I've finally updated [livejournal.com profile] amboseli (Jan. 17, 2009). One year to the day, actually. I haven't given up on that Journal, but it's going to take a lot of time and patience. Thankfully, I seem to be remembering details, and anyway, there's the photographs and video to help.

Speaking of photos, I bought a wall calendar \o/ seeing as I won't be able to print out Excel calendars anymore (also, pretty). It's The Majesty of Trees and would you believe it, there's a photo of an acacia from Amboseli National Park (first photo, second row). No, wait, there's more: There's an acacia that I fucking recognize. Oh gods, I need to check my photos, but it might even be Harry. Or was it Ron? (Yes, Willy and I named trees. Because we're way cool, yo.)

I had coffee with Gabrielle and Dario today, which was Most Excellent. Gods, I needed to talk. (Although yay, I didn't make a social fool of myself, go me!) We set up talk-shop at the new Starbucks - the company's really moving into the country, considering a year or two ago there was only one, at the airport. We talked about jobs, the Netherlands (cool, but not for an extended period of time), Rome (yes, soldiers are being employed by the city, which explains why there were so many with fucking semi's everywhere), and other fun stuff. They're away next weekend, but I'm going to try my best to keep in touch with them both, because they're lovely. (Although boo on them moving to the Hague.)

I haven't done anything job-wise, but at least I'm feeling less like a useless mess, which is nice. All I can do, really, is accept that this is going to be hard and is going to break me into little pieces at times, and then just grab the duct tape and pull myself back together.

I'm low on food (which may be why my head is curling in a corner crying about the caffeine torture), so we'll see what I can whip up. In the meantime, I have State of Play (the show, not the movie, with Simm and Nighy, which will rock all socks) and Tue£day (Simm and Glenister for the win!) as well as Doctor Who goodies. If that doesn't jive, then I can wander around the skip=320 page of [livejournal.com profile] watchfic_dir. (Oh yes, I've been reading. A lot.)

And I realize now that I've never really commented coherently about Watchmen, so a few points:

- The Blue Wang: I have no idea how this was such a big deal. It's cock, people, and it's there, and it's not being zoomed in to. (Although the application of the adjective pendulous might have distracted me at some point.) It's just there. Leave it alone.

Considering the slow-motion and close-up depictions of violence (oh hai broken elbow!) or just plain old carnage (oh hai bleeding stump leg and man on fire! oh hai cutting off of arms!) which I could have lived without, I'm shocked that the image of blue wang from afar made people lose their shit. Or even if they focused on it and giggled like thirteen-year-olds (when not being thirteen-year-olds, mind). Grow up, people. This is one thing I prefer in European movies, where casual nudity isn't a big deal but epic violence is.

- It Was a Long Movie: Looooong. Long like long-cat is long. And that was the original release cut at 162 minutes. (The ultimate cut is 215 minutes.) Some parts we could totally have skipped, or skimmed.

- Where's The Fast-Forward Button?!?: Mainly, the sex scene (the consummated one). Oh my gods, that could so have been made better, or shorter, or both. And the music! I might be able to handle it on third viewing, but the first time I heard that song to that scene, I almost took a step back with a very wtf face. Some of the Comedian flashbacks felt a bit long or unnecessary, and I'm sure other bits could have shaved a few minutes.

- Conspiracies, Oh Gods: I fail at following these, and it took me three viewings to realize what the list Eddie was crying over was for. And yet I'm still not clear on how Adrian knew that Eddie knew... I'm glad, though, to know (from [livejournal.com profile] made_of_fail_pc's comments) that I'm allowed to be a bit confused because some conspiracy bits were glossed over or given at lightnig speed.

- The Sloooow-Mooootion: Neat in some places (even though it made me go, "Argh! No! I don't want to see that wound develop in slow motions!") and jolting in others (Laurie turning away from the fireball was cool, but the switch to normal speed threw me).

- Narm: I giggled at bits I shouldn't have giggled, and they weren't blue-bits. The orgasmic flame-throwing, for one, and Rorschach's "No, no, no, stupid, stupid, STUPID," were funny and should not have been.

- Jeffrey Dean Morgan: He made me not like his character, and even squirm uncomfortably at the sight of him. Eddie was a horrible bastard sleeze, and that's great for JDM, except I can't really enjoy any of his scenes (except the first) because my brain can do nothing but scream, "Omg you bastard!"

- The Mohinder Effect: I found it hard to follow Rorschach's monologues. I just let the sound wash over me, which isn't good because exposition is happening. And yet my brain just goes out the window with the Comedian. Curiously, though, during the interrogation scene - especially the bits where we can see Rorscach talking - I'm all ears, focused on him 100%. Maybe it's because the blankness of face helps with the blankness of expression, or because I like trying to see a glimmer of emotion in Rorschach's face, but whatever it is, I'm listening.

- Accents Die: Apparently Adrian had an American accent in public and a German accent in private, although I had to focus - knowing this fact - to notice. He only goes American once or twice, and the rest of the time it's just English with a touch of German on the pronunciation of numbers or some other detail like that.

- We Were Young, Once: The flashbacks were brilliant and coherent and informative and short all in one. Good job on that. (Although could we not have cheek-biting? Ear-biting I can live with, but who aims for the cheek? Crazy kid Walter, that's who.)

- Locked in Here With Me: Not surprisingly, my favorite bit involves Rorschach in prison. Even if I have to look away and cover my ears at one part. The whole thing wins.

- Version 2.0: I want to hug and squish Dan. That is all.
