It's been ages since I last wrote a proper post. Weeks, even. Hoenstly, there's not been all that much going on, and what has is either work-related or stuff I'd rather not remember. Read more... )

I read this post by Tumblr's crowleyismyco-pilot (who is awesome) on the why behind her love and adoration for all things Mark Sheppard (except possibly it wasn't this post but one like it or maybe I just can't remmeber things anymore), and has finally pushed me into writing about something I've been meaning to write about for a while. (Except, of course, I realize now that I've already written about it all here). Read more... )

In other, fannish, news:
- Ringer wins all the things, including my heart.
- Torchwood: Miracle Day was an excercise of meh-ness concluding in one final burst of "oh no you di'n't" (with a little bit of "Care Bear Stare saves the day, again" facepalming).
- Doctor Who's "The Girl Who Waited" broke my heart into a million little pieces.
- I'll be missing Supernatural's 7x01 next week, which means that a) I get to wait two more weeks until Ye Great Emotional Car Crash, b) I'll get to watch 7x01 and 7x02 back-to-back, and c) I'll be gone when the internet implodes. None of this is actually good.

My head is all fire and fucking molten nails this morning. I am the Good Ship Righteous Fucking Indignation. My threshold for douchebags will stand at zero for the foreseeable future. We're talking hellfire-and-brimstone Old Testament shit. Today, I am the nastiest pirate ship that ever plowed the Seven, and we're out for blood, and there will be rape and pillaging and cities will burn, just because.

...yeah, so I haven't been posting regularly in a while, and that's one part work sucking all my time and energy, one part Tumblr, and one part of "not much going on". Most of my day consists of work, which is currently being mind-numbingly dull, and the rest of it is spent trying not to melt in the unbearable heat. I still post a bit of fanart over on Tumblr, and I've been watching Season 1 of White Collar, which is awesome. It just feels like most of the time I'm desperately trying to keep up with all the things I want to do and just barely keeping my head above water.

Hence the massive LotD below. And the lack of Original Fiction Meme.

In other news, and as evidence that I only got Tumblr for the Dashboard, have some Supernatural and True Blood fanart, both with just a hint of Firefly, because why finish projects when I can just make new ones? *sigh* (Also? Note to self: less contrast is better.) SOILERS - True Blood 4x02 )

Went out with my mom and dad today in the afternoon with a mission: to buy shoes. (We've got this thing where if we pay more than N on a single receipt, we get tax exception. The "pay more than N" thing is new and unusual and wasn't a requirement in other countries. What can you do?) And lo and behold! Shoes were had! Two pairs! This is like a miracle with a cherry on top. So I can has shoes.

Then we had ice cream and how sad is your fruit when the melon ice cream is better than your morning's melon? I'm not going to complain much, though, 'cause we've been snarfing down mangoes like crazy and they've been delicious and straight from Pakistan, sold by Pakistanis over near what we all call "the ethnic market" but has an actual name. Sadly, though, mangoes season is over until around September. Curse my undying desire for tropical fruit!

Then there was a bra shopping - I'd been wanting a summer-appropriate bra for a while, and we happened upon a yarn-and-thread-and-socks-and-bras-and-pijamas-and-so-on shop, which has a name in Spanish and Italian and I'm damned 'cause I can't remember it at all, and what do you know, bras were purchased! In fact, the same style bra as the shop lady - who'd been having a cigarette break - was wearing, and the same brand as I myself was wearing (and it was pretty awesome that the lady knew which model it was just from my bra strap), which is the same brand that makes my mom squee because it is just that good. (Said brand is Simone Perele, by the by.)

Tomorrow we're going to Anguillara which we've technically already seen, although that was a raining-heavily, try-and-make-out-the-lake day where we arrived, had a cuppa, and left. But tomorrow's going to be splendid, 'cause we're having lunch with my ex-superivser - the really awesome one from my internship volunteer thing. \o/

I've also caught up on the flist. I still have a load of SPN tabs open, but hey, something's something. There's still this week's supply of Tumblr to wade through... Damn it, Internet! Why you so full of stuff?

One of the neighbours is playing Billie Holiday and I can hear it almost perfectly thanks to the acoustics of the back of the apartment. It's lovely: a hot summer afternoon, the wails of a trumpet, and Billie. ♥

I meant to watch X-Men: The Last Stand last weekend but was blocked by Italy. Yes, that's right. The entire country prevented me from watching the movie. Why? Dubbing. The film was in nigh every cinema in the city, and they were all dubbed. It takes less time to put up subtitles than it does to dub, and with the international and tourist audience - plus lanaguage purists - there's definitely a market for it. But nooooo. The one cinema that plays original language films - in all of its two halls - is stil behind the times. Alas, no gay-subtext for me :(

I've also been thinking quite a bit about my Nanowrimos, trying to find the overall theme or arc or something for all the little images in my head. So far, no luck, but more ideas nonetheless. I keep meaning to write them down here but OMG LOOK AT THE TIME. Ahem.

The cold I've been sneezing and sniffling all past week decided that today was the day it was going to make me dizzy, woozy and headachey. I slipped into a nap in the afternoon as I lay horizontal in the hopes that the ground would solidify beneath me, and I'm still feeling out of sorts (and dizzy, let's not forget dizzy).

Jolted out of an unexpected nap and still reeling from The Cold is not the best way in which to answer a phonecall about setting up an appointment with Organization to discuss my CV. I think, though, that a little loss here or there, putting up with yet another learning experience or growth opportunity, is about a gazillion times better than shutting down your empathy and never giving anything to anyone for fear that it might be misused. Leave some chinks in your armor, or you'll suffocate in your safety and never understand why it hurts so much even though there's no one there but you.

So after having skimmed through half of 2005, I'm going to start at the begininng (2002) and head on from there. I will find it even if it kills me. Grr.

I forgot to say yesterday that Palermo was awesome (and y'all will probably never see photos of it because I apparently suck at coming through on promises like that) but the rest of this week has been hellish. I got home Sunday night and there was no hot water and I'd been looking forward to a hot bath like crazy, especially since I'd had cramps all day I am not kidding. We got it fixed Wednesday, until then, cleanliness came in a bucket. The recently-boiled water was always too hot. Cue fist-shaking.

Then the electricity went out all afternoon on Wednesday, and the heating never came back, so it was a delightful 16.5 degrees in my room and there was a lot of huddling under the covers. I am so tired of being cold (and I said as much to Mom, who promptly snapped that she'd hoped I'd be "tired from something else (you lazy ass)").

The good thing, though, is that my internship supervisor's letting me take time out to look for a proper job. This is apparently a less depressive task when done in a proper office where I have to keep it together.

Quotes of the Day: Secret Diary of a Call Girl (3x7) & Castle (3x17)

Castle: He knows we're on a deadline, right?
Beckett: Yeah, he knows.
Castle: I mean a literal deadline. As in, you go over the line you're dead.
Beckett: Castle, can you just give him a chance?
Castle: I- I'm happy to give him anything he needs, it's the clock that's not cooperating.

Sickle's Review of Repo! The Genetic Opera:
  • It is awesome. (Trailer) I remember the crazy mad hype on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets months before the movie came out, and believe be, the hype is totally founded. (Unless cracky science fiction dramatic slasher opera isn't really your thing - like my brother - then you might not like it.) It's rocking fun, the story is good (and easy to follow in that characters are well-introduced and get back-stories) and the songs are brilliant

  • Speaking of, Zydrate Anatomy is still the best song there, although I Didn't Know I'd Love You So Much is rapidly becoming my also-favorite.

  • And speaking of Zydrate Anatomy, can I just say? Graverobber is made of unf.

  • Anthony Stewart Head was spectacular. His singing - and yes, he does have an album out - his acting, everything. Oh man, I've missed seeing him. (This is why I need to watch Merlin, I know.) I didn't even have to choose between hopeing for him being Giles-like or him being Ripper-like. (And, um, Sexy Evil Voice is Sexy.)

  • And again, speaking of Anthony Head, I didn't know his brother was Murray Head, of One Night in Bangkok. That is... Wow. That's a classic, that is.

Sickle Wields the Science Stick: On icanhascheezburger, someone posts a video: Fennec Fox Demands Love. Cue the "OMGWTF that's a wild animal, why is it captivity!" voices and the "it's totally domesticated, no worries mate, have some fallacies" maddness, and I back away slowly to shake my head (and Science Stick!) far from the drama. My references are all going to be Wiki because I have neither the time nor patience to pull up relevant journals and I am not doing a literature review to shake the Science Stick over the concepts of domestication, tameness, and similar. Today at the internship I returned to the translations, which is sort of a relief on account of the lack of interminable scanning, and on the other hand, it's me, back where I started. I need this oompf to get me a little bit further now.

There was another metro&bus strike this morning, which meant I got to go to the office's neighbourhood a full hour before work actually started and, plus, I got to freeze my bum off sitting and walking around the sad, empty little streets.

Mom's off to Spain starting this morning, so it's just my Dad and me until Wednesday. I trust we won't starve, although to hear my mother speak and see her stock the freezer, you'd think we didn't know how to feed ourselves. Mind you, I think I'm having McD's tomorrow.

Tomorrow, speaking of, I'm going to head over to the far reaches of the city and try and get my fiscal number. It will undoubtably involve a lot of waiting and hopefully not too much paperwork. Beurocracy for the not at all win.

I've spent the afternoon revelling in having the house to myself and working on almost a week's worth of Links of the Day (oh, compulsive organization!) On Sunday Dad and I are going to see a Swan lake ballet showing - we managed to nab free tickets from our landlady for some reason. I think I might force myself to go jogging sometimes in the weekend too, and I have to write a comment in a Goethe forum for my German homework (how wack is that?).

In other news, I'm dying to finish The Pillars of the Earth and hey, new Supernatural this week again! \o/ I'm really looking forward to seeing more of Puppy!Sam. Ah, it's almost like seeing Season 1 Sam all over again! (Except he doesn't have the adorable bangs of adorableness.)

Today is - or rather was, by the time I get this posted - my brother's birthday. Even though he's way over in far off lands currently struggling with the snowpocalypse, we celebrated the traditional way - food (chocolate mousse whatwhat!) and booze. Well, we called him, too. He's 33 now, which makes me feel so, so old. In less than 3 years, I'm going to be 30. I can't even begin to imagine what I want my life to be like by then. I can't even get myself out of this rut, it seems. They say all states are temporary, but damn it if they don't feel permanent when you're living them. But damn it, I CAN HAS HOPE. AND OOMPF. * Hyman G. Rickover, quoted in The New York Times, 3 November 1986
bending_sickle: (Invisible?)
Sickle Shows Signs of Life, Fails Miserably:

  • I'm on Chapter 7 of 13 in the editing of Nanowrimo 2010. It's actually better than my sleep-deprived memories insisted it was, and there's some elements that keep popping up that give it the illusion of a theme. I'm going to give TfSB an edit as well sometime soon, because a) it's embarrassingly full of typos and b) I want my volunteer internship supervisor to read it first before handing over TWSaM. (I've talked about the book with her a lot, and she's been really supportive and interested in it, and would like to read it, so yays!)

  • Watched L'Herrisson yesterday, a French film about a very intelligent little girl bent on committing suicide on her twelfth birthday, the consierge, a quite woman with hidden depths, and the new Japanese neighbour who courts her. It was wonderful and beautiful, even if the ending made me wail against the world.

  • On Tuesday, the students of Rome - and the whole country - went out in a manifestation which blocked the whole of downtown and the metro. This resulted in my first staring at the closed metro station displaying schopero, then taking bus one so I could connect to bus two, except bus one never went to where it was supposed to connect because the whole center was blocked so I ended up taking a really long tour around downtown, across the river, through a couple tunnels, until I finally managed to get off somewhere near the Vatican and Castel Sant Angelo. I walked to where I was supposed to find bus two, but that was closed to traffic, pretty much, so I ended up walking all the way home in the rain. I got home 3:15 hours after I was supposed to, and most of that was walking. I was displeased.

  • I've been scanning documents like mad these past few days, which while boring and on-my-feet work, it has allowed me to catch up on audiobooks and podcasts. I should probably write this is my profile, but I have mad love for Winchester Radio and Monster Talk (science!) and am currently listening to The Vesuvius Club as recommended by [livejournal.com profile] qthewetsprocket

  • About a month ago I had a meet-and-greet with someone from Organization, where I basically handed over my CV and met the interns, whom I had lunch with at the cafeteria. I also got chatted up by the security guard during the half hour I was waiting to be let into the Organization (crazy security measures of crazy) and he gave me his number, but I've let that slide. I've been meaning to write about that for ages, so here it is.

  • I'm going to Chicago on Sunday - my brother's not coming for Christmas, so I'm the official family representative. I'll be back the 17th and [livejournal.com profile] katarinagram's coming the 21st for the holidays, so there is much squee.
