It's been ages since I last wrote a proper post. Weeks, even. Hoenstly, there's not been all that much going on, and what has is either work-related or stuff I'd rather not remember. Read more... )

I read this post by Tumblr's crowleyismyco-pilot (who is awesome) on the why behind her love and adoration for all things Mark Sheppard (except possibly it wasn't this post but one like it or maybe I just can't remmeber things anymore), and has finally pushed me into writing about something I've been meaning to write about for a while. In other, fannish, news:
- Ringer wins all the things, including my heart.
- Torchwood: Miracle Day was an excercise of meh-ness concluding in one final burst of "oh no you di'n't" (with a little bit of "Care Bear Stare saves the day, again" facepalming).
- Doctor Who's "The Girl Who Waited" broke my heart into a million little pieces.
- I'll be missing Supernatural's 7x01 next week, which means that a) I get to wait two more weeks until Ye Great Emotional Car Crash, b) I'll get to watch 7x01 and 7x02 back-to-back, and c) I'll be gone when the internet implodes. None of this is actually good.

My head is all fire and fucking molten nails this morning. I am the Good Ship Righteous Fucking Indignation. My threshold for douchebags will stand at zero for the foreseeable future. We're talking hellfire-and-brimstone Old Testament shit. Because this is how I grow up. Because this is how I develop. Because I am the sort of person who has more followers than friends. Because I genuinely enjoy sitting in my room for days and doing nothing but watching movies and listening to music and reading. Because isolation has been my best friend since I was about five. Because I look out my window at the sun and I hear the birds singing and I just shut the god damned curtains. Because... Because... Because this is who I am and this is how I’m living.

I went running today instead of to the movies with mom today, because she's been having tachycardia since last this morning, and that not even two weeks since the last time she had it. So, not good.

Not much other news, apart from ye gods am I getting tired of writing up Links of the Day - mainly because I don't have time to even check the links out myself for more than a skim. Yeah, y'all think I read all the fics I list? No, alas, there's not enough time for that. In terms of fic, the LotD is more my wish list than my done list. (And trust me, those lists are real. Not just that, but I've got a document saved, called "Fics to Read". So I mean it when I say I want to read these things.) It makes me sad that I can't read all the fics I list. But then, there's a reason it's the links of the day and not the recommendations of the day. It's just a daily bookmark.

It's just that with pingback I've been getting the occasional "wee! thanks for reccing me!" which, well, okay, it's sort of what I've done, you're welcome, I'm just spreading the word, but then sometimes it's with the added "I hope you liked it" or similar and then I get all guilty if I haven't read the fic. So yeah.

Basically, the LotD is me closing tabs of things I would really like to have the time to delve into deeper, or tabs of things I thought were cool, or interesting, or that other people might be interested in, or whatever. The small text is a sure sign, though.

And now you know. And hopefully I can stop feeling guilty about it.

Meme: 30-Day Fandom vs. Personal Meme:

Day 29: One of your favourite pastimes, and which character do you think would enjoy it the most?

Currently it's editing a video, so I guess Misfits's Simon would like it, seeing as he does it himself.

Day 30: You get to either have the powers of any character from a fandom, have their looks, or have them be a real person and become your lover. Which/who do you choose?

Oh, like picking which option of these should be a contest? Would you rather do awesome stuff, be pretty, or have a good lay? Hmmm... *le sarcasm*

So, powers. Obviously. And, just as obviously, True Blood's Sam's shapeshifting abilities. Because it's only been my wish to have that power since like, the womb.

Mother: Hey, you know your green dress, with the squares?
Sickle: The what?
Mother: The winter dress.
Sickle: It's brown.
Mother: You haven't worn it all winter.
Sickle: I thought it was fancy dress.
Mother: Oh, no. It's your only winter dress. Why didn't you wear it all winter?
Sickle: Why are you telling me this now? when it's spring?
Mother: I couldn't very well say you hadn't worn it all winter in the middle of winter, could I?
Sickle: No, you could have said, "Hey, remember that dress? Why don't you wear it sometime?"
Mother: God forbid I meddle in your affairs and tell you what to wear.
Sickle: But waiting and watching me do something wrong, then saying, "Hah! You did something wrong!" is so much better?

...I just, ugh.

Things have been horrible lately, especially last night and this morning, due to horrid, horrid fights with mom which started off over my wearing gloves on a Spring night or a black dress this morning and escalated into how she should've thrown me out of the house at 18 and how I'm obviously insane. In an attempt to compensate the sheer amount of suck, I refused to go to my German class today and instead hunted down a candy store and sat in the Piazza del Popolo eating sour gummies. Tomorrow I have a meeting with a guy from Organization (whom my mother met a the French cinema) so that he can "inspire" me and tell me how wonderful it is to work at Organization, as if I haven't been trying to get an internship there for a year.

Today was a crap day. Nothing was done, not a shit was given, and woe was had. My head still hurts from sorta-not crying on my have-to-get-out walk.

And my mom needs to learn that saying on Monday that there's "a Quebecois film she wants to watch" and on Wednesday that "it's on Satursday at nine" and on Saturday that "she's going to watch a movie" does not mean that she's making plans with me to watch a movie today at 9 pm. You actually have to say the words that mean, "let's go watch [movie] [date] at [time]." You can't have plans with people if you don't make them.

In other news, this is why I still haven't watched Paranormal Activity 2, as told by ambrina on Tumblr. I really want to watch it, and it's right there, watchable, but just the thought makes me burrow into my blankets. It's the poltergeist thing, especially with the bed sheets. That's the kind of thing that freaks me out. (See also: the possession scene in The Exorcism of Emily Rose.)

Meme: 30-Day Fandom vs. Personal Meme:

Once again, I forget things for previous answers to this meme. For Day 4, I forgot to add Modern Family's Phil Dunphy and Medium's Joe Dubois, both normal, wonderful husbands.

I have no idea - or have forgotten - what my friends are like when they're mad. And anyway, no one person is angry in one single way. It depends on the circumstances. There's frustrated-mad, hurt-mad, jealous-mad, confused-mad, I-love-you-but-mad, and so on. Read more... )

Today, I went out for a walk in the afternoon in the hopes of "raising my spirits" and "clearing my head" and all that other stuff walks are supposed to do, and instead got rained on for the most part, stood under a tiny overhang from a shop while two couples at two different points started arguing bitterly and loudly and that's why I wanted out of the house, universe! and waited for a bus which would not come because it doesn't run Sundays, until I took another one which took me sort of home. Remind me never to take an evening constitutional ever again.

Dad's got Dupuytren's contracture (or, more awesomely, "Viking disease"), which is where "the tough connective tissue within one's hand becomes abnormally thick which can cause the fingers to curl and can result in impaired function of the fingers, especially the small and ring fingers." He's looking into treatment and surgery options.

Now, there's no real known cause for this disease, although there's a lot of finger pointing, particularly at "trauma, diabetes, alcoholism, epilepsy therapy with phenytoin and liver disease." But the interesting thing is that 60-70% of those afflicted have a genetic predisposition to D's c. You know what this means, right? I am totally losing at the Genetic Roulette here. Where my genetics might hurt me. )

I woke up barely on the right side of am today, on account of going to sleep around 3 am last night, on account of that unending meme followed by Grey's Anatomy. (Can I just say, I love Mark and Cally. I don't care whether they're just friends or lovers or raising children together, I love how they were together and what they mean to each other. Excuse me while I covet that sort of relationship.)

When my parents got back this morning from walking around on the beach - a fact I wasn't aware of until they came back, of course, which made me feel loved and oh hai sarcasm - I wasn't the most chipper of things. Then, well, my parents got back, which made the value of the chipperness fall quite a bit more, on account of them - or rather, mom - feeling that I shouldn't participate in family events because I shouldn't be living here anyway and should actually have my own life. Then we're having lunch and the radio decides it hates me and wants to tear my heart into little pieces, because it plays the following three songs: Life by Erykah Badu, Life for Rent by Dido, and Home by Michael Bublé. No cookie for you, radio.

On the plus side, I Did Things today. Granted, those things took a tiny part of the morning and I've done jack squat since then, but still, things were accomplished. Not things I need accomplished (CV rewrite!), or even want (fanfic!), but Things, y'know? They were such small things as cleaning my room - or the floor, at least - and sowing a gaping tear in my purse lining, but they were Things.

Meme: Good Things:

Day 2: Roast lamb, Supernatural and Grey's Anatomy. That was good.
Day 3 The doing of things. That was also good. Also, The Secret Diary of a Call Girl 4x01.

I have a feeling this meme isn't going to shine very much.

Today's been a blank day. Rambles and woes. )

Random Thoughts of the Day:
  • All the while I was reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower I not only felt like crying, but also had the strange desire to write out the book as letters and actually send them to someone on the dates the letters were dated.

  • I wonder whether anyone's made the fanmix that Charlie made in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. [livejournal.com profile] likewinning has a fanmix, but it's original. I'd just really like to hear the mix tape that Charlie made. I might have to make it myself, I guess...

  • The English language - and infact, every language - really out to have a two forms of "we": one that's inclusive and one that's exclusive, so that you can have the situation where a group of people are together and one says to another, "We're going to a party," and the person knows whether they are included or not. I mean, there should be a "we but not you" and a "we including you" form.

Sickle Shows Signs of Life, Fails Miserably:

  • I'm on Chapter 7 of 13 in the editing of Nanowrimo 2010. It's actually better than my sleep-deprived memories insisted it was, and there's some elements that keep popping up that give it the illusion of a theme. I'm going to give TfSB an edit as well sometime soon, because a) it's embarrassingly full of typos and b) I want my volunteer internship supervisor to read it first before handing over TWSaM. (I've talked about the book with her a lot, and she's been really supportive and interested in it, and would like to read it, so yays!)

  • Watched L'Herrisson yesterday, a French film about a very intelligent little girl bent on committing suicide on her twelfth birthday, the consierge, a quite woman with hidden depths, and the new Japanese neighbour who courts her. It was wonderful and beautiful, even if the ending made me wail against the world.

  • On Tuesday, the students of Rome - and the whole country - went out in a manifestation which blocked the whole of downtown and the metro. This resulted in my first staring at the closed metro station displaying schopero, then taking bus one so I could connect to bus two, except bus one never went to where it was supposed to connect because the whole center was blocked so I ended up taking a really long tour around downtown, across the river, through a couple tunnels, until I finally managed to get off somewhere near the Vatican and Castel Sant Angelo. I walked to where I was supposed to find bus two, but that was closed to traffic, pretty much, so I ended up walking all the way home in the rain. I got home 3:15 hours after I was supposed to, and most of that was walking. I was displeased.

  • I've been scanning documents like mad these past few days, which while boring and on-my-feet work, it has allowed me to catch up on audiobooks and podcasts. I should probably write this is my profile, but I have mad love for Winchester Radio and Monster Talk (science!) and am currently listening to The Vesuvius Club as recommended by [livejournal.com profile] qthewetsprocket

  • About a month ago I had a meet-and-greet with someone from Organization, where I basically handed over my CV and met the interns, whom I had lunch with at the cafeteria. I also got chatted up by the security guard during the half hour I was waiting to be let into the Organization (crazy security measures of crazy) and he gave me his number, but I've let that slide. I've been meaning to write about that for ages, so here it is.

  • I'm going to Chicago on Sunday - my brother's not coming for Christmas, so I'm the official family representative. I'll be back the 17th and [livejournal.com profile] katarinagram's coming the 21st for the holidays, so there is much squee.

Sickle Has A Request: So I finally read through The Last Wild Angel - that story that in a fit of insanity I've decided to try and send to a magazine - enough to edit it a little and put it in manuscript format. However, I have some editorial questions of the "What should I dooooo?" and "Is this okay? Tell me it's okay!" variety. So does anyone care to beta? Please?

Sickle Writes (And Has Another Sort-Of Request): Day before yesterday - because I've been lax in posting - I finally finished typing out the notes I'd made for Time for Something Biblical, listing all the characters', set and plot details. It's on [livejournal.com profile] sickle_stories, but flocked, which y'all know I never do on [livejournal.com profile] bending_sickle, because I'm apparently more paranoid about my half-formed creative ideas being open to the world than I am about my life.

I went to sleep quite late because I just can't come up with a title for the sequel. Time for Something Biblical was such a perfect title, what with the apocalypse and the angel and all. Now I'm scouring the internet and quotes and books for anything that'll work, preferrably starting of with "Time For", and, if I want to be really picky, a Muse lyric - not because I like Muse, because I don't overmuch, but because I did the same with TFSB and its chapter titles and argh.

Random thought: I do really weird fanmixes. I've never done a proper, actually-related-to-fandom fanmix. The best I could do on that front is making a fanmix of all the songs I want to make into fanvids, but that's a bit odd, even for me. My mixes are all about long-distance relationships and obsessive compulsive disorder and chronic homesickness and gods know I might end up doing a mix on fish one of these days. I've already got two three songs in mind, and I didn't even have to think hard: Dawn of BtVS's "Anchovies" song, Monty Python's "Slapping Fish" song, and "It's a Long Way from Amphioxus". Although it hasn't been ages since I last posted, it has been ages since I last did a proper post, what with the telling of things and inner monologues and crack metaphors and things. Unfortunately, this trend will continue for a while yet.

I lie. Have some life stuff. )

In happier news, I'm listening to Dead in the Family, the latest Sookie Stackhouse novel, and I've read the latest Merit (i.e. Chicagoland Vampires) novel, Twice Bitten and I'm watching Grey's Anatomy (now only rarely making me cry!) and I've read the first fic in months - [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift's On the Wire series for The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Seriously, it's been months and months since I did anything but briefly skim through a fic. Most of the ones I link to I barely go so far as to read the summary, although I know from the title or pairing that I want to read it. But I never got the interest to sharped enough to actually muddle through - because I feel like I am muddling through, forcing my tiny little fannish brain to focus - and read it. Which, to be honest, I've been doing a bit with On the Wire - skipping bits, skimming others - but at least I'm not giving up on the story and I'm actually interested in what's happening. That's a good thing.
