You wouldn't like me when I'm hungry.*

Today's been chock-a-block** full of events.

1) I finally went to Madurodam (knee-high replicas of neighbourhoods and important buildings of the Netherlands). The last time I'd been there I was aged between 1 and 2. I'v always loved the photo of my brother and myself towering over defenseless buildings. So I was really keen on going back***. I obviously didn't recognize anything from the photo, but I did recognize various landmarks and buildings from having actually been there. I took a gazillion photos.

2) I walked to Scheveningen (the actual beach) from Madurodam and walked along the beach listening to Richard and Door searching for the Angelus (I ♥ Gaiman's reading-aloud-skills) under the rain that hasn't let up from last night and, after wandering about the indoor promenade, went back downtown.

3) I watched The Incredible Hulk. Now, if you'd asked me yesterday whether I'd ever want to watch this, I'd've said no. But non-dubbed Kung Fu Panda wasn't on for two hours and nothing else struck my fancy. Besides, I thought, [livejournal.com profile] lienne liked it. I took a closer look at the poster. And it has Ed Norton and Tim Roth. Now I have to watch it.

You see, there's some actors that are on my "I could totally be convinced to watch this just 'cause he's in it" list. In other words, it's a list of actors I enjoy simply watching act. There's Ed Norton and Tim Roth, as you might've guessed, but also Ryan Gosling (amazing), Johnny Depp, Anthony Hopkins, Sean Connery, Leo DiCaprio (recent addition due to leaving me gobsmacked twice in succcession with Blood Diamond and The Departed), Morgan Freeman (exceptions: The Bucket List^ and where ever he plays God, because it's hard to put nuance into God), Nathan Fillion (because he can do bitty boy -> broken man so fast it gives you whiplash), Will Smith (le fun), Mortiz Bleibtreu (my favorite German actor), Christian Berkel, Til Schweiger, Javier Bardem (represent!)...

The actress version of this list is a bit shorter, becauase my brain is weird that way. (Also, more male leads than female?) I totally squee at the idea of Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Laura Linney, Helen Hunt...

So, how's about we talk a bit about Hulk? A sort of running-commentary, except after the fact. ETA: Character names added ;)

1) I have never had to pay so much attention to opening credits in my entire life, and still feel like I missed a bunch. It was like they just flashed an entire hour of story past me, like those Previously clips where you sort of need to know what happened to figure out what they're reminding you of.

2) I loved the extended quiet scenes featuring Bruce and found it a lovely introduction to his plight. Also, whoot acting skillz!

3) Damnit! Portuguese! And the subtitles are in Dutch. Well, my Spanish'll have to help out.
3b) Norton's voice escalates in sexyness when speaking Spanish, by the way. Rawr.

4) Oh Bruce, why didn't you go be a hermit someplace deserted? Why go to such a massively populated area where the slightest irritation can lead to casualities of apocalytpic proportions?

5) Of course, Typical Macho hounds Damsel in Distress and Gets Mouthy with The Gringo. *sigh*

6) You're looking for a white guy at the factory? Right. Because it's completely inconceivable that there'd be any white people in a Brazilian factory, gods no. There's only one in the whole country.

7) Dude, why does the factory have open bottles lying around at night? Any number of things could crawl in there. Shouldn't they, like, finish bottling a batch each day?

8) D'aw, dog. Australian Cattle Dog, methinks. Although, what's the point of the dog? And who'd have a dog when on the run? Irresponsible much?
7b) He. Left. The Dog. He left. The Dog.

9) Elasti-pants for the win. And oh, the irony of a gringo begging for money from a Mexican. It warms my heart, much like The Day After Tomorrow's border scene did.

10) Who the hell wrote this dialogue? Seriously trite and prediactable.

11) Liv Tyler's entire role consisted or re-enacting that scene from Bambi. All she does is talk real slow and put on big teary eyes.

12) There's an unbelievable amount of Nekkid-Norton-Flesh going about. Lovely.

13) Wait, what? Blonsky is Russian, but was raised in England. And works for the US Army. Why the hell make the character Russian in the first place?
10b) Roth also spends a delightful amount of time shirtless. I'm liking this movie more and more.

14) Omg! It's that guy! That guy who's face I always recognize then have to cross-check with a mental catalogue for ages before realizing it's Peter Mensah, the messenger in 300.

15) Motor-run homemade centrifuge ftw!
15b. Other depictions of science? For the loss and shame.

16) There's a lot of rain scenes too. Delightful. *oogles*

17) Wait, Bruce can cross entire continents and country borders without a hitch - and do so whilst being green and angry - but can't get past a university security guard?
12b) Zomg those outdoor university stairs! I know them! McGill, baby, is that you? Get out the way bitch actors! I need to see the campus! ETA: No, obviously not McG, but damn if that concrete design didn't look familiar. Have I ever actually been to UofT's campus even?

18) More of the Italian guy, please. He's lovely.

19) Tim Roth's predatory stare is sexy as hell. *melts*

20) Of course it's her dad. *sigh*

21) Oh gag, it's like King Kong all over again. Beauty calms the Beast. I hate scenes like these.

22) Norton's face has gotten very angular. And it looks more like Baby!Face Norton from Primal Fear than American History X (where I first saw him). We have wiped The Illusionist from our memory, thankyouverymuch.

23) I like Mr Blue, in his blue shirt (but not in the Lost sense of the word).
16b. Well, I liked him until his glee and curiosity and helping of the madman who wants to be a god. And that creepy smile at the end.

24) Blonksy's story arc? Predicable as hell. (Yet conceptually still disturbing.)
24b. Ok, you can put your shirt back on, Roth. And care to act a bit more? And why is your hair always so lanky and greasy?!?

25) It's...Lazaurs from Doctor Who. Only with less tail and mandibles.

26) Heh, "Shi-" Because the best time to learn how to control your complete alteration of psyche and physique is as you're falling from a helicopter.

27) Why is it that Betty survives where other's die? At the beginning - but we can handwave that with the power of twu wuv - and then with the helicopter.

28) I don't much care for any of the action thoughout the film. However? Hulk going all Spiderman though the city? Kinda awesome.

29) Finally! A nice quiet hermit lifestyle...in BC. Right. Remember kids, loners go to Canada, criminals go to Mexico. The geography of American films, let me show you it.

30) ...Ironman cameo? Sniping about how working on armor's smarter than working on soldiers? Did that just happen?

Also? X-Files trailer didn't sell me but I don't care. I is watching because zomg it's X-Files.

I also firmly believe that every movie should have a post-credits Easter Egg clip.

* The Incredible Hulk
** I love using this phrase ever since I learnt it from Love, Actually
***It's a bit surreal going to places you know you've been, even places you've lived in, and not remember. I wonder what'd it'd be like if I went back to Mexico, or Costa Rica, and see our old house and my old schools. I've done just that for my life in Montreal, and it hurt a bit, because things change and the reality of this violates your memories. It's hard to cling to the memory of a place when you see that it doesn't exist quite that way now.
^ For two reasons: a) Jack Nicholson, while amazing, creeps me out more than a little, and b) the film's a chipper-version rip-off of Knocking on Heaven's Door, which was awesome.

*cough* Actually, nearly every university scene in that movie was shot at U of T. My friend and I were like "haha, Med Sci. Haha, UC. Haha, indoor shot of Robarts".

Also <3333.

PS: Bruce Banner. Not "Norton's Character". Betty Ross. Not "Tyler's Character". >.>

PPS: Remember kids, loners go to Canada, criminals go to Mexico. The geography of American films, let me show you it. I am so fucking tempted to metaquote this. xDD

PPPS: 30) Yes. Yes it did. xD

I figured it must've been UofT, but that didn't stop my heart going all pitter-patter at that split-second of fantasized recognition.

And yes, I know their names - well, would've remembered them eventually. Me + names = le suck, remember?

You've got blanket permission of metaquoting anytime :)

*cough* Last time I metaquoted something a friend said it kind of went Horribly Wrong. I'd probably better not, lest the Internet disagree with me on how funny you are. But the sentiment is there, at least! <3

*giggles* Yeah, it's just that going to see Hulk and then talking about "Norton's character" is a bit... hilarious, to someone with enough comics knowledge to know the name off the top of their head (i.e. me).

I fixed the names in, just for you :)

But the sentiment is there, at least! <3 - *hugs the sentiment and feeds it cookies*

Amen.

Love that woman. Broke my heart in Ladies in Lavender, and so many other times as well.
