bending_sickle: (Mark is made of awesome)
I'm still in my "watch all the Mark Sheppard things!" mode. I've followed Mark into some amazing new shows - Leverage and White Collar and Battlestar Galactica - and into some watchable ones - Warehouse 13 and Chuck, for example. Then there's Bionic Woman and Middle Man, which I plowed through out of sheer devotion to Mark's minor character. Oh, Mark...

Right now, I'm watching 24 and I almost wish I were watching Middle Man. At least that one was amusing. For one, it doesn't help that this is totally not my style of show. There's no fantasy and no science, so that's me clutching at staws to find something I can invest in. I'm shit out of luck doing that with Mark's character because the first episode he's in, he's hunkered down in a crowd, head in his hands. The second one, he's got tiny scenes of sitting in a car. (Sitting well and lovely, but still.) Right now I'm hanging onto Grey's Anatomy's Teddy and The Lord of the Rings Sam to get me through. That and the awesome character Chloe O'Brian.

But I can handle that, no problem. What I cannot handle is how the male characters are responding to and treating two female characters. Read more... )

In other news, I've watched all of the guest-starring-Mark-Sheppard episodes of BSG and am still a bit on the fence over whether I like the show or not. I can see that it's good, but it hasn't quite gripped me. Still, I've been reading Television Without Pity's recaps of the episodes I watched, and apart from being astonishingly well-written in the analytical and poetic sense of it all, they make me want to watch the show in full, if only to get a sense of these vast sweeping themes. So BSG is still on the List of TV Shows to Watch.

However, that's not what I want to share today. What I want to share is reason 2349 why Romo Lampkin is awesome.

He's handcuffed and has a big bad soldier with an even bigger, badder gun aimed at his *squints eyes* well, ass, really. And you know what? He kills that solder dead. With a pen. A stolen pen.

Did I mention he's a lawyer?

* Battlestar Galactica
bending_sickle: (Obsessive)
Sickle's Random Tid-Bits:
  • I finally watched an episode of Battlestar Galactica, which I've been meaning to watch in full for ages. Obviously it was a Mark Sheppard episode - 3x18, "The Son Also Rises" - and he was basically the reason I watched it. And, it turns out, the only reason I liked it.

Sure, I was jumping smack in the middle of the third season with only a basic knowledge of the whole series' storyline, but I didn't enjoy it because I got lost. And it wasn't because I didn't feel for the characters, because I did, for some, even without knowing their life history. I don't know, I think it was just all the politics and intrigue and all that type of happenings that made me not like it, because I've figured out that that is just not my genre. Thrillers and spies and politics - even if they are in space! - just isn't my thing.

But that said, it really is a good show. Good pacing, good look, excellent writing. And by that I mean I absolutely adored all of Romo Lampkin [Mark Sheppard]'s speeches. His character had a slight Irish lilt to it, which was charming once I actually figured out what accent it was I was hearing - because previous to that I was just all ears going, "What? What accent is that? Where is that from? Is that, what?"

I actually had to extract some of his speeches and made them into MP3s (wanna listen?) because I just loved them so much. Mark, damnit, do audiobooks.

So in sum, I'll be watching more BSG, but only the kind with Mark Sheppard in it, until and if I get hooked on it and want to watch the whole thing.

Oh, and on a completely different not, the president? Couldn't keep her apart from Doctor Who's Sarah Jane Smith in my head. I'm okay with that.

  • The newspaper did an article on prostitution zones in Rome, and so I learned that there are two zones in my neighbourhood. There's seven women right around our place - which doesn't surprise me, as I knew of five and actually walk by their hang-out place which is a little park every day to and from work - and some twenty-one a bit farther away - coincidently, where one night my mother and I were walking and were called at from a car and we knew they'd mistaken us for prostitutes. So that makes almost thirty prostitutes right in my area. Huh.

  • One of my co-workers, who's camping out at a friend's place until he can find one of his own, got robbed. In his apartment. At night. While he was sleeping. Someone ninjaed in through an open second-story window and took his friend's TV, his iPhone and wallet. Apart from being freaked the fuck out over someone being in his house while he's sleeping, he didn't have a dime on him. He went to his folk's for the weekend, to recover a bit until he could move in to his new place. The worst thing? This is totally not an unheard of or even uncommon thing in Rome.

  • I just realized today that it's going to be ten years since I graduated from highschool and started university, and I've got a friend who's at that stage right now. (The best thing? We're both like, "What age difference?") Ah, squishy ♥ And since it's that season, there's a few Tumblr things about starting university which mean a lot because I can remeber it all happening, and because I'm seeing it happening to my squishy. So this.

I'm currently watching Leverage (or rather, Mark Sheppard's episodes of) and the fandoms are bleeding together again. For one, Mark, who's in everything, so that's expected. Well, his suprise Mandarin wasn't, and oh it made me so happy to hear him speak in Mandarin. (Oh, Badger!). Then there's Angel's Lindsay (whose long hair has to go) and Supernatural's Jake (my favourite, by far). Speaking of Lindsay and Jake (and no, I don't know their Leverage names), they're my bro-OTP for the show. Seriously, they're like Ryan and Esposito! D'aw!

Alright, so I was going to flail about Misha's stint on Ghostfacers which was hilarious and unfilicious but my flailing is now of a different kind because all the links are gone. GIF reaction )

In other news, this fanart crossover of mine has 177 notes. *flails* Ahem. *more flailing* See, I love this about Tumblr. I don't need to pimp out my stuff - just tag it - and people like and reblog, whereas on Livejournal I'd have to pimp out on a number of communities - feeling like I'm spamming everywhere - and gods only know when the last time I got a pingback was... So yays Tumblr!

So, fandoms are colliding. Case in point:
  • Bones having Angel's Angel and Hamilton together in a scene.

  • Medium having Firefly's Badger and Niska together in a scene.

I just...thought I'd point that out? Because I kinda want to do art about it but not now?

Speaking of Medium, I watched the third episode with Mark Sheppard (although really, the first one is a lie, because it has Mark saying two lines and then it's nothing but sitting there staring at the screen, consumed by lust, waiting for his character to show up again and he never does, at least not Mark-shaped). It made me rant at the screen.

So I'm going to rant at the screen again, in typed form. Because GRR ARGH. In which a woman is in labour and I do not agree with solution - and sentiments. )

Went out with my mom and dad today in the afternoon with a mission: to buy shoes. (We've got this thing where if we pay more than N on a single receipt, we get tax exception. The "pay more than N" thing is new and unusual and wasn't a requirement in other countries. What can you do?) And lo and behold! Shoes were had! Two pairs! This is like a miracle with a cherry on top. So I can has shoes.

Then we had ice cream and how sad is your fruit when the melon ice cream is better than your morning's melon? I'm not going to complain much, though, 'cause we've been snarfing down mangoes like crazy and they've been delicious and straight from Pakistan, sold by Pakistanis over near what we all call "the ethnic market" but has an actual name. Sadly, though, mangoes season is over until around September. Curse my undying desire for tropical fruit!

Then there was a bra shopping - I'd been wanting a summer-appropriate bra for a while, and we happened upon a yarn-and-thread-and-socks-and-bras-and-pijamas-and-so-on shop, which has a name in Spanish and Italian and I'm damned 'cause I can't remember it at all, and what do you know, bras were purchased! In fact, the same style bra as the shop lady - who'd been having a cigarette break - was wearing, and the same brand as I myself was wearing (and it was pretty awesome that the lady knew which model it was just from my bra strap), which is the same brand that makes my mom squee because it is just that good. (Said brand is Simone Perele, by the by.)

Tomorrow we're going to Anguillara which we've technically already seen, although that was a raining-heavily, try-and-make-out-the-lake day where we arrived, had a cuppa, and left. But tomorrow's going to be splendid, 'cause we're having lunch with my ex-superivser - the really awesome one from my internship volunteer thing. \o/

I've also caught up on the flist. I still have a load of SPN tabs open, but hey, something's something. There's still this week's supply of Tumblr to wade through... Damn it, Internet! Why you so full of stuff?

I meant to post stuff about this week, about work and meetings and more work and meeting the Volunteers and Interns group and events and ridiculously cheap croissants+coffees and how mad skillz (mad, yes, but really not skills at all of any worth) gained through being in fandom actually are applicable at work (in that I'm going to try and edit a trailer out of a video we want to distribute), or about yesterday's escapades to nearby cities, or about how everyone under this roof is a bitter twisted evil mean things, or how it is so blody hot here.

Instead of all that fun stuff, I'm just going to drop y'all some memes and go crawl under the bed. You know how people steal kidneys? If they stole my uterus, the way I'm feeling now, I wouldn't complain. Hell, I might even send them a thank-you card.

One of the neighbours is playing Billie Holiday and I can hear it almost perfectly thanks to the acoustics of the back of the apartment. It's lovely: a hot summer afternoon, the wails of a trumpet, and Billie. ♥

I meant to watch X-Men: The Last Stand last weekend but was blocked by Italy. Yes, that's right. The entire country prevented me from watching the movie. Why? Dubbing. The film was in nigh every cinema in the city, and they were all dubbed. It takes less time to put up subtitles than it does to dub, and with the international and tourist audience - plus lanaguage purists - there's definitely a market for it. But nooooo. The one cinema that plays original language films - in all of its two halls - is stil behind the times. Alas, no gay-subtext for me :(

I've also been thinking quite a bit about my Nanowrimos, trying to find the overall theme or arc or something for all the little images in my head. So far, no luck, but more ideas nonetheless. I keep meaning to write them down here but OMG LOOK AT THE TIME. Ahem.

So again, not dead. Also, curiously enough, not exhausted. But work doesn't leave me much time for posting and surfing and Links of the Day, which is why sometimes this past week I've looked at the bed and said, "Ah, screw it, let's sleep." (Or rewatch Doctor Who Season 5, and sputter about things we still don't know about River - what did the Bishop in Time of Angels mean? - or about the finale - why 26/06/2010?)

However, I can report back that work is going well. So far it's still a lot of reading - although now they've brought down and hooked up my computer in my new shared office, so yay typing and oncoming productivity! I attended some presentations last week, and had an informal lunch meeting, and have a meeting tomorrow (where I think I'm supposed to introduce myself to the larger team). I've met more people than I could possibly ever remember and they've all been nice. Ah, international environment, how I've missed you! I've walked miles going from one part of the building to the other, getting lost in corridors and on staircases. I swear it's a bloody TARDIS-baby.

Last week I kept getting home absolutely exhausted - all read-out and socialized-out and languaged-out. Also, curisouly, with a raving desire for creativity. I've worked on that Not What I Had In My Head drawing (and worked on it so much it went from decent-enough to shite and back again) and have discovered The Coloured Pencils as well as the Badly Mangled Watercolours from my childhood. I also have charcoal pencils, so at least one version of the drawing is going to be passable. I even took Betsy out for a bit - didn't play her or even tuner her up, but I did wipe the dirt of her poor little guitar body.

In other news, have some links. Lots and lots of links.

I did a picspam of Mal's recent-past scenes in Firefly's "Out of Gas". (Of course I did, it's 3 am!) It's nothing artsy - I just wanted to get the images and the story down, just as a quick "this is what happened" and "this is what it looked like" to accompany my All Things Copper fic. Obviously, there are massive spoilers. )

It's my favourite - well, of two - episode of Firefly. That is to say, I love this one because it breaks my heart (oh come on, you listen to Nathan's little whines of pain without crying), whereas I love Jaynestown because it is hi-larious. (Well, right until Jayne breaks my heart too.)

I've been on a Firefly rewatch binge, on account of my editing old Firefly stories. I'd forgotten how much I liked Jayne. (For entirely shallow reasons, sure, but they're such good reasons.)

I also recently watched the trailer for Mark Sheppard's new movie (and Sheppard senior too!) and was struck by a curious similarity. Well, alright, not so much similarity as "Oh look, he's behind a desk and being awesome! Oh look, here too!" If any man could swagger whilst sitting behind a desk, Mark is it. Shame I can't remember if we've ever seen Crowley sitting behind a desk. We didn't with Canton. Oh well, here is Mark Sheppard, sitting behind a desk in 2002 and 2011. Enjoy. )

Sickle's Disjointed Rambles:
  • It's so windy here that a potted plant with a huge geranium has fallen, breaking off some glorious flowers and spreading dirt all over the balcony.

  • My left cornea has decided that sudden, random, sharp pain is the way to go. It was really bad this morning, and when I took out my contact and irrigated the area with artificial tears, the bastard stung even more. Optifree, you're supposed to soothe irritated eyes, not make it hurt more!

  • Still not sure whether the cream cheese icing is good or not. Granted, I made it haphazardly, but I can't decide!

  • The house is very empty and I'm apparently crap at time management.

  • Doctor Who's "The Doctor's Wife" was awesome, even if I did figure out who Idriss was the moment the TARDIS powered down.

Thoughts on Castiel's Season Arc:

I've been scared for Castiel and his season arc for a while now, terrified that they're going to make him the villain, or have him do unforgivable things in the eyes of the Winchesters and the audience. I am now terrified. People have been theorizing that Castiel is this season's Lucifer, and now it's all I can see coming.
