’s coming off as a sex maniac. I mean, the pheromone thing at the beginning, the sexing-up of the possessed girl, the grinding Gwen up against a tree… I really didn’t catch much UST coming from Owen directed at Gwen, just various quips and innuendoes. So if he isn’t sex-obsessed, this whole “you know you wanna fuck” thing is a bit sudden.
Owen has really expressive – and distracting – lip-twitching moves. What is that?
Lovelovelove his calm!doctor persona, how he’s trying to reassure Gwen.
Gwen
Is it really appropriate to propose a “kiss and tell” game with your coworkers? How long has Gwen been with these people? How much does she know? Because she knows about the Rift, but that hasn’t been adequately explained to us, and she’s our guide in Torchwoodworld. Just feeling a bit left out.
“I have seen things you would never believe and this is the only thing I can’t understand.” -> Lovely.
Gwen/Own
Oh, the impending tree sex…she so didn’t need to lunge at him like that. Gwen’s gripping of his jacket when he was fixing her up was perfect. The closer shot of her momentarily almost caressing his neck, that we could’ve done without, what with her being in pain and probably too distracted to put the moves on Owen. (But I’ll forgive, because hurt people can focus on the weirdest things.) I shipped Gwen/Owen so hard after the gun triangle. Ah, the end. As awesome as instant gratification of new shipping is, anticipation is half the fun. Also, Reese, the poor thing!
Ianto
Oh, darling! His quip at Owen’s “parts are missing” was lovely, and he keep quietly breaking my heart. “Sorry she’s dead or sorry you mentioned it?” Ooh, way to go with the initiative! And before Tosh, too. Ianto’s certainly carving himself a spot on the team with zest. Omg, open-shirt and crowbar sitting. *licks* His heroic headbutting! And the smile before that! Oh, Ianto, I think I love you.
Jack
Um…you know it’s a trap so you send Teaboy and Informatics alone? Wtf, Jack? And no, saying they’re not kids and can look after themselves – while true, maybe, for Tosh (though she seems more likely to sit excursions out in favour of looking at maps and coordinating the team, as we’ve seen), but certainly not Ianto – doesn’t help. Jack’s got a really funny snarl-dimple combination, and it’s too handsomely dashing to be taken seriously. I think that’s my problem with Jack: I just can’t take him seriously. (Well, unless he’s world-weary. There I’m sold.)
1x07 – Greeks Bearing Gifts
General
Your husband calmly takes out a rifle and you instantly think he’s gone unhinged and is going to kill you? What, no confused, “Honey, what’s going on? Why do you have a rifle?” Man, shit relationship or what?
“You’re Grandad’s little secret.” -> Can we please stop it with the pedophiliac and rape references on this show?
Soldier
Why on earth would you go all the way into the depths of a forest to screw a whore when everyone else does it in the alleyways? And why is the soldier in full uniform at that hour of the night? Is he even allowed to leave camp? (I mean, I understand he’s a psycho, going all Ripper on us, but still.)
Mary
The pendant’s been in the family for generations, and just because you’ve gotten tired of it you’re going to give it away to a stranger? Lame excuse, Mary, very lame.
“Yours is a culture of invasion.” -> ♥
Owen
Oh, yes, girls go wild for the wiry boys. (Well, me at least.) Not only is “quite a mouthful” a private joke, but it’s a pretty obvious one at that. Oh great, force Owen to pick between two girls, how original.
Tosh
Finally! Some Tosh character exploration! You can’t recognize alien technology after all this time? Miss, that pendant just reeks of alien. And even if you can’t recognize it, aren’t you worried that your co-workers will notice it’s alieny? This whole thing with the pendant is giving me massive BtVS flashbacks, down to the random murderer and the near!crazy.
“These are people that are supposed to like me.” -> Oh, Tosh, darling…
Who opens up so fast and so much to a complete stranger who picked you up at a bar and is being very weird? We don’t have much of a time scale, and I realize Tosh may be a bit naïve or unused to love affairs, but that’s just silly.
Gwen
So you’ve screwed Owen a few times, ‘kay. But my question, is how did that first time start? Because that definitely wasn’t spontaneous passion. It was at his place, for crying out loud. How did that happen?!?
“A lover suited you.” -> ♥
Ianto
How much do I love Ianto knowing Jack was bluffing with the transporter? So much.
Jack
He certainly has a thing for killing his team’s lovers. And they never resent him, apparently. Oy.
