I meant to post stuff about this week, about work and meetings and more work and meeting the Volunteers and Interns group and events and ridiculously cheap croissants+coffees and how mad skillz (mad, yes, but really not skills at all of any worth) gained through being in fandom actually are applicable at work (in that I'm going to try and edit a trailer out of a video we want to distribute), or about yesterday's escapades to nearby cities, or about how everyone under this roof is a bitter twisted evil mean things, or how it is so blody hot here.

Instead of all that fun stuff, I'm just going to drop y'all some memes and go crawl under the bed. You know how people steal kidneys? If they stole my uterus, the way I'm feeling now, I wouldn't complain. Hell, I might even send them a thank-you card.

One of the neighbours is playing Billie Holiday and I can hear it almost perfectly thanks to the acoustics of the back of the apartment. It's lovely: a hot summer afternoon, the wails of a trumpet, and Billie. ♥

I meant to watch X-Men: The Last Stand last weekend but was blocked by Italy. Yes, that's right. The entire country prevented me from watching the movie. Why? Dubbing. The film was in nigh every cinema in the city, and they were all dubbed. It takes less time to put up subtitles than it does to dub, and with the international and tourist audience - plus lanaguage purists - there's definitely a market for it. But nooooo. The one cinema that plays original language films - in all of its two halls - is stil behind the times. Alas, no gay-subtext for me :(

I've also been thinking quite a bit about my Nanowrimos, trying to find the overall theme or arc or something for all the little images in my head. So far, no luck, but more ideas nonetheless. I keep meaning to write them down here but OMG LOOK AT THE TIME. Ahem.

So again, not dead. Also, curiously enough, not exhausted. But work doesn't leave me much time for posting and surfing and Links of the Day, which is why sometimes this past week I've looked at the bed and said, "Ah, screw it, let's sleep." (Or rewatch Doctor Who Season 5, and sputter about things we still don't know about River - what did the Bishop in Time of Angels mean? - or about the finale - why 26/06/2010?)

However, I can report back that work is going well. So far it's still a lot of reading - although now they've brought down and hooked up my computer in my new shared office, so yay typing and oncoming productivity! I attended some presentations last week, and had an informal lunch meeting, and have a meeting tomorrow (where I think I'm supposed to introduce myself to the larger team). I've met more people than I could possibly ever remember and they've all been nice. Ah, international environment, how I've missed you! I've walked miles going from one part of the building to the other, getting lost in corridors and on staircases. I swear it's a bloody TARDIS-baby.

Last week I kept getting home absolutely exhausted - all read-out and socialized-out and languaged-out. Also, curisouly, with a raving desire for creativity. I've worked on that Not What I Had In My Head drawing (and worked on it so much it went from decent-enough to shite and back again) and have discovered The Coloured Pencils as well as the Badly Mangled Watercolours from my childhood. I also have charcoal pencils, so at least one version of the drawing is going to be passable. I even took Betsy out for a bit - didn't play her or even tuner her up, but I did wipe the dirt of her poor little guitar body.

In other news, have some links. Lots and lots of links.

Wow. I haven't posted in a week. What that primarily means is that the Links of the Day is going to scare the bejeezus out of you, but it also means there's some catching up to do on events in Sickleland.

I've been watching quite a bit of John Simm things recently, by which I mean two, really. There's Mad Dogs, which just finished its first season's four-episode run. I really liked it, mainly because it was two of my favorite actors and two other actors I rather like either parading about shirtless or panicking over corpses. Either way, I'm good. Also, it's John Simm, people. (I also love you, Philip Glenister!)

The other Simm thing I'm watching is Sex Traffic which is very much making me go D: because it's, well, about the sex traffic business, showing two women trapped into prostitution by false promises of being taken to London. It doesn't skimp on the depiction of the horrid treatment, either. Makes my having watched The Secret Diary of a Call Girl yesterday bizarre in comparison.

As a society we still have a lot of improvements to make, but the fact that there are people who feel safe enough mentioning their same sex relationships in conversation with a complete stranger means that there's no doubt about it, there have been improvements since I was a kid. And that's a good, comforting sign, even if those improvements are taking more time than they should <3.

Sickle's Review of Repo! The Genetic Opera:
  • It is awesome. (Trailer) I remember the crazy mad hype on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets months before the movie came out, and believe be, the hype is totally founded. (Unless cracky science fiction dramatic slasher opera isn't really your thing - like my brother - then you might not like it.) It's rocking fun, the story is good (and easy to follow in that characters are well-introduced and get back-stories) and the songs are brilliant

  • Speaking of, Zydrate Anatomy is still the best song there, although I Didn't Know I'd Love You So Much is rapidly becoming my also-favorite.

  • And speaking of Zydrate Anatomy, can I just say? Graverobber is made of unf.

  • Anthony Stewart Head was spectacular. His singing - and yes, he does have an album out - his acting, everything. Oh man, I've missed seeing him. (This is why I need to watch Merlin, I know.) I didn't even have to choose between hopeing for him being Giles-like or him being Ripper-like. (And, um, Sexy Evil Voice is Sexy.)

  • And again, speaking of Anthony Head, I didn't know his brother was Murray Head, of One Night in Bangkok. That is... Wow. That's a classic, that is.

Sickle Wields the Science Stick: On icanhascheezburger, someone posts a video: Fennec Fox Demands Love. Cue the "OMGWTF that's a wild animal, why is it captivity!" voices and the "it's totally domesticated, no worries mate, have some fallacies" maddness, and I back away slowly to shake my head (and Science Stick!) far from the drama. My references are all going to be Wiki because I have neither the time nor patience to pull up relevant journals and I am not doing a literature review to shake the Science Stick over the concepts of domestication, tameness, and similar. Sickle's Brief Review of The Crazies:
  • I loved this movie. Loved loved loved it. It had heart, it had gore, it had the real sort of horror and the movie horror, it had action, and it flowed. Also, what's not to love about what is basically a zombie movie?

  • What I mean about the "real sort of horror" is that there's a lot of scenes - and implied scenes - of people doing absolutely horrific things. Spoilers )

  • That said, the "movie horror" is very well done too. The scares and traps and jumps are good, and the slight paranoia that starts halfway through is a nice touch, although it never really takes flight. The deaths are good and showy, the gore is bloody (and at one point a bit too gorey for my tastes - mild spoiler )). Most characters didn't to ridiculously stupid endangerment things, and I actually cared about them, even if just because they'd managed to not die by the slimmest of margins.

  • There's a few snags in the backdrop storyline spoilers )

Today at the internship I returned to the translations, which is sort of a relief on account of the lack of interminable scanning, and on the other hand, it's me, back where I started. I need this oompf to get me a little bit further now.

There was another metro&bus strike this morning, which meant I got to go to the office's neighbourhood a full hour before work actually started and, plus, I got to freeze my bum off sitting and walking around the sad, empty little streets.

Mom's off to Spain starting this morning, so it's just my Dad and me until Wednesday. I trust we won't starve, although to hear my mother speak and see her stock the freezer, you'd think we didn't know how to feed ourselves. Mind you, I think I'm having McD's tomorrow.

Tomorrow, speaking of, I'm going to head over to the far reaches of the city and try and get my fiscal number. It will undoubtably involve a lot of waiting and hopefully not too much paperwork. Beurocracy for the not at all win.

I've spent the afternoon revelling in having the house to myself and working on almost a week's worth of Links of the Day (oh, compulsive organization!) On Sunday Dad and I are going to see a Swan lake ballet showing - we managed to nab free tickets from our landlady for some reason. I think I might force myself to go jogging sometimes in the weekend too, and I have to write a comment in a Goethe forum for my German homework (how wack is that?).

In other news, I'm dying to finish The Pillars of the Earth and hey, new Supernatural this week again! \o/ I'm really looking forward to seeing more of Puppy!Sam. Ah, it's almost like seeing Season 1 Sam all over again! (Except he doesn't have the adorable bangs of adorableness.)

This week seems to be the week of Good and Rarely-Had Food, considering yesterday's the chocolate mousse, huevos rancheros (fried eggs and fried corn flour tortillas? Heaven!) Plus, Dad brought home tamales this week because his office got together and ordered some made. I haven't had tamales since what was probably the last century, and these were alright. What I really miss from Mexico - apart from the deliscious sandwiches they made at my school shop and Pelón Pelo Rico - are falutas. Oh gods, what I wouldn't do for one of those... Today we continued the food trend with roast lamb, which is something we'd usually have in the summers in Spain and I'd wait for every year. Wee little lamb ribs are so deliscious! I don't care how cute they are!

In other - more international - news, Egypt is happening. In the more personal - potentially selfish - news version of this, because Egypt is happening, and other countries are also happening, the project I was working on - that job I had - has been cancelled. I'm going to get paid for January, but that's it. Back to the dead-end internship. *tries to kick self in the pants and get a move on with the job hunt* *fails miserably*

Yesterday I watched my first ever episode of Private Practice. I'd been seeing the promo for the episode all week for 4x7 and thought, well damn, that much drama has to be seen. I was a bit sad to see that Tim Daly wasn't as astoundingly hot as I remembered him from the Grey's Anatomy episodes 3x22-23 (but then, it's been 3 years). I mean, look at this sexy thing! embeded )

Well, the episode was good and dramatic and all that jazz but I stopped caring for a good long while because all I could do was flail and point and squee things that sounded like "Nicholas Brendon!" and "Xander!" Oh, it was so good to see him on the screen again! I haven't seen Nicholas in anything since Buffy ended, and it was so strange to see him even more grown up - where those grey hairs?!? Plus, it was absolutely delicious to see him be evil. I had a massive crush on Xander in early Buffy (well, until Angel swept me off my feet with the brooding angst). It was 1x06 The Pack that really kick-started the mad squee. (Even though it also peeved me the hell off because hyena packs are matriarchies and the males run away in terror from the females.) Even way back in 1997, I had a thing for lanky evil guys. Just look at the sexy! embeded )

Curious Sickle Fact: I always thought Nicholas Brendon looked a lot like Raine Maida (of the band Our Lady Peace), although this might have been influenced by my learning of the two's existence at the same time. However, the best evidence I can offer: Read more... )

You'll never guess what I did today! I did stuff! I actually did something and that Something was accomplished!

It involved bureaucracy. )

Today is - or rather was, by the time I get this posted - my brother's birthday. Even though he's way over in far off lands currently struggling with the snowpocalypse, we celebrated the traditional way - food (chocolate mousse whatwhat!) and booze. Well, we called him, too. He's 33 now, which makes me feel so, so old. In less than 3 years, I'm going to be 30. I can't even begin to imagine what I want my life to be like by then. I can't even get myself out of this rut, it seems. They say all states are temporary, but damn it if they don't feel permanent when you're living them. But damn it, I CAN HAS HOPE. AND OOMPF. A Day in the Life of the Sickle:
  • I've been reading The Perks of being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Actually, I've only gotten two sittings in, and both times I've been fighting tears the whole while I was reading it. It's not even that particularly sad or dramatic, just inciteful and beautiful and ow my heart. I knew I was going to love this book from the quotes on [livejournal.com profile] literaryquotes. I've been wanting to read it for years and years now.

  • I went to the Goethe Institute today to register for a course which starts Monday. (Eeeeeep!) I told them I'd gotten my Zertifikat Deutsch in 2005, and that my last German class (in 2007) had been a B2.2. level. I took their placement test just in case, because it'd been a few years since my German saw the light of day and all. So the test is 99% grammar and 1% Short Text Comprehension. My resulting level? B1.1. FAAAAAIIIIIIL. I AM A FAILURE. That's basically what my mind went to at light speed. And while I get it, intellectually, that of course I lost some German, and of course it's rusty, and that if you don't use it you lose it, but OMG FAILURE FAILURE FAILURE. Anyway, I also got to talk to one of the teachers (who spoke extra-fast on purpose) and she said that my comprehension and speaking was fantastic, it's just my grammar, so I can take the B1.2 course and do extra work on the side to spruce up my grammer. Stupid grammar.

  • What this means is that between the book and the test, I'm all a-wibble. The win, it is not here.

Castle, 3x12:
  • Espositoooooo! Rawr.

I need to learn more Chinese. It's a very satisfying language to be angry in. Have you ever seen the tone marks on romanized Mandarin? You could hurt yourself on diacriticals like that. Ranting in Chinese is like riding rough over a rocky mountain sentence, with bad shocks and nothing but a pile of exclamation points to stop you at the end. Whoever you're yelling at just has to hang on for dear life and hope to get through it without hitting anything flammable.

There are some things about DVD bundles that make me wish I had a) money to burn and b) access to ways I could burn that money to get shiny things. Some episodes in Supernatural, for example, make me yearn for a chance to listen to commentaries.

Unfortunately, apart from [livejournal.com profile] tracy_loo_who's detailed flailings, I haven't been able to find anything on Kripke, Singer and Edlund's The End commentary. I've googled and tag-haunted until my fingers fell off, and nothing. I'm this close to contacting [livejournal.com profile] stir_of_echoes, who was fantastic enough to transcribe the commentary for What is and What Should Never Be but I'm scared of coming off as crazy or demanding or whatnot. So can anyone offer any help on that?

You know what else is bothering me by being all "na na!" non-attainable? (No, it isn't any of the boys of Supernatural, because there has to be at least the illusion of attainability for there to be cause for the "na na!" dance.) It's this podbook and its MP3. I've downloaded both of them, but I can't get them to open. Winzip keeps saying "cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive" and WinRAR says "the archive is either in unknown format or damaged". Now, I've downloaded both files a number of times, so I know they're getting in alright, so I don't know. Is this happening to anyone else? I'd just like to check before I go all "waaah, I cannae get podbook!" to the audiofic archive.

...I'm wondering whether there's any community where I could pimp out my Devour picspam review. Just because it took so much time to put together... Must investigate further.

Quote of the Day: Book Covers For Book Lovers
There is an unfair stigma attached to loneliness, I think. It makes people feel bad for you, but at the same time admitting to those feelings makes you look needy, like you’re asking to be saved from yourself. Admitting to being lonely seems like a surefire way to stay that way.

ZOMG. *flops about in exhaustion* I'm back. I'm all caught up on the flisters except for the [livejournal.com profile] spnnewsletter. I'm still behind on the lengthly replies of emails. I'm behind in Supernatural squeage, although I watched it last night. I'm also behind in the psotage of photos and recounting of tourism exploits, but that's going to be ages yet. I'm just going to post this before everything explodes.

Yesterday - back when "yesterday" was still Thursday - I saw there was this Supernatural/True Blood crossover fanvid for Sam/Eric and at first I was all o.0 and "that wouldn't work" and "dude, it's Eric," and then I was all 0.0 because hello, demon blood and on nom nom and ZOMG YES. So now I kinda sort need fanfic. *sigh* ETA: And then, on Friday, I realized I had to write said fic. Also pending.
